However, McCarthy has \u2062conveyed\u2064 confidence he can muster enough support to sway those holdouts, whom the speaker has \u2063expressed frustration toward for obstructing progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve had \u200cthese posted since July, but we had \u2064some \u2064members \u2026 that would shut the floor down and\u2062 we couldn\u2019t do anything,\u201d McCarthy \u2062said. \u201cApparently they&#8217;re willing to work now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers are set to reconvene on Tuesday evening to vote on advancing a combined rule\u200c that contains four appropriations bills, teeing them \u2063up for votes as soon as this week. Those four bills include spending \u2062for the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland \u2062Security, \u200cand\u2062 State and \u2062Foreign Operations\u2062 appropriations.<\/p>\n<p>After that, McCarthy said he hopes to bring \u2062some sort of continuing resolution or\u2062 temporary\u2062 spending measure to the floor sometime this week ahead of\u200c the\u200c shutdown deadline \u2014 a move several hard-line conservatives have vowed \u200cto oppose. McCarthy \u200bcriticized those \u200dmembers Monday morning, noting objections to keeping\u2064 the government open would only result\u2062 in critical agencies losing funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people want\u200c to close the government, it only makes it weaker.\u2062 Why would they want to \u200cstop paying the troops\u2062 or stop paying the border agents or the Coast Guard? \u200cI don&#8217;t understand how that makes you stronger. I don&#8217;t have to stand\u2062 what point \u2064you&#8217;re trying to make,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cI couldn&#8217;t understand why somebody would want to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not yet\u200d clear whether there is substantial support among House Republicans to advance\u2063 appropriations bills this week, especially after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)\u2064 announced she was a \u201chard no\u201d against the \u200drules vote scheduled\u200b for Tuesday. McCarthy can only afford to lose \u2064four GOP votes, \u2062giving him little room for error.<\/p>\n<p>Congress has until Sept. 30 to pass the budget for the next fiscal year, after which the government \u200bwill run out \u200dof money and shut down until a\u200b deal is made. If they fail to do so, many federal\u2064 agencies \u200cwould \u200bbe forced to furlough employees and suspend operations until funding\u200b is restored.<\/p>\n<p>While McCarthy remains optimistic, the road to\u2062 reaching an agreement is not without obstacles.
