He detailed his \u200cinteractions with\u2062 Irving and Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger on January 3rd, where he requested\u200c approval for National\u200d Guard soldiers to secure the Capitol on January 6th.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>During his meeting with Irving, Sund proposed bringing in the National Guard to assist with perimeter security during the joint session of Congress. However, Irving&#8217;s \u2064response was discouraging. Sund recalled, &#8220;His \u200dfirst response was: &#8216;I don&#8217;t know. I don&#8217;t like the optics of that.&#8217; And his second response was: &#8216;Besides, \u200cthe\u200c intelligence doesn&#8217;t \u200csupport it.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Irving directed Sund to discuss the matter \u200cwith Stenger, who\u200b suggested reaching out to the Pentagon to assess the Guard&#8217;s availability \u2062in case of an emergency.
