Media Outlets Misrepresent GOP Impeachment Witness Testimony<\/h2>\n
Multiple media outlets<\/a>\u2063 ran with\u200b one comment from George Washington University\u200b law professor Jonathan Turley<\/a> \u2014 treating it like a \u201cbombshell\u201d revelation and using it to suggest that the Republican-led impeachment inquiry \u2062into President Joe Biden was unfounded \u200c\u2014 but they left out one important part of his assessment.<\/p>\n
Turley, who\u200d has served as an expert witness in prior impeachments, did so again\u200b as House Republicans led by Rep. James Comer\u200b (R-KY) opened their impeachment inquiry \u200con Thursday \u2014 and media outlets ran<\/a> with one line from his prepared \u2064statement<\/a>: \u201cI do not believe that the evidence currently meets the standard of a high crime and misdemeanor needed for an article of impeachment.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

And while Turley did say that he did not believe the threshold had been met for an article of impeachment \u200d\u2014\u200d and said that he would\u2064 vote no if presented with one based on the evidence presented thus far\u2062 \u2014 that was far from all that Turley\u200b said (emphasis added to show the \u2062small\u200c part of Turley\u2019s statement that was highlighted by media outlets).<\/p>\n

It \u2063is important to emphasize what this hearing is not. It is not a \u2063hearing on articles of impeachment. The House has launched an\u200b impeachment\u2064 inquiry, and I am appearing to discuss \u200bthe history and purpose of such\u2063 inquiries. I have previously stated \u200dthat, while I believe that an impeachment inquiry is warranted, I do \u200dnot believe that the evidence currently meets \u200cthe\u2064 standard of a high crime \u2063and \u2063misdemeanor needed for an article of impeachment.<\/strong><\/em> The purpose of my testimony today is\u2063 to discuss how past \u200binquiries pursued evidence of potentially impeachable conduct.<\/p>\n
My testimony also reflects the fact that I do believe that, after months of investigation, the House has passed the threshold for an \u2062inquiry into whether President Joe Biden was directly\u2063 involved or benefited from the corrupt practices of his son, Hunter, and others. Since my testimony\u200b focuses\u200b on the historical \u2063and legal aspects of this inquiry, I will leave much of the\u200c discussion of the evidence to my fellow witnesses\u200c and to\u2063 the Committee members themselves. However, I believe that the \u200drecord \u200chas developed to the point that the House needs to answer troubling\u200d questions surrounding the President. As discussed below, polls indicate that most of the country shares those concerns while expressing doubts over \u2062the Biden Administration investigating potential \u200ccriminal conduct.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
And while most of the outlets covering<\/a> the impeachment hearing did include Turley\u2019s full remarks in the copy, their headlines left context\u200d to the imagination.<\/p>\n
Turley went on to outline the key points that he said pointed directly to the need for \u2062further scrutiny \u200bin the form \u200cof an impeachment \u2064hearing.<\/p>\n
\u201cTurley said, in [the] same breath, \u2018I\u200d also believe\u2063 the House has passed\u200c the threshold for an impeachment inquiry.\u2019 He cited \u2018three inescapable facts\u2019: i) Speaking \u2018falsely\u2019 about business dealings; ii) Biden was \u2018focus\u2019 of influence scheme; iii)\u2019Biden\u200b may have benefited\u2019 from scheme,\u201d\u200b RealClearNews White House reporter Philip Wegmann said.<\/p>\n
