In this charged climate,\u200c blue states are stealthily adopting a dangerous new disguise for \u2063CRT \u2062\u2014 \u201cethnic studies\u201d \u2014 which incorporates all that worries Americans about \u200cCRT\u2019s ideology, and plenty more, in a deceptively \u2063appealing package.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To see what\u2019s coming, look \u200bat Minnesota, where this spring \u200blawmakers enacted what are likely the most radical education measures in the nation. This\u200c is ethnic\u2063 studies in its \u201cliberated\u201d form, which\u200c not only teaches race-based identities and \u201cwhite privilege,\u201d but incites students to take action to \u201cdisrupt and dismantle\u201d America\u2019s\u2064 fundamental social and political institutions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1144339976\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-625c239bf4c2e1e79355fcca9e06f275 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-625c239bf4c2e1e79355fcca9e06f275\"><\/div>\n<p>Minnesota\u2019s new K-12 <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/11.15.21-Minnesota-Social-Studies-Standards-Draft-Three-for-Public-Comment.pdf?v=1642100112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social studies standards<\/a> \u2014 now in the final stages of\u2063 rulemaking approval \u2014 exemplify this ideology. The standards add ethnic studies\u2063 to the core social studies disciplines of history, civics,\u200d economics, and geography, and incorporate\u2064 its concepts throughout. One ethnic studies \u201canchor standard,\u201d titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Resistance<\/a>,\u201d is typical. It \u2064requires \u200cstudents to \u2063\u201corganize\u200b with others to resist systemic and coordinated exercises of power\u201d against \u201cmarginalized,\u201d oppressed \u200dgroups.<\/p>\n<p>These new standards and their related benchmarks prime youngsters to view American institutions with \u2064suspicion and hostility from the earliest grades. Kindergartners, for example,\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must<\/a> \u201cretell a \u200bstory about an \u200bunfair experience that\u200d conveys a power imbalance.\u201d First-graders <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">must<\/a> \u201cidentify examples of ethnicity, \u200dequality, liberation and systems of power and use those examples to construct meanings for those terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>High school students will be required to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analyze<\/a> \u200dhow caste systems based upon race, social class, and religion have been\u2062 used to justify imperialism, colonization, warfare, and chattel slavery\u201d\u200b and to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examine<\/a> \u2062the construction\u200c of racialized hierarchies based on colorism and dominant European beauty standards and values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even subjects like geography\u200d are shot through with extremist ethnic studies ideology.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ac29426ed85bf5fb4dfaf184f1375f09 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ac29426ed85bf5fb4dfaf184f1375f09\"><\/div>\n<p>For example,\u200d fourth graders will no longer be required to learn the names and locations of \u2064continents,\u200c the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon, England, or China. Instead, they will \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describe<\/a> places and regions, explaining how \u200bthey\u2063 are influenced by power structures.\u201d When they study states\u2064 and capitals, they must <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include<\/a> \u200b\u201ca recognition of indigenous land these places were built on.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criminal Justice as Oppressive<\/h2>\n<p>The ethnic studies-driven campaign \u200dto discredit American institutions as illegitimate is most clearly evident in the standards that focus on criminal justice. Students will study our police departments and justice system in connection with an ethnic studies <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard<\/a> that requires them to \u201cunderstand the roots\u2062 of contemporary systems of oppression\u201d and \u201celiminate\u201d \u201cinjustices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifth graders,\u2063 for\u200c example, will \u201cexamine contemporary policing\u201d \u200band its alleged \u201chistorical roots in early America.\u201d (The claim is that our police \u2063departments sprang directly from \u200dslave patrols \u2064of the Old South.) Sixth-graders <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=40\" rel=\"nofollow\">will<\/a> \u200c study the \u201cimpact\u201d of \u201cMinnesota\u2019s \u200djuvenile justice system\u201d on youth \u201cfrom historically disenfranchised groups.\u201d \u2063High school standards suggest the notion of <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2021-Minnesota-K-12-Academic-Standards-in-Social-Studies-122022-1.pdf?v=1695916116#page=121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criminality<\/a> \u2062 itself is racist: \u201cExplore how criminality is\u2064 constructed and what\u200b makes a person \u2063a criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biased, misleading instruction of this kind will likely convince many young people that policing and the very idea of criminality are \u2063oppressive, racially \u201cconstructed,\u201d and among the many things schools are instructing \u2062them to \u201cresist.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d7992be991175f32a8b6720e6c6da9c1 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d7992be991175f32a8b6720e6c6da9c1\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advocates\u2019 Ambitious \u200dPlan<\/h2>\n<p>Remarkably, the activist campaign to transform Minnesota\u2019s\u200c public schools has generated minimal public pushback. A key to its success\u2063 was the promotion of ethnic studies as a unifying\u200c cultural \u2062learning experience, while\u200c in fact \u2062it \u200bstokes interracial hostility and\u200d delegitimizes authority. This deceptive strategy is likely to become a \u200bnational model for activists \u200cseeking to transform our K-12 education system.<\/p>\n<p>Across \u2063the country, students\u2019 \u200bexposure to CRT \u2014 think The New York Times\u2019 \u201c1619\u2063 Project\u201d \u2014 initially\u2063 came in piecemeal fashion, through outside\u200c interests such as teachers unions and professional \u2064associations. In contrast, ethnic studies advocates aim to impose \u200dthis corrosive ideology through \u2062government \u200baction, either weaving it through all subjects as a \u201clens\u201d or requiring an ethnic \u2063studies course as a discipline comparable to history or civics.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200d2021, California became the first state to\u2062 make an\u2063 ethnic studies course a high school graduation requirement. Though education officials there adopted a deeply flawed, leftist curriculum, they did so after rejecting an initial \u201cliberated\u201d draft as too radical.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, Minnesota lawmakers have now injected this\u200d extremist version\u2064 not\u200d in one required course for teens but\u2062 in academic standards \u2064for all \u2064subjects, including math and science, from\u200d kindergarten through 12th grade. In \u2064addition, \u2064the ideology has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/legislature-is-planning-an-antiracist-revolution-in-minnesota-schools\/600268149\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hard-wired<\/a> into teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexperiment.org\/controversial-teacher-licensure-changes-now-adopted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">licensing<\/a> requirements and fundamental school mechanics, so the transformation will be difficult to reverse.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extremist \u2064Org Driving\u2062 The Campaign<\/h2>\n<p>Today, ethnic studies may be easier than CRT to sell as a cover\u200c for \u200bradical ideology because it remains largely free of\u200c the \u2063political baggage \u200bthat CRT has accumulated, and sounds appealing to \u2063American ears in a multi-ethnic society that values fairness\u200b and cultural understanding. A 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexperiment.org\/bait-and-switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll<\/a> by the Minneapolis-based Center of the American Experiment found a majority of Minnesotans approve of ethnic \u2062studies in schools \u200cuntil they become aware of its extremist agenda.<\/p>\n<p>In Minnesota\u2019s 2023 legislative session,\u200b Democratic\u2064 leaders and leftist activists took advantage of this \u200cgoodwill by mounting \u2063a coordinated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexperiment.org\/bait-and-switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bait-and-switch<\/a> campaign to deflect public scrutiny. The \u2064campaign\u2063 was spearheaded by a coalition of activist teachers and community\u200c organizers, whose parent organization\u200b is the Minnesota <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edliberation.org\/chapters\/edlibmn\/edlib-mn-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chapter<\/a> \u2064of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edliberation.org\/about-us\/our-vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Education for Liberation Network<\/a>, which has California roots.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of \u201cEdLib MN\u201d is\u200d to \u201cbe a political force\u201d \u2064to \u201ccontend with the status quo of\u2062 colonial education that prioritizes Eurocentric curricula\u201d and \u201cpredominantly\u2064 white educators and administrators,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edliberation.org\/chapters\/edlibmn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>. During the legislative campaign for an ethnic studies mandate in Minnesota schools, the organization retweeted a \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/files.americanexperiment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Screenshot-2023-09-28-at-1.32.10-PM.png?v=1695925968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">graphic<\/a> that called for \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edliberation.org\/our-work\/anti-pic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abolition<\/a>\u201d (not reform) \u201cof\u2064 policing,\u201d and declared that \u201cdefunding the police\u201d means \u201cabolishing the\u2062 social order and building a new society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEdLib MN\u201d leader \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edliberation.org\/team\/brian-lozenski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brian \u2063Lozenski<\/a>, \u2063a\u200d St. Paul-based\u2064 professor who serves on the board of the national \u200bEdLib Network,\u2063 has been candid about\u200c Ed Lib\u2019s \u200dendgame of political upheaval. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/the-black-radical-tradition-can-help-us-imagine-a-more-just-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> titled \u201cThe Black Radical Tradition\u200b Can\u200b Help Us \u200bImagine a More Just World,\u201d which he wrote in \u2064June\u2064 2020, he described the George Floyd riots in Minneapolis as \u201cmass uprisings against racialized state violence,\u201d which \u200cportend \u201cthe inevitable death\u201d of the American \u201csocial order that prioritizes vulgar economics.\u201d After\u2062 Covid closings, Lozenski declared, \u201cSchools need only reopen if they\u2063 join the social unrest and actively combat the greater public health crisis of \u2063systemic racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calculated Deception<\/h2>\n<p>At the state capitol in St. Paul, however, \u2062savvy activists and their Democratic legislative allies lobbied for liberated ethnic \u200dstudies using \u200ba benign, inclusive \u201ckumbaya\u201d message. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.house.mn.gov\/comm\/docs\/iQA2yKz__ki0C-OHOCk33Q.pdf\">framed<\/a> ethnic studies as unifying: \u201cAn unequaled opportunity to bridge \u2063the \u2064ethnic and \u200dcultural divide\u201d in Minnesota classrooms by \u201cinvit[ing] students to more deeply explore\u201d the state\u2019s \u201cmany diverse cultures and histories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen everyone gets a chance\u2062 to learn about everyone in their community,\u201d read one promotional piece, \u201cit brings \u2062us closer.\u201d A legislative sponsor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexperiment.org\/bait-and-switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">portrayed<\/a> ethnic studies \u2062as a way to cultivate the sort of cultural pride her children felt when encouraged to\u200b bring their Lebanese food and gowns to school.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Lib\u2019s Lozenski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?list=PL215WnxBOAewFiluh3iEtqDI3UMT8YBT-&#038;t=830&#038;v=3KPaZUlTTY0&#038;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">served<\/a> \u2063as a chief testifier for the primary ethnic\u200b studies bill. He did not disclose his radical \u200bagenda or connections but held himself out as a concerned parent who favors ethnic studies because it will\u2064 provide Minnesota students\u2064 with the \u201cintra- and inter-cultural knowledge\u201d they need in a \u201cglobalized world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethnic studies advocates\u2019 entire legislative \u200cstrategy was marked by calculated deception and lack \u2064of transparency. Sweeping proposals \u2063to infuse \u201cliberated\u201d ideology through K-12 schools were subtly woven throughout bills that were pushed \u200bthrough at \u200bbreakneck speed, using slickly packaged testimony and often omitting examination\u200b of the legislation\u2019s actual text. Earnest students flocked \u2064to the capitol to appeal to\u2062 legislators in person\u200b \u2014\u2062 in line\u2063 with Ed Lib\u2019s national strategy of portraying the campaign for \u200dethnic studies as \u201cstudent-led.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final omnibus bill not only entrenched ethnic \u2062studies throughout Minnesota\u2019s K-12 education\u200b system, it also\u2063 created \u2063a permanent \u201cEthnic Studies Working Group\u201d at the Minnesota\u200d Department of\u200d Education to implement the mandate. By law,\u200b the members of this powerful group \u2014 which will design a\u2064 statewide ethnic studies framework, recommend teacher training, and develop instructional\u200d resources\u2063 \u2014 \u200bmust\u200c be chosen \u201cwith input\u201d from EdLib MN\u2019s Ethnic Studies coalition. As a result, going forward, the political extremists who launched the crusade to hijack Minnesota\u2019s public education system\u2064 will play a central role \u200cin determining what students learn in history, civics, language arts, math, and science classrooms across the state.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">St. Paul Schools Show What\u2019s Coming<\/h2>\n<p>To see what\u2019s coming for Minnesota\u2019s roughly 500 district and charter schools, look at the \u2064St. Paul Public Schools, \u2063where a \u201ccritical ethnic\u200b studies\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1h6ZjEBn8hwdJjHdAXPqX-sNbGKx15I2nuE1rMhwgbZ4\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">course<\/a> became a \u2063graduation requirement in 2021. School officials <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1CxKPiarcocRuNylEiVbO1RZDLSlxIQreWS3JNUpLBTM\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">designed<\/a> the curriculum in consultation with Lozenski and other ethnic studies activists.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064St. Paul <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1-Ua2txX8Yd3SmSmNgp8WAUzocEbsaWXBeUGP8uzJFVY\/edit#slide=id.gef14f7bb51_0_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">curriculum<\/a> does not cultivate \u200bmutual understanding but pushes students\u200c to form\u2062 tribalized \u200cidentities and stokes defiance of authority. It exhorts 16-year-olds to \u201cbuild\u201d a race- and ethnicity-based \u201cnarrative of transformative resistance,\u201d to\u200c \u201cchallenge and\u200b expose\u201d \u201csystems \u2063of inequality,\u201d and to\u200b \u201cresist all systems of \u200doppressive power rooted in racism through collective action\u2062 and change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Related artwork,\u2063 labeled\u200d \u201cseeds of resistance,\u201d announces school-approved targets of politicized resistance. This artwork promotes the\u200c liberated \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edliberation.org\/our-work\/anti-pic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abolitionist<\/a>\u201d agenda, and features protest signs that \u200bread \u201cNo Bans\/No Walls\u201d and \u201cAbolish Prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, St. Paul students and parents\u200b lament growing disrespect for teachers and dangerous hallways. Youth crime in the city is rising, and in\u200b a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2023\/05\/03\/st-paul-schools-high-school-staff-feel-unsafe-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey,<\/a> a majority of St. Paul high school faculty and staff report that they \u200bfeel \u201cunsafe\u201d or \u201cvery unsafe\u201d at school. What will happen as ethnic studies further delegitimizes authority there?<\/p>\n<p>Similar <a href=\"https:\/\/convergencemag.com\/articles\/fight-for-ethnic-studies-moves-to-k-12-classrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaigns<\/a> are underway in other states, not only California \u2014 where <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies-coalition.org\/coalition-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activists<\/a> \u2064are now going school district to school district to sell the \u201cliberated\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberatedethnicstudies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">version<\/a> that failed at the state level \u2014 but\u2063 in \u200dWashington, Oregon,\u2063 Vermont, and elsewhere. Minnesota provides a cautionary tale.
