Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Kennedy held\u200b the press conference on the same day that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) \u2062released an update showing the number\u200d of people trying to illegally enter the United States illegally reached the \u2063highest \u200cmonthly figure \u200bin recorded history in August.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency,\u2064 304,162 people were either deemed inadmissible at \u200dpoints of \u2063entry or were caught by \u200cBorder Patrol agents after crossing \u2063the border illegally in August.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That figure stood at\u2062 245,213 \u200bin July. The \u2062August numbers represented a 24 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p>The previous record was also established during President Biden&#8217;s tenure, with 302,412 nationwide encounters in December\u200d 2022, according\u2064 to \u2062CBP data.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the\u200d midst of surging illegal immigration, the White House announced on \u2062Sept. 20 that the Biden administration will \u2063allow around half a million Venezuelans already in the United States\u2014including those who illegally entered the country\u2014to\u200c file for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This will permit them to temporarily work and be protected from deportation.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is extending and redesignating its TPS program for Venezuelan nationals for 18 months due to &#8220;extraordinary and temporary conditions&#8221; in Venezuela that prevent individuals from\u2063 safely returning,\u200d Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. \u2062Mayorkas said.<\/p>\n<p>The redesignation means that approximately 472,000 Venezuelans currently in the United States may be eligible for protection under the \u200bprogram, the DHS said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiving 470,000 migrants\u200c work visas is a\u200c signal to the rest of the\u200b world that anyone who comes to this country is going \u2064to get a work visa. And \u200bthat\u2019s the last thing we want \u2063to\u200c signal at this point. Until the border is secure, we should not be talking about work visas for anybody,\u201d Mr. Kennedy said at the Sept. 22 press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kennedy arrived in \u200cTexas at\u2062 a time when \u200dEagle Pass, Texas, Mayor\u2064 Rolando Salinas Jr. issued an\u200b emergency declaration due to a &#8220;severe&#8221; surge in illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Salinas signed\u200b the order on Sept. 19, officially declaring a state of disaster for the city of Eagle Pass that will last for at least seven days and may be renewed if the crisis persists.<\/p>\n<p>At a Sept. 19 press conference, Mr. Salinas estimated that over Sept. 17 and\u2063 into early Sept. 18,\u200c around 2,500 people crossed into Eagle Pass illegally, though he said that this was\u200b not an &#8220;official, exact number.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maverick\u200d County \u200cSheriff Tom Schmerber \u200csaid that another 2,700 migrants crossed at Eagle Pass on Sept. 19 and 3,000 more \u200carrived on Sept. 20.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:700px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>Illegal immigrants walk in\u2062 the Rio Grande River between \u2062a floating fence and the river bank as they look for an opening on the concertina wire fence to land on U.S. soil in Eagle Pass, Texas, \u200bon July\u200b 24, 2023. But after \u2064seeing the border\u200d firsthand in Arizona in\u200c July, he changed his mind. He said there&#8217;s a need for increased infrastructure and technology at the border, including more segments of a physical wall\u200c and sensors in areas where a wall\u2062 isn\u2019t feasible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democratic Party thinks our function\u200c should be\u200b welcoming all immigrants into the country no matter \u2062what, and \u200bto basically open the borders. And \u2064the experiment has been a disaster, a humanitarian catastrophe,\u201d Mr. Kennedy told The Epoch Times in August.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched it\u2062 firsthand. I watched 300 people come\u200b across the border \u2062and \u2062then be processed and sent to locations all over the country with court dates seven years down the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s\u200d now 7 million \u200bpeople who have come across illegally and have no legal status \u2064in this country. Those people are very vulnerable now to unscrupulous employers who are paying them $5 and $6 an hour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kennedy called the Biden administration\u2019s \u2063open border policy \u201ca way of funding a multibillion-dollar drug and human \u2062trafficking operation for the Mexican drug\u2063 cartels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs\u200c president, I will secure the border, which will\u2062 end the cartel\u2019s drug \u200ctrafficking economy.
