Jamaal Bowman<\/a> \u2062 of New York was apparently so eager to cause a shutdown that he actually committed a criminal offense.<\/p>\n<p>Cameras caught the congressman pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon Building on Saturday morning just before \u2062the House stopgap vote \u2063took place, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/30\/politics\/jamaal-bowman-pulls-fire-alarm\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According\u200d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/30\/us\/politics\/jamaal-bowman-fire-alarm-house.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>, Democrats were trying to delay the vote when Bowman pulled the alarm. (He ended up \u2063voting for the measure, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/09\/30\/us\/politics\/shutdown-live.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Times<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Pulling a fire \u2062alarm in a\u2063 building\u2063 filled with people is a grave\u2063 offense, capable of causing panic and potential harm, especially considering the presence of \u200bolder \u2063lawmakers within the building. But the larger crime is the attempt to disrupt official proceedings, an act as several\u2064 prominent political\u2064 voices\u200c have pointed out, is the same crime Jan 6 defendants are\u200d being\u200c held for.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman\u2019s office\u2064 claimed it was an accident, and Bowman told reporters he thought the alarm would\u2064 open the\u2063 door because he was trying to get to his \u200dvote, and the door wasn\u2019t open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just trying to get to my vote,\u201d Bowman told \u2062reporters, according to\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/squad-dem-jamaal-bowman-offers-bizarre-response-pulling-fire-alarm-open-door\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>. \u2063\u201cThe door that\u2019s usually \u200copen\u200d wasn\u2019t open. And you know, I \u200bdidn\u2019t \u2064mean to cause confusion\u2026\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know I was going \u200cto trip the\u2064 whole\u2062 building. I thought\u200d it would help me open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it just happened to \u200chappen while his \u2064party was trying to keep a \u200bvote \u200cfrom taking place on the House floor? \u200cMaybe.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a question from \u2064a reporter, \u200bHouse Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mccarthy-says-doesnt-want-part-republican-team-passing-continuing-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin McCarthy<\/a> called it \u2064an \u201cembarrassment\u201d and\u2062 said the ethics committee should \u201clook at this,\u201d according to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an embarrassment. You are elected to\u2064 be a member of Congress. You pulled a fire alarm, \u200cin a \u2063(matter) \u200bof hours \u2062before the government being shut down,\u200b trying to dictate\u2064 that the government would shut\u200b down?\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really appalled watching Democrats\u2019 actions today, to delay\u200d it to get to a shutdown, McCarthy said. \u201cBut when we found that an individual \u2064elected to Congress would pull a fire alarm \u2014\u200d that\u2019s a new low,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe watched how people have been \u2063treated if they\u2019ve done something wrong in this Capitol \u2014 it will be interesting to see how he is treated. She seemed to be quoting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/1512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18\u200c U.S.C. Section 1512(c)<\/a>, part two of which \u200cof which states:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c[Anyone who] \u2062 otherwise \u200bobstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so, is \u200csubject to fines under \u200cthis title or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is\u200d the law that January 6 \u200bdefendants are being locked up, they\u2019re\u2063 rotting in jail and they\u2019re being prosecuted every single day\u2062 \u2026 nonviolent offenders are being put in jail for this,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n<p>Other prominent voices are also calling for\u2063 equal treatment under the \u2064law.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Rep. Lisa McClain, from Michigan, is circulating a resolution to censure\u200b Bowman over the incident, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>But\u200b Bowman \u200cthinks \u200cit\u2019s funny, laughing it off with, \u201cThey\u2019re gonna do what they do.\u2062 This\u2064 is what they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman can \u2063laugh because he\u2062 knows his Democrat allies in the House will support, protect and defend him.
