To respond, they did an interview with the author \u2014 Maia Kobabe, who identifies as nonbinary. Her response to the whole \u200dkerfuffle? Well, c\u2019mon, it\u2019s not like the book is for <em>kids<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Oh.<\/p>\n<p>If you missed Sen. Kennedy\u2019s reading, trust\u200b us when we say that, unless you were genuinely unaware of the depths of \u2063depravity\u200c to which \u201cGender Queer\u201d sinks to, trust me, you really <em>don\u2019t\u200b <\/em>need to see it. That being \u200dsaid, it <em>is<\/em> part of the story, after all \u2014 and this book might be available to \u2063your son\u2064 or daughter without your knowledge,\u200d so here we go. A reminder that if you\u2019re eating \u2014 stop. Really. Trust me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>WARNING: The following video contains \u200dextremely\u2063 graphic language that \u200dsome viewers will find offensive.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BRIEF COMMENT<br \/>\nSen. \u2064John Kennedy (R-LA) read excerpts from Maia Kobabe\u2019s \u201cGender Queer\u201d \u200din a manner that gave me the same laughs as when a pornographic\u2064 book\u200b was read\u200b by Richard Griffiths in \u2064\u201cThe Naked Gun 2\u00bd\u201d\u200d . . . only \u200dthese laughs\u200d are \u2064far less intentional.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6LdwspbNze\">pic.twitter.com\/6LdwspbNze<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jesse Coffey#WGAStrong #SAGAFTRAStrong (@JesseCoffey15) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JesseCoffey15\/status\/1701709693494894803?\">September 12, \u200d2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, the Post, the Beltway\u2019s paper of \u200drecord despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/libs-tiktok-doxer-gets-keep-job-new-conditions-made-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous self-inflicted attempts<\/a> to disabuse the capital\u2019s residents of that notion, reached out \u2064to Kobabe for an \u2063interview about the kerfuffle.<\/p>\n<h3>Author&#8217;s Perspective<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cEarlier this week, regular\u200d viewers of C-SPAN stumbled \u2063onto a truly singular\u200d moment\u2062 of\u2063 politics and television when John Neely Kennedy, the conservative 71-year-old senator from Louisiana, began to read aloud\u200d what sure sounded like it could be the beginning of a porn\u2062 scene,\u201d began the \u201cperspective\u201d piece by columnist Monica Hesse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe topic of the hearing was\u2062 a new Illinois anti-book ban law, and Kennedy\u2019s excerpt was from \u2018Gender Queer: A Memoir,\u2019 a coming-of-age comic\u200c book by Maia Kobabe that was published in 2019 and became the most challenged book of 2021 and 2022, according to the American Library \u2063Association.\u2062 Kennedy\u2019s argument: that librarians alone shouldn\u2019t get\u2062 to \u2018decide whether the\u200b two books that I just \u200breferenced should be available to kids.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, the Post began\u2062 by \u200basking if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/satanism-display-local-library-inappropriate-sexual-books-placed-next-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kobabe<\/a> had seen Kennedy\u2019s dramatic reading of her\u2063 work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have seen the clip. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senator-reads-filthy-gender-queer-book-found-in-schools-author-confirms-it-was-never-meant-for-children\/\" title=\"Senator discovers inappropriate 'Gender Queer' book in schools; author clarifies it was not intended for children.\">trans-activist friend texted<\/a> it to me with a very \u2018Congratulations and also I\u2019m sorry\u2019 attitude,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main thing was it was very clear that the senator picked the one \u2063page out of a 240-page book that \u200bhe thought would be the most shocking. And it\u2019s interesting \u200che\u200b chose to read the words <em>without<\/em> showing the images. [Emphasis theirs] Because the images on that page\u200c are not salacious at all \u2014 it\u2019s an illustration of me sitting at my job, which\u2063 was in a library, reading text messages \u2063from someone I was dating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, there \u2062are no illustrations whatsoever in \u201c50 Shades of Grey\u201d \u2014 so we can put that in the preschool library, right?<\/p>\n<p>Not \u2062exactly \u2014 since, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-establishment-media-reveals-rotten-core-failed-attack-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kobabe<\/a> \u200cnoted in response to \u200ca\u200c question about opponents \u201cmak[ing] it sound like it\u2019s marketed to\u200b 6-year-olds,\u201d it\u2019s not really\u200b supposed to be read by, you know,\u2062 kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt keeps\u200c being called a children\u2019s book. Senator Kennedy implied it was \u200ca children\u2019s book,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think\u200c that\u2019s coming from a misreading of the comic-book form. \u2018Gender Queer\u2019 is a comic, and \u200cin full \u200bcolor, but that doesn\u2019t \u200cmean it\u2019s for children. I originally \u2062wrote it for \u200dmy parents, and then\u2063 for older teens \u200dwho were already asking these questions about themselves. I don\u2019t recommend this book for kids!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for saving \u200dus the time, I \u2064suppose.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I wonder how \u200cgenuinely stupid and\/or insulated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-fl-state-senator-voted-censor-conservatives-censoring-explicit-school-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kobabe<\/a> believes\u200c conservatives to be,\u2062 or at least cynically believes the Post\u2019s readership believes\u2063 them to be. I know of no conservative \u200bwho\u2064 is\u2064 lighting the torches and sharpening the pitchforks because \u201cGender Queer\u201d is a \u200cgraphic\u2064 novel and they labor under the misapprehension all graphic novels are\u2062 of\u200d the 1960s Batman \u201cBIFF!\u2064 POW! ZOWIEE!\u201d comic book variety.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, it\u2019s because\u2062 1)\u200d the book is pornographic indoctrination and 2) it\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/lgbt-activist-organization-flooding-schools-cash-create-sexuality-clubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public \u200dschool \u2063libraries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also,\u2063 Kobabe tried out another hoary line used while defending \u201cGender Queer\u201d: \u200dI \u200bmean, <em>most<\/em> of it is innocuous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, could he just read some other passages from my book?\u201d she asked at the \u2062conclusion of the interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a whole passage where I talk about \u2062my asexual identity, and realizing that dating and sex might be something I don\u2019t care about at all. There are parts where \u200dI wrestle with \u2064whether to come out and share \u200cnonbinary pronouns as a teacher in\u200b a\u2064 classroom and whether or not that\u2019s too political.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere \u200dare \u2062other sections\u200b about connecting with friends \u2064and\u2062 being\u200b met with love and support. He could read any of those other passages out loud. Literally any.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OK. So let\u2019s say \u2014 \u2064hypothetically \u2014 that my local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/student-11-confronts-school-board-reading-pornographic-book-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle school\u2019s library<\/a> allows middle school students to rent \u201cReservoir Dogs.\u201d Aghast, I show up at the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/maryland-school-district-announces-policy-to-push-anti-racist-thinking-in-preschool-redefine-discrimination-and-racism\/\" title=\"Maryland School District Announces Policy to Push \u2018Anti-Racist Thinking\u2019 In Preschool, Redefine \u2018Discrimination\u2019 and \u2018Racism\u2019\">school board meeting<\/a> and play the scene where one \u200dof the characters tortures a police officer tied to a chair and cuts \u2064off his ear while \u201cStuck in the Middle With You\u201d plays in the \u2062background.<\/p>\n<p>In their defense, the librarians\u200b bring in Quentin Tarantino. \u201cI mean, couldn\u2019t you have shown some other \u2064scenes from the movie? Like the one at the \u2062beginning, where Mr. Pink says he doesn\u2019t \u2063believe in tipping because society says he has\u200b to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, granted, the\u200b oeuvre of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/quentin-tarantinos-final-film-will-get-made-thanks-help-millions-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Tarantino<\/a> is usually peppered with a bit too many utterances of certain, ahem, words that\u200c begin with F, S\u2062 and N to make that \u2063argument an exact \u2062apples-to-apples comparison, but the point is this: That \u201cStuck in the Middle With You\u201d scene could have been\u200d put in the middle of \u201cMary Poppins\u201d and it should still exempt that film from being accessed via a public school library.<\/p>\n<p>Also, keep in mind that,\u2063 if you\u2019re \u2063a parent who\u2062 believes \u2064your child should be able\u2064 to read \u201cGender Queer,\u201d you can let them get it from\u200c a <em>regular<\/em> library \u2014 or buy it from a bookstore! In fact, this is exactly what my dad did with\u2062 \u201cReservoir\u200c Dogs\u201d after I\u200b asked to see it when\u2063 I was 13 and there was buzz around it: He rented it from\u2063 the video store for\u200b me. You know, the \u2064video store that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aclu-demands-biden-admin-force-pa-school-district-to-allow-socially-transition-of-students-without-parental-approval\/\" title=\"ACLU Demands Biden Admin Force PA School District to Allow \"Socially Transition\" of Students Without Parental Approval\">requires parental permission<\/a> for movies rated R. (Now, of course, that\u2019s done via parental controls on streaming services, but the idea is the same.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, you\u2062 could make the argument \u200dthat\u200d a book\u2063 like \u201cGender Queer\u201d \u2014 which features dialogue like the \u201cI got a new strap-on harness\u200c today \u2026 I can\u2019t wait to put it on you. It will fit my favorite\u2062 d***o perfectly\u201d \u2014 is so pornographic that shouldn\u2019t be allowed. But that \u2063argument isn\u2019t the one being \u200cmade, even though the word\u2064 \u201cbanned\u201d is\u2062 bandied about throughout the Post\u2019s interview. \u201cGender Queer\u201d isn\u2019t\u2063 being \u201cbanned\u201d by anyone. It\u2019s being taken out of school libraries, where it doesn\u2019t \u200dbelong \u2014 the same way a number of other titles don\u2019t \u2063belong there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Psycho.\u201d \u201cGravity\u2019s Rainbow.\u201d \u201cFear &#038; Loathing in Las Vegas.\u201d \u2064These are all literary masterpieces. They also \u2014 almost everyone would agree \u2014 don\u2019t belong in middle school (or high \u200cschool, for that matter) libraries.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that\u200d they\u2019re being banned, it\u2019s just that they aren\u2019t children\u2019s books. The same way the author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/schools-reinstate-pornographic-books-name-diversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gender Queer<\/a>\u201d admits \u2063her book isn\u2019t, either.
