And because of that, we\u2019ve withdrawn our values from a lot of these institutions\u200c that have been captured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Public education\u200d was created \u200bas a system for indoctrination, Ms. Wheeler said. It became compulsory \u2063in 1852 in \u2064the state of Massachusetts. The reason\u2063 was to give \u2064knowledge of American civics and instill American values and Protestant values to the children of Catholic immigrants who were coming in great numbers at that time to America.\u2063 It was an indoctrination system meant to implant love\u200d for America first, and not \u200dlove for the \u200bcountries that \u200cthey came from, \u200dto the children of immigrants who were to become the next generation of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>From this point\u2064 of view, indoctrination by\u200b itself \u2062is good or bad depending on what \u2063is\u2064 being\u2063 indoctrinated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>People on\u2062 the right understood that at the \u2064time, Ms. Wheeler \u200dsaid. But in more recent years, they&#8217;ve left their\u200b role in that system in \u201cthe false name\u2064 of neutrality,\u201d and\u200d the void created has been filled by the left\u2019s indoctrination of their values.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"mb-3\">Natural Law as the Goal of Freedom<\/h2>\n<p>Ms. Wheeler \u200bsaid everyone knows that freedom by itself can lead to bad things as \u200cwell, if\u2062 there is \u2063no inherent morality in it. She gave the example\u200c of \u2064drug legalization. She said that what the pursuit of liberty meant \u200bin the foundation\u200c of America was achieving justice, and justice was \u2062actually a way to\u200d harmonize with natural law. \u200cLiberty, as the Founding Fathers meant\u2063 it, \u2064was a\u200c word rooted squarely in scripture.
