Gavin Newsom (D-CA) while barely mentioning his top 2024 Republican rival, Gov.\u2062 Ron DeSantis (R-FL).<\/p>\n<p>Trump didn&#8217;t waste any time in criticizing \u200cNewsom, who has become a key\u2063 surrogate \u200bfor President\u2063 Joe Biden&#8217;s reelection campaign. The crowd of Republicans erupted in \u2062loud boos as\u2064 Trump mocked Newsom&#8217;s tenure as mayor of San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2063 it wasn&#8217;t just Newsom who faced Trump&#8217;s wrath. The former president also took aim \u2064at other \u200cCalifornia Democrats, including Rep. Maxine Waters, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Rep. Adam Schiff.<\/p>\n<p>However, the lack of repeated attacks against DeSantis is a clear indication that Trump \u2062is shifting his focus beyond the GOP primary and positioning himself as a general \u2063election nominee.<\/p>\n<h3>Trump&#8217;s Criticisms of Newsom<\/h3>\n<p>Trump didn&#8217;t hold back when it came to Newsom&#8217;s role in the recent Republican National Convention debate. He accused Newsom\u200c of being\u200b crooked Joe Biden&#8217;s top surrogate,\u2062 suggesting that Newsom\u200c doesn&#8217;t believe Biden will make it.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also highlighted Newsom&#8217;s appearance on \u2064Sean Hannity&#8217;s show, \u2062where he claimed that Newsom described California as &#8220;wonderful.&#8221; Trump countered by stating\u200d that \u200bthe state is currently in a \u200dmess.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Trump criticized Newsom&#8217;s support of environmental\u2062 issues, accusing him and the radical left\u2063 Democrats of prioritizing the \u2063protection of an unimportant fish over the needs of the people.<\/p>\n<h3>DeSantis&#8217;s Late Mention<\/h3>\n<p>It took Trump over 75 \u200bminutes into his speech\u2064 to mention DeSantis. He boasted about beating the governor \u2063in national polls and shared an anecdote about \u2064endorsing DeSantis&#8217;s first gubernatorial bid, referring to \u200dhim derisively as &#8220;Ron DeSanctimonious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s Dominance in Polls<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s strong lead in national polling was evident, with him consistently polling over 40 percentage points\u2062 ahead \u2064of his Republican competitors. \u200cAccording to a RealClearPolitics poll average, he currently enjoys 57.1% of \u2062GOP support, while DeSantis trails at 14%.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis&#8217;s Criticisms of Trump<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, DeSantis has been increasingly critical\u2063 of Trump in recent months.\u2064 He took shots at\u2063 the former president during the debate, questioning \u200bhis leadership and \u200cdecision to skip the event for the second time.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis&#8217;s Campaign Pushback<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis&#8217;s campaign and super PAC Never Back Down have \u200dalso pushed back against California&#8217;s GOP changing delegate allocation rules, which they believe would benefit Trump. The new rule awards all 169 delegates\u200d to the candidate who receives over 50% of the primary\u200b vote, the highest delegate count in any state.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s Convention Highlights<\/p>\n<p>During\u200c his convention speech, Trump received multiple standing ovations for his \u2064controversial stances, including\u2064 opposition to transgender children, support for shooting looters, a promise to ban vaccine mandates, and his unwavering support \u2064of Second Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and DeSantis at the GOP Convention<\/p>\n<p>Both Trump and DeSantis are among the\u2062 four candidates speaking at the GOP convention.
