Buckley wrote that his new magazine <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stop-giving-your-money-to-corporations-that-hate-you-and-start-building-a-better-future\/\" title=\"Stop Giving Your Money To Corporations That Hate You \u2013 And Start Building a Better Future\">stands athwart history<\/a>, yelling Stop, at a time when no \u200bone is \u200cinclined to do so, \u2064or to have much patience with those who so urge it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Rishi Sunak, Britain&#8217;s Tory\u2062 prime \u2063minister, seems to have bravely adopted at least some of that mission by challenging Britain&#8217;s radical climate agenda. It is a lesson for the United\u200d States.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Addressing\u2062 Britain&#8217;s sanguine climate policy, Sunak\u200d said, <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;there\u2019s nothing ambitious about simply asserting a goal\u2062 for a short-term\u2062 headline without being honest with the public about the tough choices and sacrifices involved \u200cand without any meaningful democratic debate about\u2063 how we get there.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> Mind\u200d you, Mr. Sunak is not what\u2062 the climate cult types call \u200ca \u200c&#8221;climate change denier&#8221;; far from it. But he\u200c understands that aspirations without \u2064means are merely\u2062 pipe dreams. Sterling Burnett<\/h3>\n<p><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-comp-caption text-[14px] leading-[18px]\">9\/14\/2023<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shrink-0 basis-[120px]\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/epochtv\/scientists-bullied-into-falling-in-line-with-climate-change-narrative-h-sterling-burnett-5491502?ea_src=author_manual&#038;ea_med=related_stories\"><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$-->\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated that automobiles in \u2064the Model Year 2026 CAFE (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republican-ags-challenge-biden-fuel-economy-standards\/\" title=\"Republican AGs Challenge Biden Fuel Economy Standards\">corporate average fuel economy<\/a>) standards at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/regulations-emissions-vehicles-and-engines\/final-rule-revise-existing-national-ghg-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">55 miles per gallon<\/a> for sedans and <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/data\/10562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">39\u2062 mpg for trucks<\/a> and light-duty trucks\/SUVs. Those are enormous increases of 25 percent \u200cand 28 percent,\u2064 respectively, just\u2064 since 2020.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:1700px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>(Source: Environmental\u2064 Protection Agency \u2063\/CAFE Standards by \u2064Year 1978-2025)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The\u200c clear \u200bintention in raising the CAFE standards so quickly is to force consumers into buying\u200d new\u2064 cars that are either fully or partially electric, hybrids, or fully \u200celectric.\u200c But \u200bthere is clear resistance,\u200b as reflected in this comment even from Kyle \u200dBass,\u200d an avid environmentalist and chief investment officer of Conservation Equity \u2062Management, a private equity fund focused on &#8220;facilitating\u200c conservation investment.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>State and local governments in so-called &#8220;blue&#8221; states have been even more aggressive in forcing radical lifestyle changes on the people in their jurisdiction. In \u200dNew York, for example, it is something of a race to &#8220;make history,&#8221; with elected officials lauding the city&#8217;s status as &#8220;the first city in America to[[<em>insert costly,\u200d new, crackpot, &#8220;green&#8221; energy notion here<\/em>]. \u2064See this \u200bexample lauding an expensive &#8220;congestion pricing&#8221; tax scheme the\u2064 city will impose next year, whereby drivers who go below 60th Street in Manhattan will have \u2064to pay a congestion pricing toll of\u200d $26 to\u200d &#8220;reduce fuel consumed \u2063and\u200d pollutant emissions.&#8221;\n<\/div>\n<p><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/p>\n<p>Another &#8220;green&#8221; initiative bans new construction in New York \u200bCity from having natural gas hookups, even though \u200dnatural gas reserves are estimated \u2062at 300 years and \u200dnatural gas burns far cleaner than many alternatives. New York&#8217;s legendary pizzerias, some serving pizza from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fuggedaboutit-new-york-city-considers-pizza-oven-ban\/\" title=\"NYC considers banning pizza ovens. Fuggedaboutit!\">coal-fired ovens<\/a> for more than a century, will\u2063 likely\u2062 be forced to adopt electric pizza ovens. Another initiative will force New Yorkers to hold onto their garbage for\u2064 up to \u200da\u200b week for mandatory \u200dcomposting of organic waste, since the city&#8217;s plan\u200b only \u200dallows for compost pick-ups just once a \u2063week. Imagine the smell. \u2063And the vermin!\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>At least two council members \u200dare starting to pay attention to the mismatch \u200cbetween means and ends, and the enormous costs of \u2062compliance to \u2062their constituents, but they\u200c are well in\u200c the minority in the council.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Got Democracy?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prime Minister Sunak stated,\u200b simply, that &#8220;it cannot be right &#8230; to \u200dimpose\u2062 such significant costs on working people, especially\u200d those\u200d who are\u2064 already struggling to\u200c make ends meet, and to interfere so much in people\u2019s way of life\u2063 without \u2064a \u2063properly informed national debate.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We should\u200d all cheer, &#8220;Hear! Hear!&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>These new CAFE standards and other climate-related mandates weren&#8217;t decisions arrived at by referendum or consensus; they\u200d were decreed by bureaucrats. In New York, the City Council imposing mandate after mandate is dominated overwhelmingly by Democrats, and most of those are \u2064&#8221;woke&#8221; progressives whose\u200c principal life\u200c experience is working in politics or at not-for-profits funded by the city. Their inexperience and inability to\u2063 see anything beyond their altruistic objective personify the kind of thinking that overstates aspirations without regard \u200cto means\u2014exactly as \u2063Prime Minister Sunak described in his talk.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Means to Ends<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>So \u2063let&#8217;s look\u2063 at means.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Few would argue that it is better to reduce hydrocarbon emissions, if we can,\u2062 for the general health of the people, if not to achieve\u200c climate goals. But\u2062 we also need to maintain an economy to\u200b feed, clothe, and house hundreds of \u2062millions of people and ensure our national security.\n<\/p>\n<p>We cannot do those things\u200c if we\u200b overburden the nation&#8217;s electric grid. We cannot do those things relying on \u2062&#8221;renewables&#8221; like wind and solar\u2064 power\u2014not even with the best of those technologies we have available \u2062today. And we cannot \u2064do \u2063that with Americans abandoning \u2062their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/time-to-tell-americas-climate-cult-stop\/\" title=\"Stop the climate cult in America.\">gasoline-powered internal combustion engines<\/a> in favor\u200c of electric\u2062 vehicles (EVs) that most of them cannot \u2062afford and that require a charge from an overburdened electrical grid. We might be able to generate all the \u200crequired electricity the climate cult demands with \u200cnuclear energy and a massive investment in the electrical grid,\u2063 but progressives \u2063abhor the former and have made no provisions at all to pay\u200d for the latter.\n<\/p>\n<p>At \u2063an average cost of $64,000, the cost \u200dof\u2063 EVs the climate cult\u2064 would\u200b have us all adopt is now, and will likely continue\u200b to be, well beyond the financial means of most Americans. They&#8217;re also extraordinarily heavy, going from\u200d hundreds to thousands of pounds more than gasoline-powered \u2064cars. That makes EV crashes far less survivable than their gas-powered counterparts and \u2062raises concerns about the structural \u200cintegrity of\u2062 roads, bridges, \u2063and vertical parking garages.\n<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s to say nothing of how vulnerable an &#8220;all EV&#8221; economy would make us. First, the inputs necessary to make EVs are\u2063 at risk as they come largely from a geopolitical adversary, \u2062China. Other EV inputs depend on mining\u200c in countries in the Third World where China is aggressively developing a \u2062geostrategic advantage, but where we have no other\u200d interest\u2063 except for EV inputs. The United States simply cannot rely on that supply chain. Nor can we afford to further exacerbate our balance\u2063 of payments deficit with China by buying their batteries or to go tit-for-tat with China for aid and investments in \u2062countries \u200cwhere\u2062 we have no other geopolitical interests. Challenging China for these EV supplies could present\u200b grievous fiscal, geopolitical, and geostrategic challenges, even war. And for what? EVs?\n<\/p>\n<p>Prime \u200dMinister Sunak, who\u200b accepts\u2063 the hypothesis that human activity is responsible for \u200cclimate change, may not\u2064 be yelling &#8220;Stop!&#8221; in the manner Mr. Buckley described; \u2063he may simply \u2063be saying &#8220;slow down.&#8221; And reasonably \u2062so. For now, though, it\u2063 is enough.\n<\/p>\n<p>We need to ensure that the technology we have to fulfill the \u200cclimate cult&#8217;s ambitious agenda \u2062is viable, affordable, and secure from a geostrategic perspective. Major elements of the &#8220;green&#8221;\u2062 supply chain cannot be\u200b in\u2063 the hands of those who would use it to force their political ends upon us. We \u200dlearned \u200cthat lesson with the OPEC oil shock in the 1970s.\n<\/p>\n<p>But we are \u200djust starting to do that. NASA has developed \u200da prototype \u200dfor a light battery for use in aircraft. Small modular reactors\u2014technological cousins of the type we use in \u2064our nuclear navy that have been used safely \u200dfor nearly 70 years\u2014are less costly, more efficient, and more easily deployed\u2014as well as\u200b arguably safer\u2014than their large counterparts.\n<\/p>\n<p>But bringing those and other technologies to bear to power cities, factories, and, yes, EVs, will require another 30\u201350 years. In the meantime, we will have \u200dwasted trillions on technology \u200bthat is\u200d effectively \u2063obsolescent the moment it \u200dcomes online.\n<\/p>\n<p>Listen to William F. Buckley:\u200d &#8220;Stop!&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> Are \u2064consumers in the United Kingdom and\u200b the United States ready for\u2062 such a\u2062 rapid transition in \u200cclimate policies, considering the practicality \u2064and impact\u200d on their \u200cdaily lives?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  He question is, are consumers ready for such a rapid transition? And more importantly, has there been enough public discourse and\u200c debate about this shift?<\/p>\n<p>In the United Kingdom, Sunak has rightfully pointed out the \u2062lack of transparency and democratic\u2064 debate in their climate policy. Aspirations and goals are important, but\u2064 they need to be backed\u200c by realistic \u2062means and an\u200c understanding\u200d of the sacrifices involved. Simply asserting \u200dambitious \u2064goals without considering\u2064 the practicality and\u200c impact on the\u200b public is\u200c not a responsible\u2062 approach.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062same can be said for the United States. The EPA&#8217;s mandate to increase \u200bfuel economy \u2064standards by such significant\u200d margins in just a few years is a drastic\u2064 move. While the intention may be to push consumers towards electric or hybrid \u2063vehicles, there needs to \u200bbe a\u200b consideration for the readiness and affordability of such vehicles for the general public. Without\u200d meaningful democratic debate and\u2063 public discourse on these matters, we risk alienating\u2064 and burdening the very people these\u2062 policies are supposed to benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change\u2063 is an important \u2064issue that requires action, but it should not come at the \u200bexpense of democratic principles and the well-being of the public. Policymakers and governments \u200cneed to engage in open and transparent discussions with the public about the costs, \u200cbenefits, and feasibility of their climate policies.<\/p>\n<p>We \u2064should not rush into \u200bdecisions\u200b that\u2062 have far-reaching \u2062consequences\u2064 without thoroughly considering all\u200c perspectives and exploring alternative options. Just as Buckley&#8217;s National \u2064Review stood\u2064 athwart history, yelling Stop, we need voices like Sunak&#8217;s in challenging radical climate \u200dagendas\u200d and advocating for a\u2063 more measured and inclusive approach.<\/p>\n<p>It is \u200btime \u2064for both the United Kingdom and the United \u200dStates to prioritize democratic\u200b debate and public discourse \u200din shaping their climate policies. Only \u2064through open dialogue and a consideration of all stakeholders&#8217; opinions and concerns can we create policies that are \u2064fair,\u200d effective, and \u2062sustainable in the long\u200b run.
