Despite \u200ball of the different policies and proposals and speeches, it has slipped down a little bit as a \u2064political priority,\u201d said The Economist Senior Editor Gady Epstein, who moderated a nearly \u2064three-hour \u2064panel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/event\/from-holding-the-line-to-requiring-a-robust-international-response-to-the-atrocities-against-the-uyghurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion<\/a> designed to prod \u201ca robust international\u200c response to the \u200datrocities against\u2062 the Uyghurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The event was organized by the Atlantic Council\u2019s Strategic Litigation Project, Human \u2063Rights\u2064 Watch,\u200d and Amnesty International.<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>They claim that it has done\u200b little since the Aug. 31, 2022,\u200d release of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/countries\/2022-08-31\/22-08-31-final-assesment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a comprehensive \u200breport \u2062 <\/a>by the Office \u2062of the United Nations \u200dHigh Commissioner for Human Rights\u200d (HCHR).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-figure\">\n<figure style=\"width:600px\" class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption>Activists set \u200bup a mock Uyghur forced labor\u2062 camp outside the \u2063Apple flagship store in Washington on\u200c March 4,\u200c 2022. (Nicholas Kamm\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>This report \u2064concluded\u200c that CCP policies targeting\u200d Uyghurs and\u200b other Turkic communities in western China\u2019s \u2063Xinjiang region \u201cmay\u200d constitute international crimes,\u2063 in particular crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cDespite the report\u2019s strong recommendations to Chinese authorities to\u2064 halt their widespread campaign of abuses, the atrocities \u200bagainst Uyghur and other Turkic people persist,\u201d \u2063the Atlantic Council\u2019s Strategic Litigation Project maintains, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements-and-speeches\/2023\/03\/global-update-high-commissioner-outlines-concerns-over-40-countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concerns<\/a> cited\u200c in 2023 by the current U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk about \u201clarge-scale arbitrary detentions and ongoing family separations&#8221; in the Xinjiang region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe UN\u2019s report was\u2063 a necessary\u200d wake-up call to the international community, \u2063but the on-the-ground \u2064reality of mass imprisonment, \u2063forced labor, family separations, and \u2063suppression of Uyghur language, culture, religion, and identity\u2063 shows that there is still much \u200cthe international community needs to do to\u2062 stop the \u200bongoing atrocities, \u2062reunite families with \u2064their loved ones, and reject\u2064 the Chinese government\u2019s impunity to commit crimes against humanity,\u201d the project \u200cconcludes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u200b is a tragedy that what brings us together is\u200d a\u2063 pressing \u2063need for international action against the\u2062 Chinese government&#8217;s \u2064relentless abuses of Uyghurs and other\u200b target communities,\u201d said\u2062 Rayhan Asat,\u200b a Uyghur human rights lawyer and nonresident \u200csenior fellow at The Atlantic Council, whose brother has been \u201csuffering in a concentration camp since \u200che was unjustly detained\u200c in 2016.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina has robbed us of\u2063 today&#8217;s months and years\u2062 of being with our loved ones through mass\u200b detention, imprisonment, lengthy sentences, \u200dand a separation,\u201d\u2064 she\u2063 said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cThe magnitude of \u200dpain \u200cand trauma China has inflicted upon\u2064 families like mine [and] \u200dupon the Uyghur community as \u200ca whole is\u200d immeasurable and guaranteed to reverberate for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>CCP Objected to Discussion<\/h2>\n<p>While various governments sent representatives to\u200b the discussion\u2014including the United States in the person of\u2062 U.S.\u2064 Ambassador-at-Large for Global \u200dCriminal Justice Beth van Schaack\u2014there was \u200clittle official U.N. \u200brepresentation. Still, the CCP was apparently interested in the event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The CCP warned U.N. member states\u200b not to attend the\u2064 discussion in \u200ca Sept. \u200b14 \u200dstatement issued by China\u2019s U.N. \u2062mission, referring to the event\u2019s three cosponsor\u2064 nonprofits as \u201cnotorious\u2062 anti-China organizations\u201d that are \u200dinterfering in China\u2019s internal affairs \u200bthat the CCP says are geared to economic development and \u2064vocational skills training for Uyghurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are obsessed \u2063with fabricating lies and \u200cspreading malicious \u2064disinformation about Xinjiang with no respect \u2063for truth, and are plotting to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blinken-rebukes-china-for-human-rights-abuses-in-call-with-chinese-diplomat\/\" title=\"Blinken Rebukes China for Human Rights Abuses in Call with Chinese Diplomat\">human rights issues<\/a> as a\u2064 political tool to undermine Xinjiang\u2019s stability and disrupt \u2064China\u2019s peaceful \u200ddevelopment,\u201d China\u2019s U.N. \u2063mission said.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Loeffelhardt, chief of the\u200d German \u200dFederal \u200cForeign\u200d Office Directorate for Asia and the Pacific Division, dismissed the CCP\u2019s claims \u201cwith \u2063one obvious central reminder: human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent, and interrelated. They are not subject to a \u2062hierarchy and cannot be \u2064separated from other topics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a false and dangerous narrative to say that human rights is \u2018an obstacle\u2019 to development,\u201d \u200che continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman Rights always need to be part of \u2062the discussion. When we address human rights \u200bviolations, \u200dbilaterally and multilaterally, it is not\u200b an interference in \u200cinternal affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CCP\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/human-rights-groups-demand-united-nations-sanction-china-for-uyghur-repression\/\" title=\"Human rights groups urge UN to sanction China over Uyghur repression.\">alleged human\u2064 rights violations<\/a> do not end at China\u2019s shores, Mr. Loeffelhardt noted\u2064 and Ms. \u200cAsat confirmed with \u200bpersonal testimony.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>\u201cWe must \u2062not overlook\u2064 what is happening at home,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have\u2064 to ensure\u2064 that victims\u2019 activists and everyone who \u200dspeaks up about possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ai-babies-are-a-thing-and-theyre-raising-major-ethical-questions\/\" title=\"'AI Babies' Exist, Prompting Ethical Concerns\">human \u2062rights\u200c violations<\/a> in \u200cChina can enjoy the\u200d fundamental\u2064 rights in our own countries \u200dwithout interference or intimidation \u200dby foreign entities.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;China&#8217;s Long-Arm Reach&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Ms. Asat\u2062 said she\u2019s one of \u2063those victims\u2019 activists \u201cwalking on a tightrope\u201d advocating for Uyghurs while being\u200b harassed by the CCP in the United \u200dStates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cEven Americans living \u200cin \u2062America are still\u200b subject to China&#8217;s long-arm reach. What they are using is our families, our loved ones, their lives\u2014they\u2019re literally keeping them \u200cas\u200d a\u200b hostage,\u201d she said, describing how \u200dChinese officials \u200b\u201clet you hear your loved one&#8217;s voice for a second, \u2062and you\u2062 know, they&#8217;re \u2062alive.\u200d So then \u200byou must \u200cbe watching your actions for what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This type of\u200b \u201ctransnational repression, international repression beyond\u2062 its borders\u201d doesn&#8217;t qualify for the United Nations\u2019 current definition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/saudi-court-jails-womens-rights-activist-posing-challenge-for-biden\/\" title=\"Saudi court jails women\u2019s rights activist, posing challenge for Biden\">human rights violations<\/a>, Ms. Asat said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s\u200b very \u200ddepressing \u200cbut outrageous that none of\u200b that\u200c meets the\u200b definition of any international norms and laws that China has breached,&#8221; she\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, I think, there has \u200cto be a\u2062 discussion about codifying \u2064these kinds of \u200bstate actions that \u2062are taking place\u2062 outside\u2062 their borders as transnational repression and making\u2063 it part of the international system of accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking for the United \u200bStates, Ms. Van Schaack said: \u201cNotwithstanding [the CCP\u2019s] continued attempts to intimidate and to silence those \u200cspeaking out \u2062on human rights with yet \u200danother example \u200cof a global campaign of transnational repression, I&#8217;m also pleased to see that\u2063 their efforts have only \u2064increased international scrutiny on the\u2062 situation within\u200d Xinjiang, and\u200b particularly the atrocities against\u2063 the Uyghur people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, while it remains very challenging to create pathways to justice for [the CCP\u2019s] atrocities \u200cin Xinjiang, \u2064the high \u2064commissioner\u2019s assessment does offer a solid foundation for further action, so we must\u2064 not stand idly by or be silent or bound to China\u2019s pressure \u2062to \u200bsimply look away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United\u2062 States,\u201d she added, \u201chas chosen\u2064 to \u200dname these atrocities\u2064 as they should \u2064be\u2014as genocide and as crimes against \u200dhumanity. And as they\u200c continue, the\u2063 world must \u200bstand firm against them in \u200bboth word\u200d and deed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waving\u200c a copy of the Chinese U.N. mission\u2019s Sept. 14 \u201cdo not\u200c attend letter,\u201d \u2062Human Rights Watch China Director\u2064 Sophie Richardson said, \u200d\u201cAny government that&#8217;s going to go out of its way to bother doing this, first \u200cof all, has no business\u200d sitting on the UN Human Rights \u2064Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut also,\u201d she concluded, the\u2063 letter is \u200b\u201cessentially confirming that [China] \u2062has got a\u200d lot to hide \u2063and \u2064it knows \u200dit. Part of \u2063our purpose,\u2062 our job, \u200cis to \u2064keep holding and defending this space until\u200c Uyghurs can do it themselves at\u2062 home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2>What role can organizations \u2062like the United Nations and \u200dAmnesty International play in\u200b addressing the Uyghur crisis and advocating for the protection of human rights<\/h2>\n<p><span>  L crimes against \u2064humanity.\u201d It documented a wide range\u2062 of human rights abuses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/alleged-unfair-practices-cnn-bows-to-china-on-eve-of-biden-xi-visit\/\" title=\"\u2018Alleged Unfair Practices\u2019: CNN Bows To China On Eve Of Biden-Xi Visit\">including forced labor<\/a>, mass surveillance, arbitrary detention, and persecution based on religious and ethnic identity. The report \u2064called \u2063for immediate action to address these atrocities and hold the responsible actors accountable.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u200c despite the release of this damning report, the international response has been primarily characterized by inaction.\u2064 The \u2063forum held at the St. \u2063Regis Hotel aimed to shed light \u2064on this \u200dongoing crisis and \u200burge the \u2063international community to take\u200b decisive action.<\/p>\n<p>Gady Epstein, Senior Editor at\u2062 The \u2064Economist, expressed concern over the diminishing \u200cattention given to the issue \u2063of Xinjiang in the media and political discourse. He emphasized\u200d the need to \u2062prioritize the Uyghur crisis and push for a robust \u2064international response. \u2064The\u200d panel discussion \u2062sought\u200d to galvanize efforts to address the atrocities committed \u2064against the Uyghurs and mobilize global support.<\/p>\n<p>The event \u2063was organized by prominent \u2064organizations such \u2064as the Atlantic Council\u2019s Strategic\u2062 Litigation Project, Human \u2062Rights Watch, and Amnesty International. These organizations have \u2063been at the forefront of advocating\u2063 for human \u2062rights and raising\u200b awareness\u2064 about the plight\u200d of the Uyghur people.<\/p>\n<p>They have criticized the United Nations for its\u2064 inadequate response to \u200dthe crisis, highlighting the lack \u2063of meaningful\u2062 action taken since the\u2064 release of the UN&#8217;s comprehensive report. Despite\u2064 the\u200b overwhelming evidence of crimes against humanity, the international community has\u2062 not taken decisive steps\u2063 to\u2063 hold \u2063the \u2063CCP accountable for its actions.<\/p>\n<p>The atrocities committed against \u200cthe Uyghurs include forced labor, cultural assimilation, and mass surveillance.\u2063 These\u200c actions \u200cunderscore the CCP&#8217;s systematic persecution \u2062of the \u200bUyghur \u200cpopulation and \u2064its attempt \u200bto eradicate \u200ctheir culture and identity.<\/p>\n<p>In light of these ongoing \u200dabuses, \u200dit is imperative that the international community takes immediate action.
