Stanford University applied for grants through the Departments of the Army, Navy, \u200band Air Force,\u200d the \u2062National Aeronautics and Space Administration\u2063 (NASA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Each of \u2063the five \u200cgovernment agencies requires grant\u2064 applicants to disclose their current and \u200dpending funding sources.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The Department of \u2064Justice (DOJ) detailed the erroneous grant\u200d filings in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/stanford-university-agrees-pay-19-million-resolve-allegations-it-failed-disclose-foreign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press\u200c release<\/a> \u200b on Monday. The DOJ brought the False Claims Act allegations against Stanford University, following a joint investigation involving the DOJ&#8217;s Civil Division, Commercial Litigation Branch, and Fraud Section. Boynton, who \u2063heads the DOJ&#8217;s Civil Division, said on Monday. \u201cThe department\u200c will continue to ensure that \u2063grant applicants submit complete and truthful\u2063 disclosures, so the government has full transparency into the applicant\u2019s funding \u200bsources.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Stanford Professor Linked to Chinese \u2064University<\/h2>\n<p>According\u2063 to the DOJ statement,\u200c Stanford University &#8220;knowingly \u200dfailed to disclose&#8221; to the \u200dArmy, Air Force, and NSF that \u200bone of its professors received research funding in connection with his employment at Fudan University in Shanghai, \u2062China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The DOJ\u200d statement did not name this particular \u200bStanford professor or provide any additional details about his employment for the Chinese university. Fudan University is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stanford-agrees-to-pay-1-9-million-to-settle-claims-it-failed-to-disclose-foreign-ties\/\" title=\"Stanford to pay .9M to settle undisclosed foreign ties claims.\">national public research \u200buniversity\u2063 sponsored<\/a> by \u2062the Chinese \u200cMinistry\u2063 of Education.<\/p>\n<p>NTD News reached out to the DOJ for\u2062 more details about the Fudan University-connected Stanford professor, but did not receive a response by the time this article was \u2063published.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Cannizzo, the assistant director of the NCIS National Security \u200bDirectorate, said \u200bthe failure of U.S.\u200d universities to disclose their financial ties to foreign entities during their \u2063grant applications &#8220;has the potential\u200c to threaten government interests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Michael \u2062Curran, the acting special agent in charge of\u200c the CID&#8217;s Major Procurement Fraud Field \u200bOffice, also stressed the importance of grant applicants fully disclosing their ties with foreign entities \u2064when entering grant partnerships with the Army.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The DOJ has shown increased concern in\u2062 recent years about researchers spying for and exporting U.S. research to\u200b China.\u2064 The DOJ has prosecuted several\u200b Chinese nationals who\u200d have come \u2062to work at\u200c U.S. universities, including \u200dStanford.
