Residents and businesses in all counties of \u200dboth states now have until Feb. 15, 2024,\u2062 to file their \u200bfederal tax returns and make payments. This relief comes after a disaster declaration by FEMA for Maine and\u200c Massachusetts due to the destructive impact of Hurricane \u2063Lee.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/irs-grants-relief-to-taxpayers-in-georgia-affected-by-hurricane-idalia\/\" title=\"IRS provides relief to Georgia taxpayers impacted by Hurricane Idalia.\">tax relief measures postpone<\/a> various tax filing\u2064 and payment \u200bdeadlines \u200cthat occur between Sept. 15 and Feb. 15 next year.<\/p>\n<h2>Various Deadlines \u2063Extended<\/h2>\n<p>Those who were affected by Hurricane Lee\u2063 in Maine and Massachusetts who had a valid extension to file their 2022 returns (initially \u2062due to run out \u2063on Oct. \u200c16) will now\u200c have until Feb.\u2062 15, 2024,\u200c to file their \u200breturns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The tax relief measures \u2064extend deadlines for filing and payment of taxes between Sept. 15 and Feb. 15. Individuals in Maine and Massachusetts \u200baffected \u2063by Hurricane Lee, who had an extension to file their 2022 returns, now have until Feb. 15, 2024, to submit their\u200c returns.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This extension applies to filing only and not to\u2062 tax payments, as tax payments related \u200dto these 2022 returns were originally \u2064due on April 18 this year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Please note \u2064that this extension only applies to filing tax returns and not to tax payments. The original deadline for tax payments related to these 2022 returns was April \u200c18 of this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Quarterly estimated income tax payments normally due on Sept. 15, 2023, and Jan. 16, 2024, have been extended by the IRS&#8217;s action to Feb. 15, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Also, quarterly payroll and excise tax returns typically due on Oct. 31, 2023, and Jan. \u206231, 2024, have also been granted an extension, with the new deadline set for Feb. 15, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Several business entities will benefit from this relief, including calendar-year partnerships and S corporations whose 2022 extensions\u2064 ran out \u2064on Sept. 15, as well as calendar-year corporations whose 2022 extensions run out on Oct. 16. Additionally, calendar-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-house-republicans-call-for-answers-from-texas-elections-administrator-over-private-funding-for-elections\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: House Republicans Call For Answers From Texas Elections Administrator Over Private Funding For Elections\">tax-exempt organizations<\/a> whose extensions run \u200dout on Nov. 15, will also have until Feb. \u200d15, 2024, to file their returns.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The IRS has extended the deadlines for\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/irs-offers-tax-relief-to-hurricane-victims-in-several-states\/\" title=\"IRS provides tax relief to hurricane victims in multiple states.\">quarterly estimated income tax payments due<\/a> on Sept.\u2064 15, 2023, and Jan. 16, 2024, to Feb. 15, 2024. The deadlines for quarterly payroll and\u200b excise tax \u2063returns, originally set for Oct. 31, 2023, and Jan. 31, 2024, have also been extended to Feb. 15, 2024. Various business entities, including partnerships, S corporations, and tax-exempt organizations, will benefit from this relief.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Penalties for the failure to make payroll and excise tax \u200ddeposits\u2063 due on or after Sept. 15 and before Oct.\u200d 2 will be abated, provided the deposits \u2063are made by Oct. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Affected taxpayers located within the disaster area will receive automatic filing and penalty relief \u200dand are not required to contact the IRS separately.<\/p>\n<p>In unique circumstances where an affected taxpayer does not have an\u200d IRS\u2064 address of record located in the disaster area, they could receive late filing or late payment penalty notices from the IRS. In such cases, taxpayers should call the\u200d number on \u2064the notice to have \u200dthe penalty abated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If payroll and excise tax deposits due between Sept. 15 and Oct. 2 are not made on time, penalties will be waived if the deposits are made by Oct.\u200b 2. Taxpayers in the disaster area will receive automatic relief from filing and penalties and\u200d do not\u200b need to contact the IRS\u2063 separately. However, if an affected taxpayer does not have an IRS address in the disaster area, they may receive penalty notices. \u2064In \u200dsuch cases, they should call the number on the notice to have the penalty waived.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Taxpayers living outside the disaster area but who\u2062 have records\u200b necessary to meet a deadline during\u200c the postponement period located in the affected area are also eligible for\u2062 relief. Such individuals should contact the IRS directly for clarification regarding their filing circumstances, the tax agency\u200c said.<\/p>\n<h2>More Tax Relief Measures<\/h2>\n<p>The IRS also said in its Sept.\u2063 25 notice that individuals in federally declared disaster areas who suffered uninsured or unreimbursed disaster-related losses can choose to claim these losses on either the return for the\u200c year the loss occurred (2023), or the return for the prior year (2022).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Taxpayers residing outside \u200cthe disaster area but with records needed to meet a deadline during the postponement period in the affected\u200b area can also receive relief. \u200dThey\u2063 should contact the IRS directly for clarification on their filing situation. Additionally, individuals in federally declared disaster areas who experienced uninsured\u200c or unreimbursed losses can choose to claim these losses \u2062on either their 2023 or 2022 tax return.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In general, disaster relief payments are\u200b excluded\u2064 from gross income. This means that affected taxpayers can exclude \u2062from their gross \u2063income amounts received from a government agency for reasonable and necessary personal, family, living, or funeral expenses, as well as for the repair or rehabilitation of their home,\u2063 or for the repair or replacement of \u200cits contents.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Disaster relief payments are typically not included in \u2063gross\u200d income. This allows affected taxpayers to exclude amounts received\u200c from \u200da government agency for personal, family, living, or funeral expenses, as well \u200das for home repair or rehabilitation, or replacement of its contents.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Also, additional relief may be available to affected taxpayers who participate in retirement plans or individual retirement arrangements (IRAs). This includes special disaster distributions that are not subject\u200b to the additional 10 percent early distribution \u200dtax and the option \u2064to make hardship withdrawals. Specific\u200b rules and guidance for these options can be\u200d found in each plan or IRA.<\/p>\n<h2>IRS to Keep Operating Even If Government Shuts Down<\/h2>\n<p>Political deadlock on Capitol Hill around the appropriations process could lead to a government shutdown at the end \u2062of September.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Affected taxpayers who\u200b have retirement plans or\u2063 IRAs may be \u2063eligible for\u2062 additional relief, such as special disaster distributions without the 10 percent early distribution tax and the ability \u2064to make hardship withdrawals. Detailed\u2062 rules and guidance for these options\u200d can be found in each \u2064plan or IRA. Furthermore, despite the possibility of a government shutdown, the IRS is expected to continue operating and collecting \u200dtaxes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But even if the government shuts down, the IRS will most likely\u200d continue to \u2062work, and tax enforcers will keep collecting their paychecks, according to an official.<\/p>\n<p>Doreen Greenwald, president of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), said during a press call on Sept. 18 that\u2063 the IRS would\u200c probably\u200d use funds from the Inflation Reduction Act to remain fully operational in case of\u2064 a shutdown and continue to operate without \u2062interruption.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even in the event of a government shutdown, the IRS is expected to continue functioning and tax\u200b enforcers will still receive their paychecks. Doreen Greenwald, president \u2063of the National \u2063Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), stated that the\u200b IRS would likely utilize funds from the Inflation Reduction Act\u200d to ensure uninterrupted operations during a shutdown.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ms. Greenwald added that the NTEU is still waiting for a final plan from the Treasury Department, while adding that \u200bshe hopes lawmakers will strike a deal to avert a shutdown.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Last \u2064year&#8217;s\u200c $1.7 trillion \u200domnibus funding bill is keeping the government running until \u2062the end of fiscal year 2023 \u200don Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ms. Greenwald mentioned that the NTEU is awaiting a final plan from the Treasury Department and expressed hope that lawmakers will\u2062 reach an agreement to prevent a shutdown.
