In comparison, the first debate drew an estimated 2.8 million viewers from that age group.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Fox News said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/press.foxnews.com\/2023\/09\/fox-news-medias-second-republican-primary-debate-tops-all-of-television-on-wednesday-september-27th\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> that the second primary debate drew more viewers than any other programs on the broadcast and cable news networks during primetime hours on Wednesday.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Unlike the first event, which featured eight GOP contestants, only seven presidential hopefuls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/7-gop-candidates-gear-up-to-take-debate-stage-as-trump-holds-rally-in-detroit-5498800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took the stage for the second primary debate:<\/a> Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\"><!--$--><\/p>\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--\/$--><\/div>\n<p>President Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination in polls, hasn&#8217;t shown up on the debate stage alongside his rivals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">The former president skipped the first primary debate. Instead, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-tucker-interview-reaches-nearly-200-million-views-5480019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-recorded an interview<\/a> with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that went viral on the social media platform X, right before the Aug. 24 debate started. The interview obtained nearly 200 million views. On Sept. 27, President Trump traveled to Detroit and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-tells-detroit-autoworkers-that-bidens-ev-mandates-will-send-their-jobs-to-china-5499627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> spoke to the blue-collar automakers<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">In comparison, when the former president appeared at the Republican primary debate for the first time in August 2015, nearly 24 million people tuned into Fox News to watch the event. The rating of his second primary debate, hosted by CNN, declined slightly but attracted almost <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2015\/09\/17\/media\/cnn-republican-debate-ratings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">23 million<\/a> viewers.  <\/p>\n<h2>Debates Without Trump<\/h2>\n<p>  Mr. Christie and Mr. DeSantis called out President Trump for not attending the debate on Wednesday night.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe should be on this stage tonight,\u201d Mr. DeSantis said. \u201cHe owes it to you to defend his record where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt. That set the stage for the inflation we have now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where\u2019s Joe Biden? He\u2019s completely missing in action from leadership. And you know who else is missing in action? His campaign&#8217;s spokesperson has confirmed to The Epoch Times that the former president will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-will-not-attend-any-future-gop-presidential-debates-campaign-confirms-5500076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skip all future debates<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;He said he&#8217;s not going to attend the debates, plural. And that&#8217;s his position\u2014until it&#8217;s not,&#8221; Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to President Trump\u2019s 2024 campaign, told reporters following Wednesday&#8217;s debate, adding that such events had become more like a contest for &#8220;who\u2019s going to be the designated survivor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Despite skipping the first two debates, as well as facing mounting legal challenges, President Trump continues his lead over the GOP primary field by over 40 percent, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2024\/president\/us\/2024_republican_presidential_nomination-7548.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RealClearPolitics aggregate<\/a> of polls.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">President Trump has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/110924112193729328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited<\/a> his dominant\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/after-booking-mugshot-trump-top-choice-for-most-republican-voters-poll-5485427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing lead<\/a>\u2014in polls as part of the reason for skipping the debate.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">According to a recent Wall Street Journal poll (<a href=\"https:\/\/s.wsj.net\/public\/resources\/documents\/WSJ_GOP_Primary_Poll_Aug_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>), nearly 6 out of 10 (59 percent) national Republican primary voters say the former president is their first choice, followed by 13 percent who would pick Mr. DeSantis.<\/div>\n<p>The survey was conducted on Aug. 24\u201330, beginning on the day when President Trump surrendered himself to authorities at the Fulton County jail on charges related to his alleged efforts to dispute Georgia&#8217;s 2020 election results.
