However, it is precisely\u200d because Scruton was a Cold Warrior who engaged in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russian-security-tried-to-push-u-s-reporters-out-of-biden-putin-summit-reports\/\" title=\"Russian Security Tried To Push U.S. Reporters Out Of Biden-Putin Summit: Reports\">tete-a-tete<\/a> with the earlier generations\u200c of Old Left\u200d and New Left intellectuals that the conservative gadfly \u200dcould make\u2064 such a statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>A Shift in Leftist Ideals<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Scruton\u2019s puckish comment seems to belie an inconvenient truth: Marxism as a philosophy is (deadly) wrong, but throughout the twentieth century, many well-meaning and intelligent people embraced some form of \u2063Marxism out of altruistic motives, hoping \u200bto improve the lot of the poor and\u2063 working class around\u200c the world.<\/li>\n<li>As shocking as it may \u200bseem, there\u2063 was a time when \u200cthe left cared about the working class of their\u2063 own countries. There also once was a \u200btime \u2062(as \u200brecent as\u2062 the anti-WTO protests of \u2064the \u2062\u201900s) in which\u2062 the \u2064left opposed \u200bglobalism, which they saw as a tool \u200bfor eradicating cultures across the world and creating \u200ban\u200b environment in\u200d which wages could be driven down by immigration and global corporate expansion. There was further a time in which the left \u2064argued for free speech and open intellectual\u200b inquiry \u200bas well as high intellectual standards in K-12, college, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/education-student-reinstated-following-suspension-for-saying-a-man-is-a-man-a-woman-is-a-woman\/\" title=\"Education Student Reinstated Following Suspension For Saying, \u2018A Man Is A Man, A Woman Is A Woman\u2019\">university education<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the era of \u201cwoke capitalism\u201d \u2063and \u201cmillennial leftism,\u201d however, these sentiments have been eclipsed by a radical egalitarianism and anti-intellectualism that is focused on racial \u200band gender issues as opposed to economic\u2062 ones. Indeed, it has\u2064 been argued that the left is\u2064 now as divided as the\u200d right between older liberals who advocate for some democratic\u200c socialism within a color-blind and diverse\u2062 society, and those on the\u2064 left who advocate for tearing down the\u2062 West and creating a neo-feudal, oligarchical tyranny. \u200bThe older\u2062 generation \u2064of liberals is (usually) grayer and wiser\u200c than the new generation \u2064of \u200cwoke millennials.<\/p>\n<h3>A \u200dHistorical\u200c Perspective<\/h3>\n<p>In his\u200c recent\u200c work, <em>America before 1787: The Unraveling of a Colonial Regime<\/em>, Columbia University social science professor Jon Elster, a self-described (old school) Marxist, provides a look into the \u2062causes of\u2063 the American Revolution, a \u2063revolution,\u200b in Elster\u2019s view, that helped frame the vision of Americans\u2064 as scrappy \u201ccolonials.\u201d <em>America\u200b before \u200c1787<\/em> is the second of\u200d a proposed three-volume work by \u2063Elster, detailing the American and \u200bFrench Revolutions\u200b and the eventual creation of the American and French constitutions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>America before 1787<\/em> is, in many ways, the \u200dwell-crafted effort of a seasoned social scientist who\u2064 has engaged in a \u2063lifetime of research and\u2063 work. The work simultaneously explores the\u2063 history of the \u200dfirst American colonies. As such \u2064it is\u200d both a look into\u2063 the \u200dpast as well as a reminder that many of the problems with which\u2062 Americans have struggled in the 21st century are by no means new.<\/li>\n<li>Elster sees the French and Indian War (1756-1763) \u200cas\u2063 a catalyst for American independence. After\u2063 the \u200bwar, British\u200d policy in America became increasingly harsh.\u2062 Moreover, the French \u2014 smarting from their \u200dloss \u2014 were motivated to help the Americans fight and ultimately defeat \u2063the British. The French and Indian War also gave the British\u200c the false impression \u2064that\u2064 Americans were incompetent mercenaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One \u2063of the most interesting\u2064 elements of \u2064 <em>America before 1787<\/em> is Elster\u2019s depiction\u200b of the social dynamics of \u200bthe Americans and\u2064 British\u200b leading up to the war, especially how the British saw \u200bthe Americans. The general \u2064view of the Americans by many among the British, especially British military men, was of\u2064 rebellious and rough-hewed \u200brednecks who needed to be brought back\u2064 into line. The Americans did \u200cnot necessarily always give the British cause to think otherwise.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Colonials regularly used\u2062 rioting and destruction \u2063to persuade the British. Elster notes that rioters in Boston\u200c destroyed the home of Andrew Oliver, \u200dthe secretary \u200dof the Massachusetts colony, in \u2064order to encourage the \u2064repeal of the Stamp Act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, Elster\u2063 importantly\u2063 emphasizes that, while the Founding Fathers \u2062are\u200b often popularly \u2062perceived\u2064 as representatives of Enlightenment rationalism, they recognized \u200bthe importance\u2064 of \u200cemotion \u200band irrationality in human behavior. Elster quotes Samuel Adams \u200bas writing in April of 1776, \u201cmankind are governed more by\u2062 their feelings than by reason. Events which excite \u2063those feelings \u2062will produce wonderful Effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Elster \u200cdoes not depict rampaging colonials led\u2062 by Machiavellian \u200cstrategists. Americans, like the British, held to a code of honor, \u2062which varied colony by \u200bcolony. The Puritan New Englanders (of course) valued \u2062studiousness,\u2064 humility,\u2062 and\u200c patience, while \u2062the Virginians\u2062 (also, of course) valued physical courage and strength of will.<\/p>\n<p>Elster humorously (and accurately) links the familial code of honor\u2062 in \u2063Appalachia with that of Southern Italy. This exploration of the \u2064character of colonial America and its implicit continuity to the present day is another fascinating quality of <em>America before 1787<\/em>. The British themselves, \u200bespecially British officers, were also animated by a formal\u200b military honor in their attempt to stop the Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Another key element within <em>America before 1787<\/em> is \u2064Elster\u2019s emphasis on the \u2064legitimacy of many Americans\u2019\u200d grievances. A dismissive \u2064left-wing \u200bexpression \u200cgoes something like \u201cThe American\u200b Revolution was\u200b just a \u200bbunch of white men who didn\u2019t want to pay taxes.\u201d However, Elster provides ample evidence of \u2062British mistreatment of Americans before and \u200dduring the Revolution\u2064 \u2014 without, thankfully, falling into the all too \u200dcommon Anglophobia\u2064 of some\u200d scholars as well as purveyors of pop \u200bculture.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Elster notes the burden of ethnic \u200cconflict has weighed \u200bon America since its inception. Some American colonists were worried about slaves collaborating with the Indians or the Irish in an uprising.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, as is oft forgotten in the area inundated with depictions of \u2064the Plains Indians\u200d Wars, the frontier of America was once on the Eastern Seaboard,\u2064 and the progress of the United States across the North American continent was marked by\u200b a grueling combat against fierce\u200d warrior peoples who (unlike Westerners today) fought to preserve their way of life and lands.<\/p>\n<p>To argue that\u200d old-school Marxists\u2062 are \u200bsaner than \u200dthe contemporary millennial\u200b left is not to argue\u2063 in support of Marxism. Rather, it is noted the general decline of intellectual \u200cdiscourse in the United States, which itself\u2064 is a sign\u2063 of broader cultural and civilization decline.<\/p>\n<p>As Elster rightfully notes \u2062in <em>America before 1787<\/em>, the United States was born in an act of \u200crebellion \u200bby a rag-tag bunch of \u201ccolonials\u201d from their mother country. However, these colonials, after receiving waves of (often \u200bthemselves rag-tag) immigrants from Europe, were able to \u200dbuild the most prosperous \u2064and powerful nation\u2062 that the world has ever seen. This\u2064 nation was built by\u2062 strong \u200band good men and\u200b women, and these\u200b strong\u2063 and good men and women are needed now\u200c for our country \u2014 and not merely once upon a \u200ctime.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How has Marxism&#8217;s impact on societies around\u2064 the world shaped contemporary\u200b culture and politics?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  And maintain British control \u2062over the American colonies.<\/p>\n<h3>The Relevance of Marxism Today<\/h3>\n<p>So, what does this historical \u2063perspective have to do with the enduring legacy of Marxism? Well, \u200bit serves as a reminder that the ideas and philosophies of the past can still shape our present and future. Marxism,\u2063 despite its flaws and failures, has had a lasting impact on societies \u200baround the world.<\/p>\n<p>While the Soviet Union\u2062 and other \u200cMarxist states may have collapsed, the influence of Marxist\u200c ideologies can still be seen in various aspects of \u2063contemporary culture and politics.\u2063 Issues of class \u2063struggle, inequality, and\u200b social\u2064 justice \u200bcontinue to dominate political discourse and\u200b shape policies implemented by governments.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the emergence of identity politics and the rise of the so-called &#8220;woke&#8221; culture can also be seen as an evolution of Marxist thought.
