Librarians then applied standard criteria for weeding\u2064 older books, such as low circulation.\u2062 Thus far, there\u200d seemed no cause for \u2063controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Trouble began, however, with the \u2064curation cycle\u2019s second step. Here the PDSB required librarians to give\u200d preference to \u2063\u201cresources that promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/school-board-recently-flipped-conservative-revokes-anti-racism-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-racism<\/a>, cultural responsiveness, \u2064and inclusivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PDSB adopted this step in\u2063 response to the Education Ministry\u2019s Directive 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Board \u2064shall evaluate books, media, and\u2062 all other resources currently in use\u2064 for teaching and learning English, History, and Social Sciences for the purpose of utilizing resources that are\u200d inclusive and culturally responsive, relevant, and reflective\u200b of\u2063 students, and the \u2064Board\u2019s \u200bbroader school communities,\u201d Directive\u200c 18 read.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy and\u200c Confusion Surrounding the Book Purge<\/h3>\n<p>Several people, including trustee Karla \u200bBailey, believed that the mass weeding-by-date took place during\u2062 the curation cycle\u2019s first step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you talk to the librarian in the library, the books are being weeded by the date, no other \u2064criteria,\u201d Bailey said at a May 8 \u2064board committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p>This would seem to imply \u2062that the weeding-by-date had nothing to do with\u200d the Education Ministry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/elon-musks-relationship-transgender-son-caused-billionaire-go-anti-woke-biographer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">woke<\/a> directive.<\/p>\n<p>But it did. In fact, anyone who understands authoritarianism and human nature knows \u200dthat it did.<\/p>\n<p>Consider,\u2062 for \u200cinstance, the public statements of education officials.<\/p>\n<p>First, Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce wrote\u2063 to the PDSB to insist that it stop \u2064weeding by date alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is offensive, illogical and counterintuitive to remove books from\u2063 years\u2063 past that educate \u2064students on Canada\u2019s history, antisemitism, or celebrated literary classics,\u201d Lecce wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Then,\u2063 the PDSB issued a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u2063 Peel District School Board\u2064 works to \u2062ensure that the\u200b books available in \u200dour school libraries are\u200d culturally responsive, relevant, inclusive, and reflective of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nascar-diversity-internship-white-people-banned-applying-blatantly-illegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diversity<\/a> of our school communities \u2064and the broader society,\u201d the\u200c statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, according to \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-library-books-have-faced-challenges-for-decades-but-a-recent-shift-has\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Globe and Mail<\/a>, a Canadian news outlet, the PDSB\u200b disavowed the librarians\u2019 indiscriminate \u200cpurge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe board countered\u200b this \u2063week that \u2062teacher librarians had not been given direction to remove all books\u200c that \u200dwere published prior to \u20632008 \u2063\u2014 and did not take\u200b any responsibility for the confusion,\u201d The Globe and Mail story read.<\/p>\n<p>Curiously, \u2063neither the \u2062CBC nor The Globe and Mail interviewed an actual librarian who took part in the weeding.<\/p>\n<p>In some respects, the \u2062omission does not matter. After all, librarians no doubt \u200bwould have parroted education \u2064officials\u2019 rhetoric about \u201cvaluing diversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/leftist-enclave-inclusivity-kindness-shows-true-colors-gop-senator-moves-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inclusivity<\/a>\u201d or some\u200c such nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>Librarians did not need \u200bspecific \u200dinstructions. They simply knew \u200bthat in the current climate anything\u200d old might be \u2062suspect.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, whether they \u2063purged \u2063those old books during the \u2064first or second curation step does not matter.\u200b They knew what the\u2063 second step would demand of\u2063 them. Subconsciously combining the steps would have made no practical difference.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u200b indoctrination molds people into that\u200b kind of behavior.\u2063 They anticipate what the\u2063 authorities will expect and condition\u2063 themselves \u2064to behave accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities\u2019 own objections to the weeding\u2063 process illustrated as much.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, what mattered was not that students would lose access to Anne Frank\u2019s \u201cThe \u2064Diary of a Young Girl\u201d and thousands of other \u2062classics simply for the sake of having such time-tested books.<\/p>\n<p>What mattered, according to the bureaucrat Lecce, was that such books \u201ceducate \u200dstudents on Canada\u2019s history, \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/soros-gets-bad-news-ingenious-group-rises-cant-claim-antisemitism-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antisemitism<\/a>, or celebrated literary \u200dclassics.\u201d Hence, he found their\u200b removal\u2064 \u201coffensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even Lecce\u2019s language cultivated an authoritarian atmosphere. He showed no concern for students\u2019\u200c intellectual freedom. Instead \u2014 \u200cin\u2062 an age when being offended\u200d confers moral authority \u2014 he took offense.<\/p>\n<p>Librarians notice these\u2064 things. Everyone does.<\/p>\n<p>In this specific instance, librarians \u200dheard or read the phrase \u201cequitable curation cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They knew that the second step required them to focus on \u201canti-racism\u201d resources.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps\u200b they also read Directive 18\u2019s \u200ddemand for \u201cinclusive and\u2064 culturally responsible\u201d books.<\/p>\n<p>Though \u2062they did not yet know, they would not have been surprised\u2062 to learn that \u200dthe PDSB took no responsibility. In authoritarian regimes such as those founded on\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/woke-head-teachers-union-told-revisit-schoolhouse-rock-posting-must-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">woke<\/a> lies, responsibility rests everywhere and nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>Lecce and the PDSB might not have wanted <em>every<\/em> pre-2008 book removed from \u2064the school library. That would have \u200btaken them too literally.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bill-maher-compares-woke-mob-enforcers-maos-cultural-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mao<\/a> \u200bone day\u2062 denounced the front lawn as a bourgeois luxury, students across China went outside and began\u2064 pulling grass out of \u2062the ground.<\/p>\n<p>They made war on everything old.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/schools-purging-books-2008-guarantee-inclusivity\/\">Schools Purging All Books from\u200b Before 2008 \u2064to Guarantee \u2064Inclusivity<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The Western \u200cJournal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How does prioritizing ideology over substance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schools-purging-all-books-from-before-2008-to-guarantee-inclusivity\/\" title=\"Schools removing pre-2008 books for inclusivity.\">educational materials impact students&#8217; intellectual growth<\/a>?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Nada&#8217;s history, antisemitism, or celebrated literary\u2062 classics.\u201d In other words, the books were valuable not \u2064for their\u2063 content, but for \u2063their potential to shape students\u2019 thoughts and beliefs in line with\u200c the dominant ideology of the day. The same applies to the PDSB, which emphasized the need for books to be \u201cculturally responsive, relevant, inclusive, and reflective of the diversity of our school communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This focus on ideology \u2064over substance is deeply concerning. It\u200c undermines the purpose of libraries, which is to provide a wide range of knowledge and ideas for students to explore and learn\u2063 from. By removing books published before 2008, libraries are effectively erasing\u200d a significant portion of history and culture.
