The restrictions on drayage trucks do not go into effect until the beginning of 2024, and they are already\u200d backfiring as truckers \u2063are\u200c finding ways to evade the ban on \u2063diesel drayage trucks.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/californias-zero-emissions-rule-triggers-a-run-on-diesel-rigs-863d6444?mod=e2tw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, many trucking companies in the state are stocking up on diesel rigs ahead \u2063of the Jan. 1 deadline, ensuring that the \u2063state has a supply of diesel drayage rigs for\u2063 years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Manny Carrillo, the chief executive of Talon Logistics, said \u200dthat much\u2064 of the motivation behind the buying\u200c spree is to\u2064 avoid problems such as the scarcity\u200d of new electric vehicles and the limited \u200bavailability of charging infrastructure once the mandate \u200dkicks\u200c in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are trying to take the hit now at a lot more reasonable cost per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/californias-new-zero-emissions-rule-backfires-as-trucking-companies-load-up-on-diesel-rigs-before-deadline\/\" title=\"California's zero-emissions rule backfires as trucking firms stock up on diesel rigs ahead of deadline.\">month versus buying electric trucks<\/a> next year,&#8221; he\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>California&#8217;s leaders may want\u200d to get rid of all diesel-powered trucks within the next 20 years, but for now, it seems,\u200d that is going to\u2062 be challenging as truckers try to \u200dget\u200c out in front of \u200bthe deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Kenny Vieth, president of ACT Research,\u200d told the Wall Street Journal, &#8220;I have to think every trucker in California\u200b is doing all they \u200ccan to get as many pre-mandate trucks \u2064in place \u2063as they possibly\u2063 can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With the \u2062number of diesel rigs \u2063being purchased right \u200dnow by truckers in California, it seems like\u200c the state government&#8217;s aim of getting to zero carbon emissions\u200b by 2042\u200d is going to be much more difficult than expected.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, it is easy to see why \u200cthese trucking companies are so keen to spend money to purchase these trucks now, as electric\u200b vehicles have proven time and again to be unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>There are not enough electric \u200dtrucks to meet the demand \u200bof\u2062 truckers in the state, \u2062meaning that they will\u2062 be very scarce\u200c and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/electric-vehicle-owners-shock-learning-battery-replacements-cost-20000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very expensive<\/a> \u200b to purchase, just as all other electric vehicles are super costly and out \u200bof reach for most \u200bpeople.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, even if you can get your hands on an electric truck, they\u2063 can only go a few hundred\u200c miles before \u2063needing to stop and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-study-electric-vehicles-cost-charge-filling-car-gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recharge<\/a>, which is time-consuming \u200band \u2063expensive \u2014 if the appropriate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tesla-rigged-dashboards-created-secret-team-exaggerate-range-evs-need-recharging-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charging<\/a> devices can even\u200b be found.<\/p>\n<p>As Manny Carrillo said, better\u2063 to spend the money now \u200cthan\u2064 to have\u2063 to\u2064 pay even bigger expenses later.<\/p>\n<p>It\u200c is simply not fair \u2064to force these trucking companies to switch over to electric models when they\u2062 are more expensive, and the technology is\u2064 just not there yet in order to make it \u2062feasible.<\/p>\n<p>This is not to say that electric trucks do not have a future, but rather, that if they are going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-city-purchases-184-electric-ford-mustangs-for-nypd\/\" title=\"New York City Purchases 184 Electric Ford Mustangs for NYPD\">replace gas-powered<\/a> and\u200c diesel \u200brigs, they still have a\u2062 long way to go before they\u200b are as\u200c reliable.<\/p>\n<p>Electric trucks have a lot of potential, \u200bbut forcing people to switch to them when \u200celectric truck availability and charging infrastructure are not \u200dready\u200c is simply not right.<\/p>\n<h3>A Note from our Deputy Managing Editor:<\/h3>\n<p><em><b>What\u2062 if\u200b you woke up one morning and half of the people you count on had just vanished overnight?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>That \u2062happened\u2064 to me recently. It\u200b was \u2063a surreal and unsettling experience. I couldn&#8217;t help\u2062 but wonder: Where did everyone go? Why did they leave? And most importantly, how will this impact our community?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>As\u200b I started to investigate, I discovered that the disappearances were not\u200d random. They were a direct result of California&#8217;s new zero-emissions rule. The trucking companies that had \u2062once \u2063been the lifeblood of our community were now loading\u200d up on diesel rigs, desperately trying to avoid the impending deadline.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>It was hard to blame them. The push for zero-emissions vehicles is a noble one,\u200b but it&#8217;s clear that it was implemented without\u200b considering the \u200bpracticalities and challenges faced \u2062by the trucking \u2063industry. The lack of\u2064 available electric vehicles and the limited charging infrastructure make it impossible for these\u2063 companies to make the switch overnight.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>I spoke to several truckers who expressed\u200c their frustration with the \u2062new regulations. They understood the need for cleaner air and a healthier environment, but they also pointed out the \u2063flaws in the plan. Electric trucks are not only expensive, but they also have limited range and require frequent charging stops. This makes them inefficient and impractical for long-haul trips.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>It&#8217;s clear that California&#8217;s new restrictions on\u2064 diesel engines\u2064 are well-intentioned but poorly\u200d executed. The trucking \u200ccompanies are not\u200d the enemy here \u2013 they are simply trying to survive and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/man-who-set-fire-at-illinois-planned-parenthood-clinic-sentenced-to-10-years-in-prison\/\" title=\"Arsonist at Illinois Planned Parenthood Clinic gets 10-year jail term.\">continue providing essential services<\/a> to our\u200c communities. Instead of punishing them, we should be working together to find practical and sustainable solutions.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>So where do we go from here?<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>The first step is to acknowledge the challenges faced by\u200c the trucking industry.\u200c We need to invest in research and development to improve the\u2063 technology\u200b and infrastructure for electric trucks.\u2063 This will not \u2062only make\u2063 them more \u2062viable\u200c options for truckers but also create jobs\u2062 and stimulate the economy.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><b>In addition, we need \u2062to provide incentives\u2062 and support for trucking companies to transition to \u200bcleaner alternatives.
