Newsom announces B plan to reopen schools by spring\">school districts<\/a> greater flexibility when hiring nurses is one step away from becoming law.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Bill 1722, introduced by Assemblywoman Megan Dahle (R-Bieber) in February, would allow school districts to hire licensed\u200d vocational nurses when credentialed school \u2063nurses\u200c are unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c bill was unanimously passed \u200cby the Assembly in\u200d May, and again unanimously\u200b by the Senate in early September and sent Sept. 22 to \u200bGov. Credentialed school nurses are typically registered nurses\u200c who have\u2062 also earned school\u200d nurse credentials from the \u200dCalifornia Commission on Teacher Credentialing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">In an\u2062 Assembly \u200dEducation\u2062 Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billAnalysisClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a>, Ms.\u200b Dahle\u2063 said that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated California\u2019s school nurse shortage, mirroring a statewide\u200d nursing shortage.<\/div>\n<p>Additionally, \u2063rural schools\u200d are more likely to lack \u2064school nurse support than those located in cities, \u200ctowns, or suburbs,\u2062 according\u2062 to the \u2064assemblywoman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne\u2064 school district I represent has gone without a school nurse\u200c for 3 \u200byears and others share a health clerk who is contracted for 2 hours \u200ca week,\u201d she said. \u201cAs a result, the reality for our students \u2062means going without \u200da school nurse, <strong>school staff without medical training are the ones applying bandages, dispensing medication,\u2062 managing allergies, asthma, monitoring blood \u2062glucose levels, and handling medical emergencies.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Small School Districts Association echoed\u2063 Ms. Dahle\u2019s concerns in a\u200b September statement, calling the\u2062 school nurse shortage a \u201cpressing need\u201d for\u200d rural districts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is\u2063 a pressing need\u200c to augment our\u2062 capabilities given the current \u200dchallenges posed \u2064by a growing nurse shortage,\u201d \u200bthe association said.\u2063 \u201cBy utilizing \u2064 <strong>licensed vocational nurses<\/strong> under the appropriate supervision, we can broaden our resources without \u2063compromising the\u200b quality of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/john-macarthur-commends-underground-church-in-canada-reads-heartfelt-letter-from-jailed-alberta-pastor\/\" title=\"John MacArthur Commends \u2018Underground Church In Canada,\u2019 Reads Heartfelt Letter From Jailed Alberta Pastor\">care provided<\/a> to our students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The bill has garnered support from other education groups\u2014including the Association of California\u2062 School Administrators and the \u200cCalifornia School Boards Association\u2014as\u200c well as parents and community members.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">However, it is opposed by the California Teachers Association, a union representing 310,000 teachers, according to a June Senate Education\u2062 Committee \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billAnalysisClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>The association said,\u2062 in a statement included in\u2064 the analysis, it opposes the\u200c bill because it is concerned that it could be used \u200dto \u201ccircumvent\u201d\u200b some recent\u2062 labor agreements for credentialed school nurses\u2019 salary increases by hiring licensed vocational nurses instead.<\/p>\n<p>The union \u2063instead argued they believed \u2064restricting\u200c the bill\u2019s provisions \u201cspecifically to rural\u2063 counties of\u2064 a \u2062certain size provides a more immediate\u200c solution for rural \u2063counties and \u200bprevents larger <strong>local educational agencies<\/strong> from utilizing the provisions of <strong>the\u200b bill<\/strong> to hire\u200d lower salaried\u200d employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How do supporters of Assembly Bill 1722 believe that\u2064 including licensed vocational nurses can help address the shortage of school nurses in California<\/h2>\n<p><span>  . \u201cThere\u200d have been \u200dinstances of students being diagnosed with diabetes or asthma without the presence \u2062of a nurse,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c bill seeks to address these issues by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ron-desantis-signs-bill-to-ensure-curriculum-transparency-for-parents-were-doing-education-not-indoctrination\/\" title=\"Ron DeSantis Signs Bill to Ensure Curriculum Transparency for Parents: 'We\u2019re Doing Education, Not Indoctrination'\">allowing school districts<\/a> to hire licensed vocational nurses when credentialed school nurses are \u200cunavailable.
