The change was tailored to\u200d only affect senators \u200band not\u2064 staff\u200b members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenators \u200bare able to choose what \u2062they wear on\u200b the\u200c Senate\u2064 floor. I will continue to\u200b wear a\u2064 suit,\u201d Schumer said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/09\/17\/senate-drops-dress-code-schumer\">statement \u200cto Axios<\/a>, the first news outlet to report the change over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>As the story\u200b went viral, many of the \u2062100 members\u2063 of the Senate began \u200dto react to the new clothing \u200dparadigm. Some Republicans joked about it and offered wild outfit ideas while others complained \u2062about the\u2064 change \u2062or indicated that they were not \u2062concerned.<\/p>\n<h3>Senators Embrace the New Dress Code<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) joked to reporters that she planned to \u201cwear a bikini,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/susan-collins-jokes-wear-bikini-senate-while-slamming-dress-code-changes\">according to NBC News<\/a>. Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/susan-collins-jokes-wear-bikini-senate-while-slamming-dress-code-changes\">reported<\/a> the\u2064 senator \u2064clarified, \u201cObviously, I\u2019m \u200bnot \u2064going to wear a \u200bbikini,\u201d adding, \u201cBut the\u200d fact is, as I understand it, I\u200d could!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1703530169263145148\">shared<\/a> a GIF of a shirtless Jack Black in the 2006\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0457510\/\">luchador comedy film<\/a> \u201cNacho Libre\u201d in response to Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO)\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1703444213302542776\">asking<\/a> if they will see Cruz in jorts and a tank top. Their colleague, Sen. \u200dJohn Cornyn (R-TX), \u2064asked\u2064 on X,\u200b \u201cDouble standard?\u201d He later <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnCornyn\/status\/1703474016546140257\">added<\/a>, \u201cFlip flops, cutoffs and t shirts for all!\u201d \u200dalong with a laughing \u2062emoji.<\/li>\n<li>A HuffPost reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/igorbobic\/status\/1703904738041799092\">said<\/a> Sen. Lisa \u2064Murkowski (R-AK) indicated she was \u201cfine\u201d with the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-the-left-weaponizes-kindness-to-manipulate-you-into-giving-them-what-they-want\/\" title=\"How the Left Uses 'Kindness' to Manipulate for Their Gain\">dress\u2063 code<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m not so hung up on things to\u200c think that every \u2064single day a man \u200dneeds to wear a neck tie,\u201d \u2063Murkowski said. \u201cIf\u2062 I had my way, we would have summer casual for men so\u200b we didn\u2019t have the air conditioning so low and spend so \u2062much money \u2062keeping this place cold.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Opposition \u200cto the New Dress Code<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sen. Firefighters. Judges. \u2063Pilots. They \u2063all have uniforms.\u200d Ours is a suit and tie. We shouldn\u2019t abandon it because it\u2019s more \u200ccomfortable to wear sweats.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) criticized the \u200dnew rules on X, \u2062to which Sen. Tina Smith\u2063 (D-MN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTinaSmith\/status\/1703853202012094840\">responded<\/a>, \u201cSeriously? You\u2019re b****ing about Senate dress code\u200b when House Republicans are about to drive\u2063 the\u200d Federal Government\u200b off a \u200ccliff? Again? She wrote, \u201cThe **image** of our government is important. Dignity, decorum, and professionalism should still \u2062matter. Imagine if a corporation told its employees to \u2062come \u2064to work in pajamas&#8230;.This is disappointing, and the Senate should\u200b reconsider this decision.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO)\u2062 also took\u2063 to Twitter to criticize the change, \u200cstating, \u201cIf \u200cpeople want to dress like they just rolled out of bed, fine.
