Then, four-time \u2063MVP quarterback\u2062 Aaron \u2062Rodgers snapped\u200d his Achilles tendon four plays into his first game, and Jets fans are now left wondering whether <a href=\"https:\/\/jetsxfactor.com\/2023\/09\/26\/the-office-star-pitch-ny-jets-following-defeat\/\">Dwight from \u2018The Office\u2019<\/a> could \u200cbe \u200ba solution \u2064to a season that\u2062 already feels over.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So what \u200dshould the Jets do next? According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/11\/to-see-the-way-forward-look-back\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>, the \u2064best way to find a way\u2064 forward is to examine \u2063the past. When it comes to the search for a\u2062 quarterback solution for\u200d the Jets, it\u2019s a tragic retrospective.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The history of \u200dthe Jets and the quarterback position \u2063starts off with a bang \u2014\u200c Joe Namath. \u2018Broadway\u200c Joe\u2019 took the sports world by storm in 1969 when he guaranteed the lowly AFL Jets would win the Super\u2064 Bowl. His victory launched a celebrity career that made him the NFL\u2019s first and only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/nfl-legend-joe-namath-grills-zach-wilson-as-jets-starter-ive-seen-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pantyhose model<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Notable \u200bJets quarterbacks after Namath included gunslinger Richard Todd, who, like Namath, played in\u200b college for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Todd helmed the\u2063 \u2018New York Sack Exchange\u2019 teams in\u200b the early 1980s \u2014 \u2063the first \u2063teams to have a winning record since Namath\u2019s 1969 Super Bowl team. Others to reach stardom include Boomer Esiason, now a\u2062 sports radio giant in New York City, and even the\u200d fictional superhero Flash Gordon, who when he wasn\u2019t fighting Ming the\u200d Merciless on planet\u200b Mongo, was slinging touchdowns for the Jets.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s in the past 25 years that everything about the \u2063Jets and \u200bthe quarterback position has turned to misery. In 1998, Vinny Testaverde had\u200d one of the best seasons in Jets history, falling just short of the Super Bowl.\u200b The Jets came into the next season as Super \u200cBowl favorites, only to see Testaverde <a href=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/nfl\/news\/1999\/0912\/53587.html\">tear his \u200cAchilles<\/a> \u200b in the first game.<\/p>\n<p>The next Jets quarterback to \u200dgive the team a fighting chance was Chad Pennington, \u200ca cerebral Tennessee native \u2062who played with Randy Moss in college, and who the \u200dHall of Fame wide receiver once said was the best quarterback he\u2019d ever\u200b played with. That was, of\u200d course, before Pennington tore his \u2062rotator cuff, \u2064and lost \u2063all his arm strength. More than a decade later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/nfl-legend-joe-namath-grills-zach-wilson-as-jets-starter-ive-seen-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fans still wonder<\/a> \u200dwhat his career could have been if he never got hurt.<\/p>\n<p>While the Jets suffered through quarterback misfortune \u200bin the\u2062 early\u200b 2000s, the New England\u2062 Patriots managed to \u2064win three Super Bowls \u2014 all behind a quarterback who was under center in Foxborough thanks\u2064 to none other than the \u200bJets. It was 22 years ago this month that Jets linebacker Mo Lewis delivered a crushing blow \u2063on Patriots quarterback\u2062 Drew Bledsoe that punctured the veteran\u2019s lung \u2014 and cleared the\u2064 way for Tom Brady, who went on to \u2063win the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>And contributing to those who believe the Jets are cursed at quarterback, Brady should have probably been playing for \u200cNew York the whole time. A few months before legendary coach\u200d Bill Belichick drafted Brady in the 6th round for the Patriots, \u2062Belichick was hired to be the head coach for the Jets. It\u2019s an easy piece of football history to \u200bforget, \u2062as Belichick lasted just a\u200b single day in January 2000 \u2014 he wrote his\u200c resignation note on a napkin after the Jets\u2063 declined to\u2063 give him\u200d enough control of personnel decisions. He joined the Patriots three weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>While Belichick and Brady dominated the league, the Jets failed to find a decent quarterback. The closest they came was likely \u2063the 2008 campaign \u2062of a nearly 40-year-old Brett Favre \u2014 who was \u2064performing magnificently until, of course, he tore his bicep in the \u200dmiddle of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Favre was \u2062followed by Mark Sanchez, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/espn-continues-to-say-racism-is-the-reason-for-lack-of-black-quarterbacks-in-the-nfl\/\" title=\"ESPN Continues To Say Racism Is The Reason For Lack Of Black Quarterbacks In The NFL\">high draft pick<\/a> from USC who was buoyed by one of the best defenses in NFL history. Sanchez has on his resum\u00e9 some of the greatest wins in Jets history \u2063\u2014 on his way to back-to-back AFC championship \u200cgames in his first two \u200bseasons, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cursed-at-quarterback-a-miserable-fans-history-of-the-new-york-jets\/\" title=\"The New York Jets: A Fan's Curse\">won road playoff games<\/a> against\u2062 not only Tom Brady, but also Peyton Manning.<\/p>\n<p>Those wins,\u200d however,\u200b were largely thanks to a defense led by coach Rex Ryan and his defensive scheme. And then\u200b in 2012, with Sanchez\u2019s\u2064 play on the decline, there was the Thanksgiving Day\u200c \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/videos\/mark-sanchez-s-butt-fumble-against-patriots\">Butt Fumble<\/a>,\u201d which still lives in infamy as one of the worst plays in team history. Sanchez was gone at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets then went with another draft pick, Geno\u200c Smith, who got punched in the face by one of his Jets teammates during his failed stint in New York. Geno is now a Pro Bowl-level quarterback playing across the country for the Seattle Seahawks, who are coached by former Jets head coach Pete Carroll.<\/p>\n<p>The Jets spent another high draft pick in \u20642018 on USC quarterback Sam Darnold,\u200d but the team around him was so \u2062bad that Darnold never really had\u2062 a chance. He lasted only 3 seasons.<\/p>\n<p>And then \u2062the Jets spent an even higher draft pick in 2021 on BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, and\u2064 even though the roster around him is one of the best the Jets have assembled\u200b since Testaverde had the reins\u2062 in 1999, Wilson is so bad that the team still doesn\u2019t have a chance. Aside from maybe Johnny Manziel, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/nfl-legend-joe-namath-grills-zach-wilson-as-jets-starter-ive-seen-enough\/\">recently disclosed<\/a> that he watched \u201czero\u201d film while in the\u200b league, it\u2019s hard to recall seeing \u200ba more clueless player on a football team.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson is back under center this season after the injury to Rodgers, \u2062but likely \u2062won\u2019t survive his third \u2064season.<\/p>\n<p>So, where do the Jets turn from here? The answer can\u2019t be more of Wilson, whose play has \u200bJets fans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/nfl-legend-joe-namath-grills-zach-wilson-as-jets-starter-ive-seen-enough\/\">spitting out their teeth in disgust<\/a> and has even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/nfl-legend-joe-namath-grills-zach-wilson-as-jets-starter-ive-seen-enough\/\">lost the support of Joe Namath<\/a>, generally \u2064a \u2063cheerleader for his former squad.<\/p>\n<p>Retired backup quarterbacks have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/news\/chad-henne-says-he-turned-down-opportunity-with-jets-after-aaron-rodgers-injury\/\">rejected the Jets\u2019 pleas<\/a> for them to return. Tom Brady, \u2062who, and I repeat, could have easily been drafted by the Jets,\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/tom-brady-shuts-down-idea-returning-play-jets-next-question\">said no<\/a>. And the Jets don\u2019t seem interested in those who actually want to join the team, which\u2064 include\u2064 the aforementioned <a href=\"https:\/\/jetsxfactor.com\/2023\/09\/26\/the-office-star-pitch-ny-jets-following-defeat\/\">Dwight from \u2018The Office\u2019<\/a> and, perhaps more absurd, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/09\/26\/colin-kaepernick-appeals-to-jets-in-letter-for-practice-squad-chance\/\">Colin Kaepernick<\/a>, who just a couple \u200bof years ago compared \u200bthe NFL to a slave plantation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>By the time any other cratering team (i.e. the\u200d Minnesota Vikings) is willing to trade their quarterback, it probably won\u2019t be worth it \u2014 \u200cthe Jets are already looking up in\u200d the division standings, and in the next three weeks they play the two teams who faced off in last year\u2019s Super Bowl: the Kansas \u200bCity Chiefs and \u200dPhiladelphia\u2064 Eagles.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The best\u2063 remaining hope is likely a medical\u200d miracle.\u200b Rodgers, an expert in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2022\/aug\/09\/aaron-rodgers-ayahuasca-drugs-nfl-football-green-bay-packers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experimental\u200b medicine<\/a>, received an unprecedented \u2064Achilles surgery by \u2064California doctor Neal ElAttrache, who was discovered by legendary athlete Kobe Bryant. The doctor put a\u200b \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/2023\/09\/17\/aaron-rodgers-achilles-surgery-speed-bridge-return-timeline-jets-playoffs-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speed bridge<\/a>\u201d in Rodgers, designed to accelerate his healing.<\/p>\n<p>And Rodgers was\u2063 seen on Thursday already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/nyjets\/comments\/16uy6q6\/aaron_rodgers_is_out_of_the_walking_boot_after_3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">out of \u2064his walking boot<\/a>, just three weeks after surgery. It generally takes at least twice as long. He is expected to be on the sideline for the team\u2019s\u200b next game.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/ill-be-back-j6uK36y32LxQs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">So you\u2019re telling me there\u2019s a chance<\/a>? Not really. But a miracle Rodgers return may be more likely than an\u2063 in-season transformation by Wilson, who may be playing the \u2063quarterback position <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barstoolsports.com\/blog\/3485943\/zach-wilson-is-the-worst-ever-and-will-always-be-the-worst-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worse than it has ever been \u200dplayed<\/a> at the NFL level.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-financial-bubbles-that-made-gamestop-look-like-nothing\/\" title=\"5 Financial \u2018Bubbles\u2019 That Made Gamestop Look Like Nothing\">make matters worse<\/a>, one of the \u200donly Jets quarterbacks in recent\u2064 memory to perform as bad as Wilson, \u200dTrevor Siemien, was just brought back on the squad as a potential \u200creplacement.<\/p>\n<p>At this point,\u200c it\u2019s hard to deny that the\u200c Jets are cursed at quarterback. But\u2062 sports\u200d curses end. \u200cThe \u2063Curse of the Billy Goat lasted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curse_of_the_Billy_Goat\">71 \u200dyears<\/a> on the Chicago\u200d Cubs, and the \u200bCurse of the Bambino took <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curse_of_the_Bambino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">86 years<\/a> on the Boston Red Sox.
