Little consideration has been \u2062paid, however, to what risks Democrats might take\u200d in\u2064 backing an unprincipled\u200c and unserious Republican in\u200c pursuing\u2062 a\u2062 personal vendetta\u2062 against McCarthy.<\/p>\n<p>What will follow a vote to oust McCarthy? Nobody has any idea. Who will be the next speaker? Unknown and unknowable. Will that speaker allow an up or\u200b down\u2063 vote on \u2063aid to\u2064 Ukraine? \u200cUnknown and unknowable. Will that speaker oversee \u2064a long and painful shutdown of the\u200d government in pursuit of unobtainable concessions? We will all find out together.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and the media, if we can be redundant, seem singularly focused \u200bon \u2062the immediate \u2062pleasure to be had in the spectacle of Republican \u200dchaos \u2063and\u2062 McCarthy&#8217;s humiliation. \u2062But there will be only\u200c a handful of\u2064 Republicans who vote \u2062to bring down the speaker and open Pandora&#8217;s box.<\/p>\n<p>This is a pattern we\u2019ve seen from Democrats over the past decade, starting with Claire McCaskill\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2015\/08\/todd-akin-missouri-claire-mccaskill-2012-121262\/\">successful campaign to boost Todd Akin<\/a> in Missouri&#8217;s 2012 GOP\u2063 Senate\u200c primary. A few \u200cyears later, Democrats cheered on Donald Trump as he crushed his GOP opponents, confident that he was the weakest general election candidate they could face. Since then, \u200cthey have elevated a procession of unserious Republican \u2064candidates with\u200d millions of dollars in advertising, from Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania to \u2063Darren Bailey in Illinois and John Gibbs in \u2064Michigan.
