Such is the sorry tale of the shooting of Tanner Cook by Alan Colie in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Cook is the 21-year-old behind \u200ca \u2063YouTube channel called \u201cClassified Goons;\u201d half that title is true,\u2062 and you can\u2063 probably guess which half it is by the fact we know his name.<\/p>\n<p>By the evidence \u200cgiven on YouTube, this man has spent his one score and one\u200d year of life on earth \u2064wasting our\u2064 carbon and oxygen\u2064 so that he could build a modest following on social\u200c media pulling pranks like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>WARNING:\u2063 The following \u2064video contains graphic language\u200c that some viewers will\u200b find offensive.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u200d hope you didn\u2019t watch\u2063 that whole \u200dthing, \u200cbecause that\u2019s \u206211 minutes \u2064of time you\u2019ll never get back.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, Cook was pulling a prank inside\u2064 Dulles\u2062 Town Center in Sterling, Virginia when he approached Colie, a 31-year-old DoorDash driver picking\u2062 up an order. As part of the prank, Cook shoved a \u200bcell phone in\u200b Colie\u2019s face; the\u2064 phone was playing a \u200bnonsensical clip that, to this \u2064untrained\u200b ear, \u200dseems to\u2064 be a computer-generated woman\u2019s voice saying \u201cYou\u2019re thinking about my\u200c twinkle;\u201d WUSA-TV reported it was done via Google Translate. Meanwhile, one of Cook\u2019s friends was recording from\u200c afar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe video shows\u2064 Colie backing away from Cook, telling \u2064Cook to stop three times and trying to push the \u2063cellphone away from\u2062 his face,\u201d WRC-TV \u200creported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter\u2062 about\u2062 20 seconds, Colie pulled\u2063 out a gun and shot Cook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The injuries were nonfatal, obviously, but the footage is disturbing nonetheless:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>WARNING: The following video \u2063contains graphic language \u2062that some viewers \u200dwill find offensive.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Colie told the\u2062 jury that he was frightened \u2062because both \u2063Cook and his friend looked \u201creally cold\u200d and\u200d angry\u201d and said he\u2019d started\u2063 carrying the gun because he\u2019d seen reports about other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cyprus-to-try-six-over-alleged-plot-against-israelis\/\" title=\"Cyprus to Try Six over Alleged Plot Against Israelis\">food delivery drivers<\/a> being targets of robberies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColie walked into the\u2062 mall to do his job with no \u200dintention of interacting with\u200b Tanner \u200cCook. None,\u201d said Adam Pouilliard, Colie\u2019s attorney. \u201cHe\u2019s sitting next \u200bto his defense attorneys right \u2062now. How\u2019s that for a consequence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-youtuber-harasses-the-wrong-guy-finds-himself-gutshot-after-refusing-to-let-up\/\" title=\"Video: YouTuber Harasses Stranger, Pays the Price for Not Backing Down\">gutshot goon case divided opinion<\/a>, both on social \u200cmedia and in \u2063the jury box. Prosecutors took\u200c the \u200dapproach that \u201cColie took a gun to \u2064a cellphone fight,\u201d according to \u2064WRC, while many felt\u2064 that Cook \u200bhad harassed\u200d a stranger in public and that\u2063 he felt rightfully afraid.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063jury mostly sided with Colie, according \u200cto WUSA, returning a not guilty verdict on charges \u2063of aggravated malicious\u200c wounding\u2064 or use \u2064of a firearm for aggravated malicious wounding.<\/p>\n<p>He was, however, found guilty on\u2064 a charge of\u200d malicious discharge of a firearm within an occupied dwelling. To be short, the jury found that he had a reasonable claim to self-defense in the situation\u200b but still shouldn\u2019t have fired within a mall. The charge \u2063carries a potential 10-year sentence in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Cook appeared with \u200dhis mother outside Loudoun County Courthouse \u200dafter the verdict \u2014 and as you\u2064 can see, getting shot in the abdomen has made him no\u200b less of an odious twit:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cook\u2019s mother said she was \u201cjust grateful and thankful that I have my\u2064 son here and\u200b nothing else \u200cmatters right now.\u201d Then, her\u200b son acted the fool in front\u200c of WUSA\u2019s \u2064cameras and said that he would keep on making prank \u200cvideos, \u200dwith mom just\u2064 laughing it off.<\/p>\n<p>So, to start with, I\u2019d \u2062say that yes, something else\u200c matters right now, and that\u2019s \u2062the fact that what appears\u2064 to be 21 years of failed parenting\u2062 isn\u2019t coming to an end even after her son got shot in the gut because he was menacing a DoorDash\u2062 driver to rake\u2062 in that sweet YouTube cash. (Which, by the \u2064way, \u200baccounts for\u200d up to $3,000 a month, according to WUSA.)<\/p>\n<p>As for Cook\u2019s message to those who might have a problem \u2062with his content, an \u2063unrepentant Cook \u2064said, \u2062\u201cI dunno, I guess they\u2019ll\u2064 just have to keep watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Was \u200che disappointed in the verdict? In response to that, \u2062Cook brought out everyone\u2019s favorite meaningless, tautological phrase and then invoked the Almighty: \u201cI \u200creally\u2062 don\u2019t care. I mean, it is what it is,\u201d \u200bCook said. \u201cIt\u2019s God\u2019s plan at the end\u200b of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Look, I \u200csuppose if you \u2063believe in some form \u200cof Calvinist \u2063strict theological determinism, I guess you\u200c could say\u2062 it was \u2062part\u200c of the Almighty\u2019s\u2062 plan for\u2064 Cook \u2063to harass a DoorDash driver to get likes and\u2063 clicks, and \u2064instead get shot in the process. However, even\u200d as someone who tends toward reformed theology, I\u2019d still cast\u2063 a skeptical eye on the idea that this was part of\u2063 \u201cGod\u2019s plan at the\u200c end \u200bof the day\u201d any more than\u200b any act\u2062 of sin or depravity is part of God\u2019s plan\u2063 at the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Has Tanner Cook \u200dlearned \u200banything?\u2063 No. If anything, he\u2019s emerged more infamous than ever before \u2014 \u2062and, in his little world, infamous still counts as famous. (The word \u201cfamous\u201d is in there, after all \u2014 and\u2064 in \u200ba post-Kardashian era, what\u2019s the difference?)<\/p>\n<p>As\u200b for Colie, one is loath to\u200d recommend pulling a gun on\u2063 someone who is harassing you in a minatory fashion, but this is \u200bthe low-trust society \u200dwe \u2064live in. The jury\u2019s \u200cdecision still leaves him on the look for less serious charges; according to the New York\u200d Daily \u2062News, a judge will hear \u2062arguments \u2063on that charge \u200cin a few\u200d weeks time.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe part of \u200c\u201cGod\u2019s plan\u201d is for dim social media\u2062 harassers who want to be\u200b the\u200c next Tanner \u200bCook to look\u200d at this and \u2063be dissuaded \u2014\u200d or for those who are menaced \u2062by these morons to show\u200c a soup\u00e7on\u200c of patience and restraint. As it stands now, however, this seems like Tanner Cook\u2019s plan \u200dmore\u200b than anyone else\u2019s. And sadly, this is how\u200b it all ended.<\/p>\n<p>Before it\u2019s too late, perhaps our \u201cClassified Goon\u201d ought to consider\u200d the words of Proverbs 16: \u201cThe Lord has made everything for\u2062 its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.\u2062 Everyone who\u2064 is arrogant in heart \u2063is an\u200d abomination to the Lord; be\u200c assured, he will not go unpunished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That, Mr. \u2063Cook, is God\u2019s plan.
