Ted Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz was also the \u2062last \u200cserious challenger \u2063to Trump\u200d for the nomination. (As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2016-election\/ted-cruz-ends-2016-presidential-campaign-n567366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> reported at the time, former Ohio Gov. John Kasich stayed in the campaign a day later\u2064 than \u200bCruz \u2014\u2062 on May 4, 2016 \u2014 \u200cbut by then Kasich was largely a non-factor except for some \u2063admiring liberals and\u200d conservatives who\u2062 thought of him \u200djust long enough to despise him.)<\/p>\n<p>Clearly looking \u2063to avoid giving any of this year\u2019s rivals a chance \u200bto get early momentum \u200bthat could turn \u200binto a lingering in a race\u200d where he\u2019s\u200c going to\u2063 be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/judge-sets-trumps-trial-date-1-day-biggest-primary-event-2024-defense-team-immediately-realizes-happening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fighting\u2062 criminal\u2064 charges<\/a> while running for president\u2064 at\u200d the same time, Trump\u2062 is\u200b looking to lock \u2062up Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>So far, he appears to\u200b be getting it done.<\/p>\n<p>According\u200d to the polling site \u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/president-primary-r\/2024\/iowa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FiveThirtyEight<\/a>, Trump led polls in September \u200bwith spreads ranging from a low of \u200d24 points (Sept. 19-21\/Public Opinion Strategies) to \u2063a high of 35 points (Sept. 7-9\/Emerson College).<\/p>\n<p>The six polls listed give Trump an average lead of 29.6 percent, three-and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/johnson-johnson-vaccine-shelf-life-extended-as-millions-of-doses-near-expiration\/\" title=\"Johnson &#038; Johnson vaccine shelf life extended as millions of doses near expiration\">-a-half months<\/a> before \u200bIowa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/iowa-gop-caucus-2023-schedule\/44481721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caucuses \u2064convene Jan.\u2063 15<\/a>. That\u2019s the\u2064 kind of extreme lead any candidate would \u200bbe grateful\u200d for \u2014\u2063 and\u2064 there\u2019s no doubt Trump\u200b is.
