So, what\u2019s their excuse\u2063 for the \u2063\u201cadopted son\u201d remarks?<\/p>\n<p>Well,\u2064 according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/tuohy-family-says-term-adopted-son-reference-michael-oher-used-colloquial-sense-only\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>, lawyers for the couple admitted in court documents \u2064filed Thursday \u2062that they \u200bhad called him their adoptive son on certain occasions. The occasions are\u200b not specified, but it\u2019s unlikely \u200cthe couple would \u2062perjure themselves in a \u200cway that would harm their case.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to documents quoted by Fox, the Tuohys insist the \u200bterm \u2064was used \u201cin the colloquial sense and \u200bthey have never intended that reference \u200bto be viewed with legal implication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Fox noted, Oher\u2019s lawsuit accuses the\u2062 couple \u200c\u201cof falsely representing\u200c themselves as \u200bhis adoptive parents, saying he discovered in February the conservatorship that \u200dwas agreed to nearly 20 years ago was \u200cnot the arrangement he thought. Oher\u200b claimed the Tuohys kept him in the dark when it came\u200c to financial dealings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tuohys have\u2064 repeatedly\u2064 denied Oher\u2019s claims and on Thursday maintained their willingness to end the conservatorship. The \u2064family said \u200bthey\u2064 loved Oher like a \u200cson\u2062 and \u200cprovided him with food, shelter, clothing \u200band cars while he lived with them. They\u200c denied saying they\u2062 intended to legally adopt him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 the suit,\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/blind-side-producers-detail-paid-tuohys-michael-oher-rcna101775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a> reported, Oher sought an \u200cend to the conservatorship and demanded the couple\u2062 provide \u201ca full\u2063 accounting \u200cof the profits\u200c they made from \u200c\u2018The Blind Side.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, of course, there\u2019s another side\u2062 of the \u200cstory, with the family saying that\u200b the 37-year-old Oher is trying to shake them down and \u201cthe \u2063idea that the \u200cfamily ever sought to \u200bprofit off Mr. Oher\u2063 is not only\u2062 offensive, it is transparently ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While admitting in court documents \u200bthat you called someone your adoptive\u2062 son only \u201cin the colloquial \u200csense and \u2026 never intended\u200c that reference to be \u200bviewed with legal implication\u201d looks pretty bad, the Oher\/Tuohy case is \u2064a muddled \u2064one indeed, and one where \u200dit\u2019s difficult to discern \u200bwho is \u2064right, if indeed anyone is.<\/p>\n<h3>For the\u200d Tuohys\u2019\u2064 part, Sean says \u200cthat the conservatorship took effect \u2062when \u2062Oher wanted to\u200b go to the University of\u200d Mississippi, or Ole Miss, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/swedish-soccer-star-slams-lebron-james-stop-preaching-politics-do-what-youre-good-at\/\" title=\"Swedish Soccer Star Slams LeBron James: Stop Preaching Politics, \u2018Do What You\u2019re Good At\u2019\">play football<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMichael was obviously living with us for \u2063a long time, and\u2064 the NCAA didn\u2019t like that,\u201d Tuohy said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymemphian.com\/section\/sports\/article\/37925\/sean-tuohy-responds-allegations-michael-oher-blind-side-money?fbclid=IwAR28qy94Z6-b5DfpOH2SL1yj0Co8Z5o5Pr77YHFXo10nzbp-DkB3s76izF0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Memphian<\/a>. \u201cThey said the only way Michael could go \u2063to Ole Miss was if he was actually part \u2063of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe contacted lawyers who had told us \u200dthat we couldn\u2019t\u2063 adopt over the \u200bage of 18. The only thing we could do was to have a conservatorship.\u2064 We were\u2064 so concerned it was on the\u200d up-and-up that\u200d we made sure the biological mother came to court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the family does have character witnesses on their side \u2014 some more naturally believable than others, it\u2019s worth noting.<\/p>\n<p>Hugh Freeze\u2063 \u2014 currently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/deion-sanders-stuns-college-football-world-with-first-game-win-over-tcu\/\" title=\"Deion Sanders shocks college football with debut victory against TCU.\">head\u200b football coach<\/a> at Auburn University, but Oher\u2019s head\u2062 coach in high school and an assistant \u2064coach while Oher was at Ole Miss\u200b \u2014  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/know-witnessed-michael-ohers-high-school-coach-says-facts-will-come-amid-dispute-tuohys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took the family\u2019s side<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know \u200dthis: If Michael called\u200b Sean [Tuohy] right \u200cnow and said, \u2018let\u2019s work \u200bthis thing out,\u2019 Sean and Leigh Anne \u2062would\u2064 be there in a hurry to hug his neck and tell him he\u2019s loved,\u201d Freeze said\u200c last\u2064 month.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2063 is worth noting, however, that Freeze has what sportswriters like to euphemistically call\u2064 \u201ccharacter issues;\u201d after\u2063 rising from assistant coach to head \u200ccoach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/video-sec-football-kicks-off-florida-ole-miss-players-kneeling-catch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Ole Miss<\/a>, he was forced to resign after it \u200cwas revealed he had <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2722890-hugh-freeze-reportedly-in-jeopardy-of-being-fired-by-ole-miss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called an escort service<\/a> from a school-issued phone; it was reported he was kicked to the curb\u2063 after the school \u2063discovered \u201ca pattern of personal misconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OleMiss?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OleMiss<\/a>: Hugh Freeze forced out after \u201ca \u200cpattern of personal misconduct\u201d that\u2063 was discovered &#038; \u201cis totally unrelated \u2062to the NCAA case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u200dBruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BruceFeldmanCFB\/status\/888195691209662464?\">July 21, \u200c2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The school was later forced to vacate 27\u2064 of the team\u2019s \u2063wins under Freeze\u2019s \u200dtenure and received a two-year ban from \u200bpostseason play due to recruiting violations, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2019\/02\/12\/ole-miss-vacates-wins-ncaa-violations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sports\u200c Illustrated<\/a> \u2064notes. So, you know,\u200c there\u2019s \u200d <strong>that<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(For what \u200dit\u2019s worth, Freeze \u200bhas undergone his own\u200c attempt at\u2064 a\u200d redemption arc, taking\u200b the\u2064 head\u2064 coaching job at \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-liberty-university-students-troll-joe-biden-chant-go-brandon-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liberty University<\/a>, a Christian school, after being fired \u200dat\u2064 Ole\u200b Miss in \u20642017. He then \u2063got the Auburn job in 2022 even after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/auburnfootball\/2022\/11\/chelsea-andrews-auburn-never-asked-about-hugh-freeze-messages-defending-libertys-ian-mccaw.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial period<\/a> \u200c at Liberty.)<\/p>\n<p>However, \u2063\u201cThe \u200bBlind Side\u201d author Michael Lewis \u2014 a creative nonfiction\u2064 icon\u200c whose other authorial \u2064efforts include \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/read-alleged-texts-jonah-hill-manipulative-abusive-nothing-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moneyball<\/a>,\u201d\u200d \u201cThe Big Short\u201d and \u201cLiar\u2019s Poker\u201d \u2014\u200b is somewhat more credible as \u200ca character witness.<\/p>\n<p>According to an August interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2023\/08\/16\/michael-lewis-blind-side-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>,\u200b he also backs the Tuohys, saying they \u201cplanned to \u200devenly split their share [of the movie profits] with Oher, who declined the payments \u2062in what may be a prelude \u2063to a lawsuit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The major\u200d issue,\u200c Lewis told the Post, may not be greed on either the side of Oher or the Tuohys \u2063but on the part \u200bof the\u2062 Hollywood system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael Oher \u200bshould join the\u200b writers strike,\u201d Lewis said. \u2063\u201cIt\u2019s outrageous how Hollywood accounting \u2064works, but the money is \u200cnot in the \u200dTuohys\u2019 pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I feel really sad about\u200c is I watched the \u200cwhole thing up close,\u201d Lewis added. \u201cThey showered him\u200b with resources and love. That he\u2019s\u200c suspicious\u200d of them is breathtaking. \u200dThe state of mind \u2064one has to \u200bbe in to do\u200d that \u2014 I feel sad for \u200chim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This jibes with\u200d what Sean\u2064 Tuohy told the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymemphian.com\/section\/sportsgeoff-calkins\/article\/37925\/sean-tuohy-responds-allegations-michael-oher-blind-side-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Memphian<\/a>, an online publication, saying they \u201cdidn\u2019t make any money off the\u200b movie \u2026 Well, \u2062 [\u2018Blind Side\u2019 author] Michael Lewis gave us \u2063half of his share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s clear is this:\u2064 Michael Lewis\u2019 book and the subsequent film \u2014 as well as Oher\u2019s own book \u201cI Beat the Odds\u201d\u200c \u2014 present a much neater\u2064 arrangement than court documents now seem to show.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s also clear \u200bis this: Michael Oher was big\u200c business. The film \u201cThe Blind Side\u201d alone\u2063 took home $309\u200b million worldwide on a $29 budget, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl3796338177\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Box Office Mojo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Who got\u200d what\u200d from that \u200disn\u2019t clear. Perhaps this is a shakedown\u2062 by Oher,\u200d as the family\u2019s\u200d attorney seems to attest to.
