During that check-in earlier this month, Uwe, his wife Hannelore, and their five oldest children were told to prepare\u200c to\u2062 self-deport, and \u200dreturn in four weeks with \u2064their German \u200bpassports. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis came as a surprise. We did not\u200c expect anything like this,\u201d Uwe said, adding that the feds have \u200dnot given them any explanation \u200dfor the sudden move\u2063 to\u2064 deport \u2062him and\u200b his family. But Uwe, a piano accompanist at Carson-Newman\u2062 University, said he is trusting God with what happens next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2062 still trust God to\u200c make a way for us to stay here. I know it\u2019s kind of impossible, but that\u2019s where we know God can still do the impossible,\u201d Uwe \u200dsaid, \u200badding that if \u200dthey are forced to go back to Germany, they will face the same type of persecution they fled as they continue to homeschool their two\u2064 youngest children, such as being fined\u2063 around $300 a day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Change of Orders and Uncertainty<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The attorney representing the Romeikes, Kevin Boden of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hslda.org\/post\/romeike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Home School Legal Defense Association<\/a>, told The Daily Wire that it appears Immigration\u2062 and Customs Enforcement (ICE) received new orders on handling the Romeikes, but said it\u2019s \u200bunclear where the \u201cchange of\u2063 orders\u201d came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s \u200ctough to know \u2014 is it a new official who came into ICE\u2064 and is looking at this? Is it the Biden administration? Is it just the individual ICE officer who doesn\u2019t understand this \u200bor was there some superior\u2063 in the\u200c bureaucratic process somewhere who just decided they \u2064wanted to affect the deportation? I don\u2019t know,\u201d Boden said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to speculate, but there appears to be \u2063some change of orders at\u200d some point in the chain there.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Fleeing Persecution and Fighting for Homeschooling<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeike and\u2063 his wife moved their five children at the time to the United States after facing fines from \u200cthe German government for pulling their \u200dchildren out of \u2063the public school system. Homeschooling is rarely permitted in \u2064Germany and only for medical reasons. When the Romeikes began homeschooling in 2006, the German government levied fines that amounted to around\u200b $9,000 and threatened to remove \u2062the Romeike children from the care of \u2063their \u200cparents, WBIR <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbir.com\/article\/news\/local\/morristown-family-faces-deportation-homeschooling\/51-2d3dd498-b8b0-4b4e-86af-e8c33dae0dbb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The couple, who had two more children after\u2064 moving to the United States, were granted permission by \u200can immigration\u2062 judge to live in the country. After the\u2064 Obama administration\u2019s Department\u2063 of Justice fought the decision, t<\/span>he family took the fight to the courts, which ultimately ruled against them\u2062 in 2013, arguing that the Romeikes\u200b did not prove that they\u2063 faced persecution in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the appeals court judge ruled \u200cagainst the Romeikes\u2019\u200d asylum claims, the family\u2062 was allowed to remain\u200d in the United States indefinitely, and they checked in \u2062annually with an\u200c immigration agent. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Deportation \u2063Amidst Record-Breaking Immigration Numbers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Romeikes were told to prepare for deportation as the\u200d Biden administration\u2063 continues to oversee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/daily-border-numbers-near-all-time-high\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">record-breaking numbers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border into the United States. Many of the migrants who enter the country illegally\u2063 are housed near the border or bused to cities\u200d throughout \u2064the United States, where\u2064 they are fed and given rooms\u2062 at the\u200d expense of the \u2063taxpayer while\u200d they await an immigration hearing. An ICE agent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/01\/27\/migrants-with-criminal-records-among-those-being-released-in-the-us-ice-agent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  \u2064 Fox News \u2063last year that some \u200cof the illegal immigrants being released into the country have criminal records for misdemeanors such as assault, drunken\u2064 driving, and drug possession. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When \u200casked about the sudden decision to deport the\u2064 Romeike family, an \u200dICE \u200dspokesperson told The Daily Wire that each case is appropriately reviewed by the Executive\u200d Office for Immigration Review.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Fighting \u2062to Stay in America<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The father of seven also said his children who have already received their high school diplomas in the United States \u2063would be forced\u200d to\u200b undergo schooling again in Germany since the country wouldn\u2019t recognize\u200c their homeschool\u2063 education, but he remains resolute in keeping his children out of the public school system.
