Spartz began by acknowledging Garland\u2019s personal history \u2013 his family fleeing to the United States from Belarus\u200c for a life free \u200cof persecution \u2013 and then pivoted to her own.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up in a very \u2062similar country, Ukraine \u200bnow,\u201d Spartz said. \u201cAnd when I came here as a young person,\u2062 I\u200d believed in the value as an American not to be \u200bafraid \u2063of my government.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I wanted to\u2063 tell you and\u2062 I \u200cwanted to share with you and get your thoughts on that,\u201d she continued. \u201cAre you aware that a\u200d lot of Americans are now afraid of being prosecuted by your department? Are you aware about that? Are you aware of that? I\u2019m just saying \u200dare you aware or\u2062 not?\u201d<\/p>\n
Garland paused, cleared his throat,\u200d and then immediately \u2062placed\u2062 the blame on anyone who\u2062 questioned or criticized the Justice Department. He said, \u201cI think that\u2062 constant attacks on the \u2062Department and \u200dsaying \u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not attacks,\u201d Spartz pushed back. \u201cLet me give you an example, you talk\u200b about January 6th people, some people came on January 6th \u2026 there were some\u200b people that came \u2064on\u2062 January\u2063 6th here, you know,\u2064 that had bad intent. But a lot of good Americans from my district came\u2062 here\u2062 because they are \u200dsick and tired of this government not serving them. They came with strollers and the kids,\u200b and there was a chaotic situation because the proper security wasn\u2019t provided.\u201d<\/p>\n
Spartz went on to say that the\u2064 FBI had then hunted down people who had simply been there \u200bwith their kids, prompting fears that they were going to be\u200c the ones on the hook.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are in charge of the department,\u201d Spartz addressed Garland directly, noting that \u200dinvestigations into former President Donald Trump had moved very quickly while investigations into President Joe Biden\u2019s family and former\u200d Secretary of State \u200dHillary Clinton had \u200dmoved very\u2064 slowly.<\/p>\n
