Gavin Newsom has signed into law a groundbreaking legislation that has been dubbed the Full Employment for Robots Act. While that\u200c may not be its official name, the\u2063 implications are clear: California&#8217;s new fast-food minimum wage will be a staggering $20 per hour, a significant $4.50 increase compared to the state&#8217;s minimum wage for other industries.<\/p>\n<p>The government of\u200c California believes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-california-fast-food-restaurants-at-center-of-criminal-threats\/\" title=\"Report: California Fast Food Restaurants at Center of Criminal Threats\">fast-food workers<\/a> should have the opportunity to \u2062turn their jobs into long-term careers, rather than just being seen as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/many-employers-are-dropping-bachelors-degree-requirements\/\" title=\"Many Employers Are Dropping Bachelor\u2019s Degree Requirements\">entry-level positions<\/a> for teenagers. Governor Newsom stated, &#8220;We have the opportunity to \u200creward \u2062their contribution, \u2064acknowledge their sacrifice, and stabilize an\u2062 industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>A Cruel April Fools&#8217; \u200dJoke?<\/h3>\n<p>However, the implementation of this new wage rate is likely to have unintended consequences. Starting from April \u20631st next year, the $20 minimum wage may inadvertently lead to the rise of automated systems in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-chick-fil-a-employees-never-say-youre-welcome\/\" title=\"Why Chick-Fil-A Employees Never Say \u201cYou\u2019re Welcome\u201d\">fast-food industry<\/a>. We \u2062have already witnessed \u200cthe emergence of self-checkout \u2062lanes and ordering kiosks, and there\u2064 are reports of robots \u2063being developed to prepare food. It seems that the law may inadvertently accelerate the automation of \u200djobs in the industry.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u200c worth noting that the $20 minimum wage only applies to fast-food workers employed by companies with more than 60\u2063 nationwide locations.\u200d Other industries\u200c and companies will continue to adhere to the $15.50 minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, companies that make their own bread on-premises, such as Panera\u200c Bread, are exempt from this new wage requirement. It&#8217;s just another example of the peculiarities of California&#8217;s labor laws.<\/p>\n<p>Underlying the wage increase\u200c is the effort by unions to organize fast-food workers. In exchange for supporting the $20 wage, unions\u2063 in the state have agreed to\u2064 halt their \u2063push to hold\u200c franchising corporations liable for\u2063 the actions of independent franchisees.<\/p>\n<p>While this new law may be seen as a victory for fast-food workers, it may also have unintended consequences.
