In that case, he was arrested for fatally shooting John Pye while\u200d he was robbing\u200b him. (Courtesy of \u200dHarris \u2062County District Attorney&#8217;s Office)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A week\u200b before \u2064the double murder, Mr. Solomon had reported to police that an unknown man he \u200dhad never\u2063 seen before tried to kill him by shooting\u2064 at him while \u200dparking his \u2063car in \u2062the driveway of his home.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Solomon told police that \u2063he did not know why he had been targeted.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the\u2064 murder,\u2064 Mr. Hawkins&#8217;s GPS ankle \u2062monitor showed that he was waiting near Mr. Solomon&#8217;s residence before cutting a \u2064hole into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-maskless-ocasio-cortez-puts-mask-on-for-photo-op-then-ditches-it\/\" title=\"WATCH: Maskless Ocasio-Cortez Puts Mask On For Photo-Op, Then Ditches It\">chain-linked fence<\/a> in \u200border to approach \u2064his victim faster.\u200d The suspect waited at least \u2062three \u2063hours\u200d for Mr. Solomon to \u2064come\u200b home to carry \u2062out the killing,\u200d according\u2064 to the DA&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>As \u2062Mr. Solomon backed into his driveway with his stepson in the passenger seat, prosecutors said Mr. Hawkins emerged from the hole in the fence, \u2062shot the 11-year-old twice, and then shot Mr. Solomon four\u200d times, killing them \u200bboth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The defendant laid in wait for \u2064three\u200c hours, during the light of day \u200dto execute\u200d a \u200dyoung boy and his stepfather,&#8221; said Nancy Ta, a \u200dprosecutor\u2063 in Harris County assigned\u2064 to the\u200c DA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/man-convicted-of-killing-child-and-his-stepfather-while-free-on-bond-sentenced-to-life\/\" title=\"Man sentenced to life for killing child and stepfather while on bond.\">office specialized homicide division<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hawkins made a decision to end \u200bDominic\u2019s\u200b life\u200c before the boy could even turn 12,\u2062 and\u2063 now 12 citizens of Harris County have decided how Hawkins will \u2063spend the rest of his,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Ta \u200calso pointed out\u2062 that the time of the broad daylight \u2063murder \u2064and the fact\u2063 a hole was cut \u2063into the fence \u2063to gain\u2063 easy access to the\u200c victims were &#8220;evidence of a premeditated ambush.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Besides Mr. Hawkins&#8217;s GPS \u2062ankle monitor records, \u2063surveillance footage from nearby cameras also \u200cshowed that \u200bthe suspect ran toward the murder scene wearing \u200bhis ankle monitor.<\/p>\n<p>The motive as to why Mr. Hawkins targeted Mr. Solomon and his stepson remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Condon, another \u200dprosecutor in Harris County assigned to the DA&#8217;s office specialized homicide division, also said that he \u200bbelieves \u2064the murder was &#8220;an \u2064orchestrated hit&#8221; based on all of the available evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The jury\u2062 did the right thing\u2062 in handing down a conviction for capital murder.&#8221; Mr. Condon said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the jury listened to all of \u200cthe presented evidence during a two-week trial\u200b before convicting Mr. Hawkins\u2062 of capital\u2063 murder on Sept. 18. During this time, Mr. Solomon and\u2063 his stepson, Dominic Sumicek, arrived home. As they entered the driveway, \u2064Mr. \u2063Hawkins emerged from his hiding \u2062spot and opened fire on them, fatally shooting both victims.<\/p>\n<p>The brutal and \u200dcalculated nature\u200c of the crime shocked the community. \u2064It\u2062 was\u200b a cold-blooded ambush carried out in broad daylight, targeting an innocent\u200c child and his stepfather. \u2064District \u2064Attorney Kim \u200bOgg emphasized the \u200dseverity of the crime, stating that \u2064the appropriate sentence for such a capital murder is life\u2064 in prison without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n<p>What makes this case even more chilling is the fact that \u2063Mr. Hawkins was out on bond for another murder\u2063 at\u200b the\u200c time of the\u200b double murder. \u200dIn 2016,\u2064 he had been \u2062arrested for fatally shooting John Pye during a robbery. \u200dDespite this, he was released on bond with a GPS ankle \u2062monitor. Tragically, this monitoring device did not prevent him from\u2063 carrying out the heinous \u2062act.<\/p>\n<p>The events leading up to the double murder \u2063are equally\u2064 disturbing. Just \u200da week \u200dbefore the crime, Mr. Solomon had reported to the police that an \u200cunknown man had attempted to kill him by shooting at him while he\u200d was parking his car in his driveway. Mr. Solomon\u2064 claimed that he did not know why\u2062 he was targeted.<\/p>\n<p>On the day \u2063of the murder, Mr. Hawkins&#8217;s GPS ankle monitor indicated that \u200che \u2062had been waiting near Mr. \u200dSolomon&#8217;s residence. He had cut a hole in \u2062a chain-linked fence to approach his victim more quickly. The suspect had been \u200cwaiting for at least three hours \u200bfor\u200b Mr. Solomon to return home before carrying out the \u2062killing.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062tragic loss of young Dominic Sumicek and his stepfather \u200bis a stark reminder\u200d of the dangers posed\u2063 by gang violence \u200band the \u200dneed for a strong criminal justice system. It also sheds light on the flaws in the current\u2063 bail system, as Mr. Hawkins was \u200dable to commit another murder while out on bond for a previous \u2063offense.<\/p>\n<p>The sentencing of Mr.\u200b Hawkins\u2064 to life in prison without parole \u200dserves as a measure of justice for the victims and their \u2062grieving families. However, it cannot bring \u2062back the lives that were senselessly\u2064 taken.
