But UAW President Shawn Fain \u2062has stated that it wasn&#8217;t enough.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Writing in a Detroit Free Press <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/opinion\/contributors\/2023\/09\/20\/gm-uaw-shawn-fain-mark-reuss-2023-contract-strike\/70899635007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">column<\/a> on Sept. 20, GM President Mark Reuss slammed UAW leadership over its rhetoric and &#8220;flow of misinformation&#8221; during the labor dispute.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;As the past has clearly shown, nobody wins in a strike,\u201d Mr. Reuss wrote.\u200c \u201cWe have delivered\u2063 a record offer. That is a fact. It rightly rewards our team members, while positioning the company for\u200b success\u2063 in\u200c the \u200cfuture. Often in these situations, the clouds of rhetoric can obscure reality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He\u200b added that the UAW&#8217;s full demands are &#8220;untenable&#8221; and would prevent the company\u2064 from investing in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our competitors across the country and around the \u200bworld, most of \u2064whom are non-union, will waste no time \u2062seizing the opportunity we would be handing them,&#8221; Mr. Reuss added.<\/p>\n<h2>Stellantis&#8217;s Furloughs<\/h2>\n<p>Stellantis, which makes the Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram brands, confirmed to The Epoch Times on Sept. 20 that it expects to temporarily\u200d lay off 370 employees because of UAW strike action at the Toledo \u2063Assembly Complex \u200bdue to &#8220;storage constraints.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The move affects workers at the Toledo Machining Plant in Ohio and the Kokomo Transmission and Kokomo Casting facilities in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a consequence \u2063of the strike action at the Toledo Assembly Complex (TAC), Stellantis confirms that it will \u200dimmediately temporarily lay off 68 employees at the Toledo Machining Plant in Perrysburg, Ohio, due to storage constraints. All other production at this facility\u200d continues,&#8221; said Jodi Tinson, a Stellantis spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, \u200cwe anticipate similar actions at Kokomo Transmission and \u200cKokomo Casting in Kokomo, Indiana, affecting an estimated 300 employees \u2063at these two facilities. Stellantis continues to\u2064 closely monitor the impact of the UAW strike action on our manufacturing operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The automaker \u2064has\u200d proposed a 14.5 percent general wage increase over four years, inflation-protection payments, and a \u2063Juneteenth paid\u200d holiday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>&#8220;This is a responsible and strong offer that positions us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/united-auto-workers-could-strike-friday-as-contract-expires-soon\/\" title=\"UAW potential strike looms as contract nears end.\">continue providing good jobs<\/a> for\u200b our employees today and in the \u200dnext generation\u2064 here in the U.S.,&#8221; \u200bMark Stewart, the COO of Stellantis\u2064 North America, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/letter-from-mark-stewart-stellantis-north-america-coo-to-employees-regarding-the-companys-first-economic-proposal-to-the-uaw-301922147.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to \u200demployees. &#8220;It also\u200c protects\u2063 the company&#8217;s future ability to continue to compete globally in an industry that is rapidly transitioning to\u200b electric vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UAW thinks it \u2064is a &#8220;deeply unfair offer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Ford Layoffs<\/h2>\n<p>A day after UAW workers walked off\u200c the job, Ford announced a \u2063round \u2062of temporary layoffs, affecting \u2063600 employees at the Michigan Assembly Plant&#8217;s body construction department\u2062 and \u2064south sub-assembly area of integrated stamping.<\/p>\n<p>The automaker warned that the strike would produce\u200c &#8220;knock-on effects&#8221; for other parts of the company&#8217;s supply chain. This\u200d would force Ford to close down various manufacturing locations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not\u2063 a lockout. This layoff is a consequence of the strike at Michigan Assembly Plant\u2019s final \u200cassembly and paint departments because the components built by these 600\u2064 employees use \u200cmaterials that must be e-coated \u200dfor protection. E-coating is completed in\u2062 the paint department, which is on\u200b strike,&#8221; Ford said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Since Aug. 29, Ford has presented four \u200ccounterproposals to union \u200bleadership. Details of the offer are unknown, but Unifor Ford Master Bargaining Chair John D&#8217;Agnolo said in a\u200c statement that the deal &#8220;makes\u200c the kind \u200bof gains our members need today and adds greater financial security \u200cfor the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Bracing \u200cfor Broader Strike<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Fain confirmed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/uaw.org\/uaw-president-shawn-fain-announces-stand-strike-will-expand-noon-friday-big-three-fail-make-substantial-progress-negotiations-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video message<\/a> posted to social media \u2062on \u2064Sept. 18 that \u200bthe union&#8217;s strike could expand if &#8220;serious progress&#8221; is not made in \u2063contract negotiations with the Detroit Three.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That will mark more than a week since our first members walked out.
