During the five-year period of the \u2064study, reported murders\u200c rose by about 11.5\u2063 percent, which translates into \u2063more than 3,000 additional homicides, the \u200dstudy \u200cnoted.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition, property crime arrests \u200bfell by about 12 percent,\u2063 and \u200bthe property crime clearance rate\u2014the number of cases solved by\u2062 law \u200benforcement\u2014saw a \u2062\u201csharp decline\u201d of 8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese statistics are not only alarming but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/burning-up-their-plastic-bidenflation-fueling-soaring-credit-card-debt-report-says\/\" title=\"\u2018Burning Up Their Plastic\u2019: Bidenflation Fueling Soaring Credit Card Debt, Report Says\">offer compelling evidence<\/a> of a substantial decrease in police activity,&#8221; Mr. Campbell wrote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The pressure\u2064 put on law enforcement\u2064 was evident in early September \u200bwhen the New York Police Department (NYPD)\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/nypd-to-rewrite-protest-engagement-rules-after-landmark-george-floyd-deal-5487201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">settled a lawsuit<\/a> alleging excessive use of force against George Floyd \u2063protesters by agreeing to overhaul how it responds to demonstrators.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The settlement agreement requires the NYPD to\u2063 deploy fewer \u200cofficers in most public protests and use a four-tier system to \u200bdetermine appropriate police response, with a\u2063 focus on deescalating the\u200d situation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>It also would prohibit \u200bthe practice of &#8220;kettling,&#8221; in which officers surround \u200band confine a group\u2063 of\u2063 people to arrest them. The agreement would also set\u2063 up a \u2062collaborative committee \u200cthat will\u2062 evaluate how the NYPD responds to protests for the next three years.<\/p>\n<h2>Police Morale and Defunding<\/h2>\n<p>The \u2064study found that BLM \u2064protests \u2062triggered\u200c by the death of Mr. Floyd led to a decline in favorability\u2064 toward the police \u2063and increased support \u200cfor police reform, \u200cspecifically in \u201cliberal areas\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, police morale suffered, leading to a 279% increase in voluntary resignations among police officers,&#8221; the study said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-figure\" style=\"margin-left:0;margin-right:0;max-width:1200px\">\n<figure style=\"width:640px;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto\" class=\"alignnone\"><figcaption>A suspected looter\u200b carrying a pair of shoes run past National Guard soldiers in Hollywood, Calif., on June 1, 2020, after a \u2062demonstration over the death \u200dof \u2064George\u2064 Floyd. \u200b(Robyn Beck\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The George Floyd protests also pushed \u200dfor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/2-years-later-defund-the-police-movement-continues-to-haunt-police-4968174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defunding police departments<\/a> across the country, accusing officers of engaging in\u200c brutality.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/2-years-later-defund-the-police-movement-continues-to-haunt-police-4968174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> with The Epoch Times \u2063in\u2062 early January, Dave Smith, a veteran police officer and law enforcement trainer, said \u200cthat defunding led to the destruction of morale among officers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Betsy Smith, a retired police\u2062 sergeant and wife \u200dof Mr. Smith, pointed out that police departments\u200b have faced \u201ctwo and a half years of demonization\u201d and\u200c many of them are\u2062 \u201cshort-staffed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Tucson, Arizona,\u200d police\u2063 staffing declined \u2062to a \u2064level not \u200bseen since \u200bthe mid-1970s, Ms. Smith said, while a recruiting\u2062 event\u200b in Phoenix only attracted 35 people rather than the usual 1,000 applicants, \u2064she added.<\/p>\n<p>Attacks\u200d on police \u2064officers also rose. According \u200cto \u2064the FBI,\u200c at least one police officer was killed \u200devery six days on average \u200bin 2022, making\u2063 it the third most dangerous\u200d year for law enforcement\u200d officers \u200bin two decades.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Meanwhile, the FBI refused\u200d to classify BLM as a terror threat despite \u2063incidents of violence \u200cunleashed\u2064 by participants\u200c during the\u200b George Floyd protests.<\/p>\n<h2>No Tracking\u2063 of\u2063 Violent Protesters<\/h2>\n<p>During a House\u200d Oversight Hearing \u200con counterterrorism on Sept. 29, 2021, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) asked Timothy Langan,\u200c assistant director of the FBI\u2019s Counterterrorism Division,\u2062 about how the \u2062agency was dealing with groups like\u2063 BLM and Antifa, a far-left extremist group.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. \u200cLangan replied that the \u2063FBI\u2062 does not classify \u200cthem as \u201cdomestic\u200c terrorist\u201d groups. Instead, \u200cBLM\u200c and Antifa are classified as &#8220;movements.\u201d Neither of the groups are classified\u2063 as \u201canti-authority\u201d or \u201canti-government\u201d organizations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/radio\/2021\/10\/15\/183360901\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breitbart<\/a> at the \u2062time, Ms. Mace called the revelation \u201cshocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201c[The FBI was] telling all of America \u2062that\u200d they don\u2019t\u200c track acts of violence\u200b by these\u200b violent groups. [It] \u2064 is\u200b astounding, and further in that inquiry, the FBI then tell me that there are about 75 open cases of \u2018anti-government-related\u2019 categories,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve\u2062 all seen the violence over the last two years across cities around the nation, literally \u200bAntifa and Black Lives Matter burning down street corners, \u2064destroying companies, destroying\u200b people\u2019s \u2064livelihoods, pulling people out of their cars and\u2063 beating them in \u200dbroad daylight, and\u200d we don\u2019t track Antifa because\u2014quote\u2014&#8217;it\u2019s a movement.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n    <em>Michael Clements contributed to this report.<\/em>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> How \u200ddoes \u2062decreased proactive policing in response to\u2062 protests \u200bcorrelate with an increase in homicides?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  Resulted in a significant increase in \u2064homicides,\u201d the study concluded.\u200c The researchers\u200d examined data \u2062from the\u2063 FBI\u2019s\u2064 Uniform Crime Reporting program, analyzing crime\u2062 rates in over 500 cities across the United States.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to the study, in cities where police \u200ddepartments became less proactive in response to\u2064 BLM protests, homicide rates \u200bincreased by 17\u2063 percent. This increase \u200bwas particularly pronounced in cities with \u2062higher\u200c rates of violent crime to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>The study also noted that while police killings of civilians did decrease during the periods of intense protest, this decline did not \u2064necessarily translate to improved community safety.
