When\u200b someone on the\u2064 left does the same or worse, that same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/michael-goodwin-medias-blind-eye-to-joepin-shut-case-in-biden-corruption-allegations\/\" title=\"Media ignores Biden corruption allegations in Joepin-&#038;-Shut case, says Michael Goodwin.\">media remains silent<\/a>, changes the subject, or \u2014 the first \u2063two tactics\u2064 having failed \u2014 decries \u200cthe \u201cpolitics\u2063 of personal destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1823333602\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d3ff5ab57ab54f795d8ea5e4b771fef0 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d3ff5ab57ab54f795d8ea5e4b771fef0\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/09\/19\/lauren-boeberts-sexy-adventure-conservatives-push-for-traditional-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Writing in Salon<\/a> this week, Amanda Marcotte (one of\u2064 the\u200b founders of the \u200dliberal feminist blogosphere) goes beyond mocking Boebert\u2019s lack\u2064 of\u200b propriety. Marcotte argues\u200b the congresswoman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/all-lives-matter-arkansas-gov-signs-near-total-abortion-ban-that-supporters-hope-will-force-scotus-to-revisit-roe-v-wade\/\" title=\"\u2018All Lives Matter\u2019: Arkansas Gov. Signs Near-Total Abortion Ban That Supporters Hope Will Force SCOTUS To Revisit Roe v. Wade\">pro-life convictions<\/a> and early marriage are directly responsible for her lapse in judgment during the production of \u201cBeetlejuice: The Musical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcotte reminds us of what is widely known:\u200b Boebert \u200bgot\u2062 pregnant at 16\u200b and chose to keep her \u200cbaby and marry the \u200bfather. The couple later divorced. Earlier \u200cthis year,\u2063 the congresswoman became a grandmother at 36.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>It\u2019s \u200dgross watching\u200d a 36-year-old member of Congress act\u2063 like a horny teenager, of\u200c course. But also, it\u2019s \u2063not \u200bthe biggest surprise. That\u2019s another downside the \u2018just\u2063 get married\u2019 crowd doesn\u2019t want to acknowledge: Robbing people of their \u2062youth tends to \u200bbreed a desire to make up for lost time.\u2064 There\u2019s \u2062a sexist myth that only men\u2063 want to sow wild oats, but of course, women also have sexual fantasies. One of the best\u200d parts about putting\u200d off marriage for a \u2063time is that you get to make\u200c mistakes and have your\u2064 adventures \u2063in your youth, when the stakes are low. Otherwise, as we see, there\u2019s a risk that <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2023\/03\/09\/lauren-boebert-trashes-ed--then-announces-teen-son-is-making-her-a-36-year-old-grandmother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>a \u206436-year-old\u200c grandmother<\/em><\/a><em> publicly acts out that drunken prom date she didn\u2019t\u200c get \u2062in high school. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Youthful \u200cGrandparents Are \u200da Historical Norm<\/h3>\n<p>A little history lesson, Amanda. First of all, 36-year-old grandmothers\u200d are,\u200d in \u2062fact, quite common throughout history.\u200c I\u2019m sure if\u2062 Marcotte examines\u200c her own family\u200b tree, \u2064she will find\u2063 that \u2063plenty of her \u2063ancestors became grandparents while \u2064still in their 30s.<\/p>\n<p>To Marcotte, an ordinary fact \u2064that has been consistent throughout human history \u200bis scandalous and\u2064 bizarre. This \u200bis, by now, a rhetorical trick familiar\u2062 to \u2064observers of the American left: take what \u2063is normal and \u200cdeclare \u200bit perverse; take what is perverse and\u200d declare it normal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ba29bfb638e84f57d72de0433e76b16 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ba29bfb638e84f57d72de0433e76b16\"><\/div>\n<p>Marcotte complains that conservatives are \u201crobbing people of their youth.\u201d It\u2019s \u2062a \u2062serious charge, but an ahistorical one. The average \u200cage of first marriages (the Boeberts\u2064 notwithstanding) has never been\u2063 higher. Only within\u200c the last\u200b few decades have\u2064 we\u200b decided that emotional maturation is somehow a 20- (or 30-!) year project.<\/p>\n<p>Until very \u2063recently, only the sons of the \u2064very\u2064 wealthy could spend their 20s and 30s indulging themselves and dodging\u200b responsibility. \u201cGetting to make\u2063 mistakes\u201d and\u2064 \u201chave your adventures\u201d before finally\u200d settling \u2063into marriage is \u2063an innovation, not a tradition.<\/p>\n<p>(One\u2063 wonderful part of youth\u2063 is growing\u2062 up with grandparents young enough to be emotionally\u2062 and physically\u2062 present. Encouraging people \u200dto delay marriage and childbearing is, in a very real \u200dsense, robbing\u2062 the \u200cnext generation\u200c of something immensely \u2062precious: a close \u200cand lengthy relationship \u2062with still-healthy grandparents.)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Sowing Wild Oats\u2019 Is a Terrible Goal<\/h3>\n<p>Marcotte calls for a culture that allows young men and women to \u200c\u201csow wild oats.\u201d She implies that\u200c those who are allowed to do so when they are young will \u2064feel no compulsion to do so when they get \u2062older.\u2064 Perhaps \u2064Amanda believes we are all \u2063given a finite supply of \u200doats, and if we\u2063 can \u201csow\u201d enough of them in \u2064our teens and 20s, we\u2019ll be able to settle down, \u200bhaving purged ourselves \u2064of all of our \u200cadventurous impulses.\u2064 As any student of psychology can \u200ctell you,\u200b that\u2019s not\u2062 how humans work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-46f6777b1314bcc6734eb0b04be2c1f4 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-46f6777b1314bcc6734eb0b04be2c1f4\"><\/div>\n<p>We learn to \u200ddo things \u2062by practicing them. If we practice impulsivity\u200d we become more impulsive, not less. If we practice dishonesty, it becomes easier to lie \u2014 not harder.\u00a0If\u2062 we \u2062get into the habit of living on junk food, we will want more junk food.<\/p>\n<p>Ask an alcoholic: over time, we build up both greater tolerance and \u200bgreater craving for the very thing \u2064that\u200d is harming us. It is \u200btrue that some people can pass through a brief period of recklessness in their youth\u200b and \u2064then settle down into \u200ca life of responsibility and restraint. They are the exceptions, not the rule.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women\u2063 Are Happier When They\u2019re Married<\/h3>\n<p>Marcotte, like many \u2062on the feminist left, worries about the renewed interest in encouraging marriage. She is \u200daghast \u200bthat even\u2064 many in \u200dThe \u2064New \u200dYork Times dare to suggest that two parents are better than \u200cone, slamming venerable lefty Nicholas Kristof\u2063 as an \u201calleged liberal\u201d for arguing in favor of marriage as an \u200dessential component of a healthy society.\u2063 She laments that this push towards marriage is merely a device to compel women\u2062 to \u201csettle\u201d for unsuitable \u2064and feckless men.<\/p>\n<p>As a feminist, Marcotte should (presumably) be concerned with women\u2019s happiness. The arguments \u2063in\u200c favor of marriage \u2014 and yes, early marriage \u200c\u2014 are\u2062 not rooted in a desire to disempower women. Rather, \u200cthese \u2064arguments are based\u2064 on \u2064the proven idea that marriage makes women happier.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not just \u2064a talking point for \u2062religious conservatives. It\u2019s \u200bscience. As the \u200cWall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/for-long-term-health-and-happiness-marriage-still-matters-86114ced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> earlier this year (citing a massive Harvard University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590113323000020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>),<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>Compared to those who didn\u2019t marry, \u2063the married\u2062 women also had lower risk of \u2062cardiovascular\u2062 disease, less depression and loneliness, \u200bwere happier and more optimistic, \u200band had a greater sense of\u200d purpose and hope. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Marcotte might\u200b argue that\u200d marriage makes better \u2064sense for women\u200b who have \u201csowed their oats.\u201d She argues that premarital sexual experience \u2062is a prerequisite for\u2063 happiness, or at least, for greater self-control when on a\u2063 date at the theater.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that once again, the evidence is\u200c not on her side. Multiple studies show \u200bthat \u200dwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/does-sexual-history-affect-marital-happiness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexual\u2062 history does\u2062 affect<\/a> marital\u200d happiness, it is\u200c those with the\u2062 highest number of premarital partners who are more likely to divorce.\u2064 To mix metaphors, the\u200c evidence is compelling that wild oats, once\u2063 sown, come back to haunt the sower.<\/p>\n<p>It is \u2064not \u201crobbing people \u200cof\u200b their youth\u201d to try to prevent heartache. It is not robbing\u2062 people of their youth \u200bto encourage them\u200d to marry early\u2062 and\u2063 have\u200b children.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t doubt that Marcotte wants young women to be happy. I \u2064do doubt that she is willing to admit that marriage has the\u200d greatest likelihood of creating \u200cthat happiness. I do doubt that\u2064 she is\u2062 willing to concede\u2064 that self-restraint rather than \u2062reckless indulgence is more likely to lead to fulfillment. I \u200bdo doubt that she understands that the encouragement to \u201csow your wild oats\u201d is setting\u200b young people up\u2062 for disillusionment and dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Politically \u2062Motivated Schadenfreude<\/h3>\n<p>At that Denver theater, Boebert had a foolish human moment. She has rightly apologized. That should \u200dbe the\u2063 end of\u2064 it. But because she is a conservative, and because \u2064her life and \u200dher politics give witness to her pro-life convictions, her apology \u2063is\u200b insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Rather,\u200b she\u200b must\u200d be shamed\u200d over and over again. We must see that surveillance video of\u200b her\u2062 fumblings a hundred times a day. And her ordinary human \u200dfrailties must somehow be connected to her deepest convictions so her embarrassment becomes an occasion to smear\u2063 those who \u200cshare the congresswoman\u2019s \u2063commitment to the unborn.<\/p>\n<p>As \u200ccruel and dishonest as the mockery of \u200cBoebert is, \u200dit is even \u2064worse that the\u2063 left uses \u200dthis incident to peddle a basic \u2062lie about\u2064 human \u2063happiness. Someone is indeed robbing people \u2064of their youth, but it isn\u2019t conservatives doing the robbing. The thieves \u200dare\u200d those who\u2064 preach the lie that self-indulgence and experimentation are pathways to \u2062fulfillment rather\u200b than despair.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b108e9c57349864ca6bd13eaabb330a7 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b108e9c57349864ca6bd13eaabb330a7\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<\/div>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How were early marriages historically perceived and what \u200bwere the reasons behind them?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  \u2062Her than in recent years. \u200dIn fact, throughout history, \u2064early marriages were the norm. \u2064Young marriages\u2064 were often arranged\u200b for the purpose of economic stability \u200cor family alliances. It was not \u2063uncommon for people to start their families in their \u200clate teens or early twenties.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the\u200c idea that having children at\u2064 a young \u200cage automatically robs someone of their youth is a fallacy. People\u200d can still pursue their dreams and have fulfilling lives while being parents. Being a grandparent at 36 does not mean that one has\u200c missed \u2062out on anything. It simply means that they have had the opportunity to experience the joys of \u2062parenthood and grandparenthood at a relatively young\u200c age.\u200c<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting that Marcotte seems to focus solely on Boebert\u2019s personal choices and attribute her lapse in judgment to her pro-life convictions and early marriage. This is a clear example of media bias and the double standard that exists. When someone \u200con the right \u2062makes a mistake, it is often \u200cused to discredit their entire character and belief system. Yet, when someone on the left makes a similar mistake, it is either ignored or brushed aside.<\/p>\n<p>This double standard in the media leads to a skewed perception of reality and a lack of fair and balanced reporting. It is crucial for the media\u200b to hold all individuals, \u2063regardless of political affiliation, accountable for their actions. The selective reporting and bias only serves to divide us further and perpetuate a cycle of \u200danimosity\u200b and mistrust.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, media bias and the double standard that exists \u200bwhen it comes to reporting on individuals\u2064 from\u2062 different political affiliations is detrimental to our society. It is important for the media to strive for fairness and accuracy in their reporting, rather than promoting their own agendas.
