I might have \u200da \u200cLego Porsche 911 hidden in\u200b my\u200d office, but let&#8217;s keep that between \u2062us.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The habit is a bit of a guilty \u200dpleasure for conservatives, however, since Lego \u200btends to be \u2014 as so many European-based corporations in general\u200c do, and Scandinavian-based ones in \u2063particular \u2014 \u2064thoroughly bewoked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, when business and progressivism collide, what \u200btends to get\u200d produced is an object\u2062 lesson \u2064in reality.\u2063 And so be it in the case \u200dof Lego, which \u2014 \u200cas you may have \u2062noticed \u2014 is \u200cmade out of plastic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/coca-cola-introduces-smaller-bottles-help-fight-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plastic<\/a>,\u200c as you\u2062 may have heard, is <strong>Very Bad<\/strong>. That\u2019s why drinking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/researchers-looked-closely-eco-friendly-paper-straws-made-disturbing-discovery-dont-put-drink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">straws now fall apart<\/a> before the job\u2064 is done.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s a problem for\u2064 the Denmark-based plastic brick conglomerate: The bricks are made out of plastic, plastic requires oil, and oil is one of the Very Bad parts of plastic that needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMost Lego pieces are\u2062 currently made \u2062from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/retail\/legos-latest-effort-to-avoid-oil-based-plastic-hits-brick-wall-8046af66?mod=e2tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> noted on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company\u200d has also been using a bioplastic \u200bmade from\u2064 sugar \u2062cane for several years\u200c to produce smaller, softer pieces such as trees, \u200dbranches, leaves \u2063and accessories for its \u2063minifigures. \u200cThis bioplastic, known as bio-PE, isn\u2019t currently suitable for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/graphic-pictures-video-hamas-terrorist-opens-fire-in-jerusalem-killing-one-injuring-four\/\" title=\"Graphic Pictures\/Video: Hamas Terrorist Opens Fire in Jerusalem, Killing One, Injuring Four\">making harder<\/a>,\u200c stronger elements such as its bricks though.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So Lego\u2064 tried making its bricks from corn, according \u2063to the Journal.\u200c Those were too \u200csoft. It tried wheat. Those bricks didn\u2019t look right.<\/p>\n<p>Other materials made the bricks too \u2063hard to pull apart.\u200c Still other materials lost their grip over time.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Lego \u200dthought it had\u2062 hit upon the magic bullet\u200c \u2014 or brick, as \u2064it were: one made\u2063 out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-european-officials-agree-on-ban-of-some-single-use-plastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recycled\u200b plastic \u200bbottles<\/a> made of polyethylene terephthalate (that\u2019s \u201cPET\u201d to the cognoscenti).<\/p>\n<p>What could possibly go wrong? It\u2019s <em>recycled, \u200b <\/em>right? The oil has already \u200cbeen put into \u2063it. How could \u200csomething that sounds so \u2063wonderful turn out not to be?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal: \u201cLego is \u2063scrapping\u200c plans to make its toy bricks from recycled plastic bottles after determining \u200bthat switching \u200bto the material would result in \u200bit\u200c producing higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-goes-full-green-new-deal-tyrant-carbon-emissions-threaten-the-very-existence-of-our-planet-video\/\" title=\"Biden Goes Full Green New Deal Tyrant: Carbon Emissions Threaten \u201cthe Very Existence of our Planet\u201d (VIDEO)\">carbon emissions<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh. Well, I suppose that\u2019s \u2063 <em>one<\/em> way, yes.<\/p>\n<p>See, as it turns \u2063out, after \u200cannouncing what the Journal described as\u2063 \u201ca\u2062 high-profile effort launched just over two years ago\u201d \u200bto \u2064make the company\u2019s bricks out \u200bof recycled PET, someone \u2062decided \u200cto 1) finally \u200drun some numbers on whether this \u200dwas actually \u201csustainable,\u201d or (more likely) 2) someone decided to finally run some <em>realistic<\/em> numbers, as opposed to best-case \u200bscenarios, \u2063on the sustainability of recycled PET bricks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2062company found a one-liter plastic PET bottle could produce around 10 of its \u2062classic 2\u00d74-stud bricks. The company has been testing bricks made from the material for their quality, durability and \u2018clutch power\u2019\u00a0 \u2014 the name\u200d Lego gives to the brick\u2019s ability\u2064 to lock together with\u200d other bricks,\u201d the outlet \u2063reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLego said \u2062it is abandoning the effort because it\u2063 found that scaling up production\u2063 wouldn\u2019t cut\u200d the company\u2019s carbon emissions: The extra steps\u2062 involved\u200b in production would \u2062use more energy and manufacturing\u2064 facilities would require \u200bretooling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t worry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-the-lego-movie-2-opens-no-1-but-everything-is-not-awesome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lego<\/a> insists. Failures will \u2064continue until morale improves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/our-prayers-are-with-rush-limbaughs-producer-issues-statement-amid-radio-hosts-absence\/\" title=\"\u2018Our Prayers Are With Rush\u2019: Limbaugh\u2019s Producer Issues Statement Amid Radio Host\u2019s Absence\">remain fully committed<\/a> to \u200dmaking Lego bricks from sustainable\u2063 materials by 2032,\u201d\u2063 said a Lego representative, according to\u2062 the\u200c Journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecycled PET is one of hundreds of different sustainable materials we\u2019ve tested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Edison reportedly once said, \u201cI have\u2062 not failed. I\u2019ve just\u200b found 10,000 ways that won\u2019t work.\u201d Which \u2063sounds a bit like Lego\u2019s conundrum. Except for the fact that it\u200c had long \u200bsucceeded in its primary mission of\u200b making successful toys. Then \u200bit decided that was actually a failure, and is working on finding 10,000 ways to make it worse \u2014 \u200dincluding a recycled plastic brick that actually <em>increased<\/em> carbon emissions in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>Only in our\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/green-fail-dozens-windmills-bailed-diesel-generators-look-sprayed-countryside\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brave new green \u2062world<\/a>. Oops.<\/p>\n<p>And thus, Lego has given up\u200b on its latest effort to go \u201cgreen.\u201d Back to conventional plastic it is.<\/p>\n<p>Now, \u2063don\u2019t \u200cget me wrong. I\u2019m not here \u2062to bash Lego \u2042for this decision.
