Her very\u200b original argument is that democracy\u200d is \u2062at stake.<\/p>\n<p>The wheels have \u200bapparently not fallen off \u200bthat wagon yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he problem is Republicans\u2019 \u2063insistence \u200bon denying the key component of\u200b a democracy: the power of\u200d the people to elect the leaders of their choice to \u2063govern,\u201d Rubin wrote. \u201cRepublicans have grown\u2063 attached to tactics that perpetuate minority rule,\u200c including thwarting voting (e.g., filibustering voting rights \u2063legislation) and \u200bdenying election\u200c results (e.g., signing onto a brief to disenfranchise millions of Americans, \u2063baselessly challenging Biden\u2019s electors) \u2026 Simply put: We need\u200c to shore up democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, by \u201cshore up democracy,\u201d Rubin means for Democrats\u200d to once\u200c again escalate\u2063 political\u2062 tensions by abandoning their allegedly precious\u2064 norms and precedents.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2062 did it under Obama when the Democrat Senate majority\u2063 terminated \u2063the\u2062 filibuster for cabinet \u2063appointments. They did it under the \u2063same presidency \u200bby defending his\u200c IRS commissioner\u2019s demonstrable harassment of right-leaning non-profits.\u2062 They did it under \u200bTrump \u2062by claiming \u2014 without evidence! \u2014\u200b that\u200d he stole the presidency with an assist from Russia and then that he was\u2064 actually a Russian \u200bagent guilty of treason. They also chased down Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-reps-jordan-issa-demand-transparency-from-irs-over-partisan-leak-of-tax-records\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Reps. Jordan, Issa Demand Transparency From IRS Over \u2018Partisan\u2019 Leak Of Tax Records\">private tax records<\/a>. Then, they impeached him twice for no discernible crime. They did it\u2064 during \u2062the 2020 election by encouraging and \u200bexcusing \u2063months of nationwide riots, political\u2062 violence, and the destruction of \u2062property. When Republicans had their own much smaller \u2063version limited to\u2064 a single day, Democrats\u200d called for the protesters \u2062to \u2062be thrown in \u2064prison.<\/p>\n<p>The one\u200d time Republicans even bothered to play the same game was at the start of the Trump\u2063 presidency when they removed the filibuster for\u2063 Supreme Court nominees. And that was only a tit-for-tat. If they had really wanted \u200cto\u2063 one-up the opposition, they would \u2063have \u200dpacked the court with another nine justices, as Democrats have been threatening to do \u2063since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>For all\u200d of their B.S.-ing \u200babout \u201cthe norms,\u201d \u201cthe soul of\u200b democracy,\u201d and \u201cfaith in our \u200cinstitutions,\u201d it\u2019s Democrats time and\u2062 time \u2064again taking a dump\u200b on all\u200d of it.<\/p>\n<p>They weren\u2019t so horny to \u201cshore \u200cup democracy\u201d \u200cafter Trump was elected. Since 2016, they\u2019ve asserted that elections aren\u2019t\u200d fair unless\u2063 they win, stripped state legislatures\u200d of their constitutional domain over election regulation,\u200d and attempted to\u2063 bury their leading opponent for president under a crush of criminal indictments that threaten to put him in\u2064 prison \u2014 for\u200d doing the very thing Democrats have done for years.<\/p>\n<p>The only recourse out-of-power Republicans have in checking extreme measures the left \u2062has taken\u2063 on abortion, transgenderism, and race discrimination \u2062is to consult the rule book and perhaps find a \u2063way\u200b to stall. That\u2019s the same option Democrats have \u200bhad and \u200dhave used when they\u2019ve been in \u2063the same\u2062 position. It\u2019s the same option Democrats would\u200b have when \u2063they\u2019re inevitably in the same position again.<\/p>\n<p>Rubin: Nope! Time to\u2064 throw that one out, too, FOLKS!<\/p>\n<p>Of course, their goal is to make it so that they\u2019re never in\u2062 the \u2064same \u200cposition again.\u2063 Then the things they\u2019ve done won\u2019t get to be done in return. \u200cFor\u2064 that, they have to \u201cshore up democracy\u201d by erasing even more of\u200b it.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How do Democrats argue that changes to\u2062 institutional rules would prevent Republicans from perpetuating minority rule, and \u2062what evidence do they present to support this claim?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  All of this in the name\u200d of\u200d &#8220;shoring \u200bup democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, with the slim majority in the Senate,\u2064 Democrats are\u200b once again trying to \u200bundermine democracy by proposing changes to institutional rules that would consolidate their power and silence their political \u200bopponents. Rubin argues that \u2063these \u2062changes \u2062are\u200d necessary to prevent\u200d Republicans from perpetuating minority rule and denying the will of the people.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s examine this\u200b argument more \u200dclosely.\u200c Democrats claim that Republicans have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/jennifer-rubin-urges-democrats-to-shore-up-democracy-by-erasing-even-more-of-it\/\" title=\"Jennifer Rubin calls on Democrats to strengthen democracy by further eliminating its flaws.\">thwarting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-signs-executive-order-to-make-it-easier-to-vote-calls-gop-election-reform-efforts-an-all-out-assault-on-voting-rights\/\" title=\"Biden Signs Executive Order \u2018To Make It Easier\u2019 To Vote, Calls GOP Election Reform Efforts \u2018An All-Out Assault\u2019 On Voting Rights\">voting rights legislation<\/a><\/a> and denying election results. They \u200cpoint to the filibustering \u200bof voting rights legislation and \u2062the baseless challenges to Biden&#8217;s electors as evidence of this. \u200bHowever, it is important\u2064 to note that these actions were taken\u200d within the framework \u2063of the democratic process.\u2063 Filibustering is\u2062 a legitimate tool that has been used by both parties throughout history, and challenging election results, while\u2062 controversial, \u200bis \u2062part of the \u200dlegal\u2064 process to ensure \u200cthe integrity of elections.<\/p>\n<p>What Democrats are essentially suggesting is that Republicans\u2064 should not be allowed to exercise their rights and use legitimate tools to voice\u2064 their concerns and opinions. By changing the rules to silence their political \u2064opponents, Democrats are actually undermining \u200bdemocracy rather than shoring it \u200cup.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, \u200dthe examples of Democrats abandoning \u2064norms \u2064and precedents in the \u200bpast\u200d should give us pause. \u200cIf Democrats were willing to abandon these norms under previous administrations, what is to stop them from doing it again in the future? Once the floodgates\u2063 are opened, it becomes a dangerous precedent that can be \u2064exploited by any party \u200cin power.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of trying \u200dto consolidate their power and\u200d silence their opponents, Democrats should focus on engaging\u2064 in good-faith debates and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-un-pick-urges-continued-u-s-presence-in-chinese-led-panels\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s UN pick urges continued U.S. presence in Chinese-led panels\">finding common ground<\/a>. \u200cDemocracy thrives on diversity of opinions and the ability to freely express them. By silencing their opponents,\u200d Democrats are stifling this diversity and creating a one-party system.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, Jennifer Rubin&#8217;s\u2062 argument that Democrats need to change institutional rules \u2062to &#8220;shore\u200d up democracy&#8221; is deeply flawed. \u2062It is a thinly\u2064 veiled attempt to consolidate power and silence political opponents. Instead of undermining democracy,\u200d Democrats should engage in meaningful \u2062debates and \u200crespect\u2062 the democratic process.
