The \u200dgoal was to help reduce gun violence in \u2062Phoenix, but\u200b unfortunately, current \u2063state law\u2063 prevented them\u200d from taking \u200daction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I continue to be extremely, extremely disappointed that current state law prevents us from making our own decision,&#8221; \u2062expressed \u2062council\u2062 vice-chairwoman Yassamin Ansari. Despite their frustration, the council voted 8-0 to repeal the June 28\u2062 ordinance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gun\u200c violence\u200c is \u2064the \u200dleading cause of death among children in the United States. However, council members argued that\u200d the ordinance only allowed donating\u2062 599 guns to the Ukrainian national police to\u200c express solidarity, similar\u2064 to former Gov. Doug Ducey donating body armor and other protective gear to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<h2>Illegal Ordinance<\/h2>\n<p>    \u2064   \u2063On Aug. 21, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Quang Nguyen and vice-chairman Selina Bliss, both Republicans, filed \u200ca complaint with \u200bthe state attorney general&#8217;s office\u2064 claiming \u200cthe ordinance was illegal and required an investigation.\n  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a joint letter to the attorney general, both legislators said it was\u200b &#8220;frustrating&#8221; that Phoenix Mayor \u2064Kate Gallego, a \u2063Democrat, \u200d&#8221;willfully disregarded state law and \u2064rushed\u2064 the\u2063 transfer of these firearms abroad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arizona Attorney General\u200c Kris \u2062Mayes explained in a 12-page written decision on Sept. 20 \u2063that the\u200b council&#8217;s vote creating the ordinance violated\u200b state law governing the disposal\u2063 of unclaimed \u2064firearms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ms. \u2062Mayes, a Democrat, said her\u2062 decision was not a public \u2063rebuke of the spirit\u200c of the ordinance or &#8220;an \u200dendorsement of \u200dthe \u2064policy underlying Arizona&#8217;s firearms disposition statutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nor should it discourage future support and donations \u2064to Ukraine or elsewhere that can be carried out in compliance with Arizona law,&#8221;\u2064 Ms. Mayes wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The law allows\u2063 Arizona municipalities to resell \u2064unclaimed firearms to licensed dealers after 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Reselling guns does not keep us safe,&#8221; emphasized Ms. Ansari, while another council member stated, \u2063&#8221;Guns \u2063provoke violence, and we&#8217;ve\u2064 got to find a way to \u2062deal with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In passing\u2063 the ordinance,\u2062 the council \u2063agreed to dispose of \u2063the firearms through \u2062a signed contract with freight forwarder and U.S. \u2063customs broker D.T. You have no idea who you&#8217;re giving it to,&#8221; Mr. Nguyen expressed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t like the law, get a \u2064legislator to change it.
