Mary Miller (R-Ill.) had accused his agency of ignoring the order and \u200cpressuring firms &#8220;to fire American workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s categorically untrue. We didn&#8217;t \u2063threaten anyone, and we didn&#8217;t demand that anyone be fired.\u2064 &#8230; \u2062Congresswoman, I believe that the American people expect their government \u200bto take on the big problems that are facing them,&#8221; Mr. Parker responded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More than a million people died from COVID [in the United States].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Parker, \u200cyou&#8217;re one of a number of officials in this\u200d administration who\u200b has come before this\u200b committee and tell us now that two plus two doesn&#8217;t \u200bequal four. &#8230; has there\u2063 been some \u200dsort of memo going around? Why is the administration\u2062 insistent \u200con \u2063rewriting history?&#8221; Rep. The \u2062rule, he claimed, was an alternative \u2064for employees who didn&#8217;t\u200c want the vaccine and could instead get COVID-19\u2064 testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll you have to do is read that rule, and \u200cyou will see that\u200b it is \u200bnot a vaccine mandate. It gives\u200c employees the option of testing in lieu of a vaccine mandate,\u201d Mr. Parker said.<\/p>\n<p>OSHA didn&#8217;t \u2064respond to a request for \u2064additional comment by press time.<\/p>\n<p>The mandate drew significant backlash from conservatives, who said that it would create chaos across the United States. \u200bA number of Republican attorneys general at the time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/osha-covid-vaccine-mandate-biden-11636066416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that the rule was overreach because OSHA is tasked &#8220;with work-related hazards, not\u2062 all hazards \u200cone might encounter anywhere in the \u200dworld.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In its ruling, the Supreme Court wrote: \u201cThe challenges posed \u2063by a\u2064 global pandemic do not allow a federal agency to exercise power \u200bthat Congress\u200d has not conferred upon it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the\u200b same\u200c time, \u200csuch \u2063unprecedented circumstances provide no grounds \u2063for limiting the exercise\u200d of authorities the agency\u2062 has \u200blong been \u2063recognized to have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Months \u200dlater, the Biden administration withdrew\u2062 the rule\u2062 after losing the Supreme Court case. In May, the Biden \u2063administration allowed the three-year-long public \u2063health emergency for COVID-19 to expire. A federal mask mandate for public transportation means and hubs was struck down in 2022\u00a0by a federal judge in Florida.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What scientific evidence\u200b and recommendations did\u2064 OSHA rely on when deciding \u2062to implement\u200c the vaccine\u200c mandate?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Ed powers,&#8221; referring to OSHA&#8217;s oversight of workplace safety\u200b and health regulations.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Mr. Parker defended OSHA&#8217;s actions, stating that the agency was tasked with protecting\u200d workers&#8217; safety and health in the\u200c face\u200c of a deadly pandemic. He emphasized that the \u200cvaccine mandate was designed to \u2063mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and save lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a pandemic that is killing our fellow Americans,&#8221; Mr. Parker said. &#8220;Our goal is\u200c to save\u2064 lives. We&#8217;ve seen\u2064 the impact of this virus and the devastation it has caused. The \u2064decision to\u200b implement \u200cthe mandate was made based on the best available information at the time, with the\u200c aim\u200d of protecting workers and curbing the spread of the virus in workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding\u200c the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to block the mandate, Mr. Parker acknowledged the ruling but clarified that it \u2062did \u200bnot reflect \u2063a \u2063judgement on the\u200c merits of the rule. He stated that OSHA would abide by the \u2064court&#8217;s decision, just as it\u200d had followed the legal process in developing the vaccine mandate in\u200d the first place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we are disappointed by the court&#8217;s decision, we will respect \u2064it and \u200ccontinue to work towards protecting workers within the framework of the law,&#8221;\u2064 Mr. Parker said.<\/p>\n<p>He \u2064assured the committee that \u200bOSHA did not engage in\u200c any \u2064coercion \u200dor pressure tactics with\u2062 private companies after the mandate was blocked.
