Political problems crossbreed with cultural\u200b ailments \u200dand split\u2064 opinions along lines so fresh and inconsistent that the terms <i>left<\/i> and <i>right<\/i> lose shades of meaning with each new debate. Wild claims disseminate via digital\u2063 firehose and \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/too-big-to-trust\/\" title=\"Too large to have faith in.\">service competing ideological camps<\/a> that\u200d no longer share a base reality.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>A Crisis of \u2063Trust: Unraveling the Fabric \u2062of America<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The significant failings of our recent elected officials<\/li>\n<li>The scandals of our billion-dollar\u2063 corporations<\/li>\n<li>The prejudices of \u200cour\u2064 legacy media<\/li>\n<li>The lies proffered by our public\u2062 and \u2062private institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, before we \u2064can even approach our real-world challenges, Americans are faced with an impenetrable \u2063fog of interests and biases \u200dthat all but precludes thoughtful contemplation.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder we&#8217;ve \u200blost trust in just about everything. According\u200d to all major polls, American trust is \u2062nosediving across the board. We don&#8217;t trust \u2064government, \u2062media, \u200ceducation, big business, technology, or one \u200canother. And this isn&#8217;t merely unpleasant background noise. Mistrust and distrust are active players in the political\u200d and cultural life of the country, \u200bshaping our days as surely as any \u200clawmaker, lobbying group, or media behemoth.<\/p>\n<p>We could really use a grand theory right about now\u2014something ingeniously simple\u2063 to capture how we got here and point us toward clear solutions. But\u200d as Gerard Baker argues in the traumatically \u2062brilliant <i>American Breakdown<\/i>, the\u2063 origins of our national\u200b trust\u2064 crisis are complex\u2063 and compounded, and \u2064it won&#8217;t be\u2063 resolved in one \u200bstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Baker, editor at \u200dlarge at the <i>Wall Street Journal<\/i>, contends that the problem began with the United States&#8217; objectively poor performance on a\u200b number of fronts. &#8220;It&#8217;s not that \u2064Americans have suddenly, for no reason, started distrusting institutions\u200b that merit trust,&#8221; he \u200bwrites. &#8220;It is that the institutions themselves have become\u2063 untrustworthy.&#8221; Here Baker wisely resists the low-hanging \u2064fruit of Trump-age resentment as \u200can explanation in \u2062itself. &#8220;To focus on the most extreme and hateful manifestations of public \u2064disillusionment is to miss the underlying cause,&#8221; he \u200bwrites. &#8220;It is the guided\u2064 leadership of the \u2063last twenty years rather than the response to it that explains America&#8217;s current plight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The evidence is compelling. As Baker notes, long before Donald Trump announced \u2063his candidacy, the United States entered a long\u200d and dispiriting foreign war on the strength of bad intelligence, a collapse of the American financial \u2064system\u200d halved \u200cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sitting-congresswoman-claims-that-reparations-could-have-slowed-the-spread-of-covid\/\" title=\"Sitting Congresswoman Claims That Reparations Could Have Slowed The Spread Of COVID\">average net worth<\/a> of\u2063 middle-class\u200d households, \u200cthe increasing flow of illegal immigrants was serially ignored, Big\u200c Tech grew \u2062rich by trading in customers&#8217; personal \u2063data, and social\u200c mobility began to stall. As\u2064 Baker puts it: &#8220;To suggest\u2063 that [Trump] is the architect of collapsing faith in America would be to assign him the kind of power and influence only \u2063he thinks he really wields.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After Trump was elected, he pounded away on the entrenched political establishment as the\u200d source of these mishaps. And then \u2062the establishment did its best to prove him right with a new batch \u2063of bungling and flat-out \u200cdeception: the false charge of Trump-Russia collusion in \u200cthe 2016 presidential election, the now hyper-partisan media&#8217;s daily\u2063 catastrophizing\u200d about conservatives, and the mistakes and misdirection of public health officials\u2064 responding to the COVID pandemic. &#8220;Leading \u2063figures in public health across the country,&#8221; writes\u2062 Baker, &#8220;essentially inverted the \u200cscientific method,&#8221; starting with answers and culling data to match. Americans \u200cnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>Baker adds to this\u2062 run of failure the emergence of\u2063 two complementary trends that were foisted\u200b on \u2062the public at the height of our national doubt: First, the rise of an &#8220;overclass that \u2062has \u2062more in common with its counterparts in London,\u2062 Paris, or Singapore than it does with its compatriots in Louisville, Peoria,\u200d or Scranton.&#8221; This\u200d is the Davos crowd, the influencers, institutionalists, and\u200b billionaires who disdain national identity and\u200b embrace\u2064 climate change as \u200dreligion. Baker&#8217;s portrayal of the Davos set \u200bis peerless and\u200b one of \u200cthe \u2063book&#8217;s crowning delights. Consider his summary of Davos Speak: &#8220;Wander\u200c into a Davos session and\u200c you\u2062 will catch stakeholders dialoguing and mainstreaming multifaceted metrics in\u2063 a cross-platform environment before actioning toward implementation mode. It&#8217;s English, Jim, \u2064but not as we know it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These mainstreaming multifaceted muckety-mucks often find\u2062 common cause\u200d with another emergent class that also speaks its \u200bown language: the radical ideologues of the campus left. What the globally minded Davos folks share with the identitarians and intersectionalists is a messianic disregard for the average American&#8217;s well-being and, \u2064in some cases, a hostility toward his real concerns. Most important, the two elite\u200d forces pushed \u200bour culture and institutions in\u200b bizarre and damaging directions that do real \u2062harm to ordinary people. In something like ESG \u200b(Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) investing, we see clearly how the\u2062 two groups\u2063 merge to \u2063shortchange everyday Americans in the name of\u200b globally minded heroism. ESG-guided funds invest your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hate-being-spewed-in-the-name-of-patriotism-wapo-opinion-attacks-anthem-before-games-2\/\" title=\"\u2018Hate Being Spewed In The Name Of Patriotism\u2019: WaPo Opinion Attacks Anthem Before Games\">hard-earned money<\/a> only in companies that meet certain environmental and\u200c social criteria, but they generally \u200dunderperform funds that \u2062are \u200cstill stuck on\u200d the crazy\u2063 idea that\u2062 making money for shareholders is paramount. &#8220;Not only are [Americans] forced to watch as their corporate overlords use their powerful positions to pursue ideological \u200dgoals many do not\u2062 approve of,&#8221; Baker \u2063writes, &#8220;but they\u200b are actually paying for the privilege of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Baker astutely dismantles a slew of ailing institutions, devoting a chapter each to politics,\u2064 corporate America, news media, science, education, and technology. Each is a gem packed with insight and wit. Noting, for example, in his chapter\u2062 on education \u200bthat a recent survey showed 80 percent of Harvard faculty identified as &#8220;liberal&#8221; or &#8220;very liberal,&#8221; \u200d1 percent \u2063identified as &#8220;conservative,&#8221; and zero said they\u2063 were &#8220;very conservative,&#8221; Baker observes inarguably, &#8220;These are North Korean \u2062levels of political conformity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the book&#8217;s great \u200cstrength is\u2064 in resisting causal\u2064 reductionism and daring to approach \u200bthe trust fiasco in its combined magnitude. No \u2062single factor can \u200bbegin to \u2064explain \u2063it. \u2063In his chapter\u200c on social trust, Baker considers the three\u2063 main causes of mistrust cited in scholarly literature: corruption, economic inequality, and racial diversity. They all \u2064appear \u200dto play some role in our present crisis, but none dispositively. After\u200d all, \u200das Baker points out, Transparency International still\u2064 ranks the United States as one\u200c of the least corrupt countries in \u2063the world. And from 2011 to 2021,\u200d &#8220;on an income basis, the United \u200cStates actually became a slightly more equal society,\u2064 and yet, levels \u2064of\u200b social trust have continued to decline.&#8221; Similarly, polls have shown a gargantuan shift away from bigotry in this\u2063 country over the last half century, yet\u2064 &#8220;Americans \u2064of all races\u200d seem to \u2063have become markedly more pessimistic\u2062 about racial harmony in the very recent past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Baker knows \u200cthe\u2063 problem is more massive\u200c than any individual grievance. Indeed, he writes movingly about the challenge of \u200bmassiveness itself.\u2063 &#8220;The vast scale of the institutions may be \u200bjustified in \u2063terms of economies of\u200b scale,\u2064 or by \u2062the \u2062larger \u200cpurpose they are serving, but dealing with these Brobdingnagian entities induces \u2063a sense of smallness in us,&#8221; he says.\u2064 It&#8217;s an underappreciated point,\u2063 and it applies \u2064to our interaction with businesses, universities, \u2064and government. They&#8217;ve become, in some sense, too big \u2062to trust.<\/p>\n<p>Baker is modest and \u200duncharacteristically vague about\u2064 offering solutions. \u2062But this is apt,\u2063 as \u2063nothing elicits mistrust \u2063as\u200b surely as confidently proposed fixes. And grasping\u2064 the \u2063size of our dilemma,\u200c he\u200d surely understands that the best we can hope at the moment is a good wish list. He&#8217;d like media\u200b companies and universities to be more ideologically diverse in their \u200dhiring. He suggests more transparency from technology\u2064 platforms, more accountability from big business, \u2064and so on.<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s good news here, it&#8217;s that\u2062 opinion\u200c writers can stop\u200d worrying about their possible books on the great American crack-up.
