Jamaal Bowman fell\u200c under intense scrutiny (and mockery) after he\u200d appeared \u200dto be caught red-handed pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon Office Building.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BREAKING: Capitol police \u200brelease photo of \u200bJamaal Bowman \u200bpulling the \u2064fire alarm. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XpUoEu9lU4\">pic.twitter.com\/XpUoEu9lU4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Price (@greg_price11) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1708192193993703504?\">September 30, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The prevailing theory is that \u2064Bowman pulled\u200c the juvenile stunt as a means to delay a critical vote on passing a bill meant\u2063 to avert a government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a prevalent theory that Bowman has vociferously denied \u2014 even as he admitted\u200d to pulling the alarm in the first place late Saturday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Statement from Congressman Jamaal Bowman. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v6qjdHNI7T\">pic.twitter.com\/v6qjdHNI7T<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Congressman Jamaal Bowman (@RepBowman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBowman\/status\/1708299648782262656?\">October 1, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;I want to personally clear up confusion surrounding today&#8217;s events,&#8221; Bowman wrote in \u2064a statement. &#8220;Today, as I\u2063 was rushing to make\u2062 a vote, I came to a door that is usually open for votes but would not open. I am embarrassed\u2064 to \u2062admit that I\u2064 activated the fire alarm, mistakenly \u2063thinking\u200b it would open the door.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I regret this and sincerely \u200dapologize for any confusion this caused.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I \u200cwant to \u2064be very clear, this was not me, in any\u2064 way, trying to delay any \u2063vote. It was the \u200bexact opposite \u2014 I was trying urgently\u2064 to get to a vote, which\u200d I ultimately did and\u2062 joined my colleagues in a bipartisan effort \u2063to \u2062keep our government open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The \u200dbeleaguered representative \u2064eventually added: &#8220;My hope is that no one will make more of this\u2063 than it was. I am working hard \u2062every day, including today, to do my\u2063 job, to do \u2063it well, and deliver for \u2063my constituents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough Rep. Bowman. This writer won&#8217;t\u200c make\u200b more of this\u200c than it was. This writer will actually take you\u200c completely at \u200bface\u2064 value and acquiesce \u2064that you had no idea \u2062what you \u2062were doing.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves just two options, however: Rep. Bowman is either aggressively blind or incredibly dumb \u2014 neither of which is a particularly sterling\u200b endorsement of \u2064the progressive\u200c &#8220;squad&#8221; member.<\/p>\n<p>Why such a harsh assessment of Bowman?<\/p>\n<p>Well\u2026 just look at this viral image\u2062 of the door that Bowman was trying to &#8220;use,&#8221; courtesy of reporter \u2062John Bresnahan:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This\u2062 is the door that \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepBowman?\">@RepBowman<\/a>\u2069\u200c used to leave \u200dthe Cannon Building <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OiUVB0iyJ4\">pic.twitter.com\/OiUVB0iyJ4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Bresnahan (@bresreports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bresreports\/status\/1708247334998454304?\">September 30, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For anyone who&#8217;s never been a part of\u200b civilized society before, the above image is the \u200bstandard\u200d image of a door that\u200b is rather\u2063 clearly demarcated\u200d as an \u2063&#8221;Emergency Exit Only.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So if Bowman was indeed not attempting to obstruct this vote (of note, Bowman did vote \u2062along with \u2062the\u2064 continuing resolution, which\u2063 does genuinely raise the question of why he&#8217;d want to delay that, though perhaps by then, Bowman already knew \u2064his fire alarm stunt had failed and thus toed the line), and \u200dthis was an honest mistake\u2026 boy, what an honest mistake it is.<\/p>\n<p>Because if Bowman really\u200c had no nefarious or ulterior motives for this stunt, it\u2064 just leaves the following\u200d possibilities \u2014 and questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bowman has never seen a fire alarm\u2062 or emergency door \u2014 Does America really need a \u2062representative who is so\u200b sequestered in his echo chamber that he doesn&#8217;t\u200b recognize what most\u2063 4th \u200bgraders would?<\/li>\n<li>Bowman can&#8217;t read \u2014 Wouldn&#8217;t this present its own\u2062 can\u200c of \u200dworms for a sitting U.S. lawmaker?<\/li>\n<li>Bowman\u2062 can&#8217;t see \u2014 Wouldn&#8217;t this also be an issue for a U.S.\u200c lawmaker?<\/li>\n<li>Bowman \u2062doesn&#8217;t care \u2062\u2014 \u2064Wouldn&#8217;t it\u200c be nice to have some Republicans with\u2063 a backbone who&#8217;ll actually \u2063act against this nonsense?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As to that last bullet \u2064point, it does appear that \u200dRepublicans are\u200b gearing up for some sort of punishment to be levied against \u200dBowman,\u200c with possible punishments\u200d ranging from censure to expulsion.<\/p>\n<p>Given that Republicans\u2063 have been rather ineffectual these last couple \u200cof years and Democrats haven&#8217;t\u2062 cared in \u200ddecades, this writer is not going \u200cto hold his breath that\u2062 anything happens to \u2063Bowman.<\/p>\n<p>But in all seriousness: If a grown man cannot discern between a\u2062 door and\u2063 alarm that is clearly \u200cmarked for fires \u2062and emergencies, and a standard door meant to whisk you to the great \u2062outdoors (again, this is\u200c his\u2063 explanation), how \u2063can anyone trust this man to discern between issues that will actually affect his constituents?<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_subscription_pitch\">.author_subscription_pitch p{margin:5px;}<\/p>\n<p><em><b>A Note from Our Staff:<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did you know\u200c that \u206290\u200c percent of advertisers will have nothing to do with\u200d The Western Journal?
