Resnick echoed the neocon talking point that reducing aid would embolden China to act against Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Demonstrating our \u200dresolve with respect to Ukraine is the best way\u2062 to deter [China],&#8221; Resnick stated. &#8220;Abandoning our partners encourages \u2062 [China] \u200cto\u200d conclude that we will fail to provide for Taiwan&#8217;s sufficient \u200cself-defense. In a recent commentary, Seth Jones from the Center for Strategic and International Studies expressed similar sentiments, arguing that\u2062 every dollar \u200dspent on Ukraine is \u2062not\u2063 a waste but a way to strengthen deterrence in Asia and reassure U.S.\u2062 allies.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China Plows Ahead<\/h2>\n<p>However, there is a\u200c glaring problem\u2063 with these\u200c assertions: China&#8217;s aggression towards Taiwan \u200chas only increased despite the billions of dollars\u200d poured into Ukraine by the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Committee for a \u2064Responsible Federal Budget,\u200c over\u200d $113 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars were committed to Ukraine in 2022 after Russia&#8217;s invasion. Yet, China sent a\u200b record number \u200dof military aircraft into Taiwan&#8217;s air defense identification\u200d zone, \u200bdemonstrating a clear\u2063 escalation.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, China \u2063conducted live-fire military\u200d exercises near Taiwan and regularly violated the buffer zone in the Taiwan Strait. These hostile activities have continued into 2023, with a recent record-breaking deployment of military aircraft towards Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>If U.S. aid to Ukraine was \u200btruly deterring China, why has China&#8217;s behavior towards Taiwan worsened?<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c conflict between Russia\u2063 and Ukraine has not improved China&#8217;s intentions towards\u200c Taiwan. The \u200bChinese Communist Party has consistently viewed Taiwan as a Chinese province and has made it\u200b clear that they intend\u200b to take control, by\u2063 force if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to neocon claims, there is no evidence to suggest that \u2064U.S. aid to Ukraine has deterred\u2063 China&#8217;s regional and global ambitions. In\u200c fact, it may have inadvertently strengthened the alliance between Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>Only with strong U.S.\u2063 leadership can China be put on notice.
