Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) unveiled the <a href=\"https:\/\/hankjohnson.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/rep-johnson-reintroduces-bipartisan-bill-de-militarize-police-1\">Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, I re-introduced the bipartisan Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act (SMLEA) to rein in DOD transfers of excess military weapons to local law enforcement. Too often our communities are policed w\/ a warrior mentality not protect &amp; serve. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HI0drXGktc\">https:\/\/t.co\/HI0drXGktc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HJS4QLNFG4\">pic.twitter.com\/HJS4QLNFG4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Hank Johnson (@RepHankJohnson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepHankJohnson\/status\/1369344063569358859?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If passed, the bill would restrict the 1033 Program, which allows the Pentagon to pass down excess military grade equipment to police departments.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Georgia Democrat claimed \u201cAmerica\u2019s founding fathers opposed blurring the line between police and the military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, law enforcement officials said the program helps them to do their job more efficiently and at low cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allows us to get some of the things that we need without having to pay for it out of our budget,\u201d Sheriff Jack Smith of the Northampton County Sheriff\u2019s Department said.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was also introduced last summer at the height of anti-police riots and calls for defunding the police.<\/p>\n<h4>MORE NEWS: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/ky-lawmakers-advance-bill-which-would-make-it-a-crime-to-insult-taunt-law-enforcement-officer-in-a-provoking-manner\/\">Ky.
