He has \u200ca new novel \u200dout, and it\u2019s \u2064dripping with TDS. The\u200b novel is titled \u201cHolly,\u201d \u2062and, unlike King\u2019s \u200dprevious \u2062work, it is blatantly political.<\/p>\n<p>Before \u200cthe book hit the \u2063market on Sept. 5, King said\u200c he was readying himself for a flood of \u2063hate. \u2064In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/stephen-king-interview-holly-anti-vaxxers-1234816605\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rolling Stone<\/a>, King\u2062 said, \u201cI think that a lot of people are not going to \u200clike it. \u200bI think that a lot of people \u2014 particularly people on\u200b the other side of the COVID issue and the Trump issue \u2014 are going to give it one-star \u2064reviews on Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why would King \u200bjump to such a conclusion unless the novel\u2064 was <em>intended<\/em> to taunt \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/conservatives-sound-alarm-biden-returns-masking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conservatives<\/a> \u200c who were suspicious of the \u2062government\u2019s\u2062 COVID measures and supported Trump? Either\u2062 King is paranoid \u200bor he \u200dknows what he \u2062is doing.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, he\u2019s not worried about offending a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/knowles-the-bad-faith-debate-over-cancel-culture\/\" title=\"KNOWLES: The Bad Faith Debate Over \u2018Cancel Culture\u2019\">large swath<\/a> of potential readers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut all I can say to those people is, \u2018Knock yourself out,\u2019\u201d he told Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n<h3>King&#8217;s\u2063 Political Novel<\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/09\/06\/1197679876\/holly-is-one-of-stephen-kings-most-political-novels-to-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a>, the\u2064 main character, Holly, has to deal with not only\u2064 the COVID-19 pandemic but\u2063 with \u200bher mother\u2019s recent death. Holly\u2019s\u200b mother, you\u200c see, was a COVID denier and refused to get vaccinated. COVID killed her.<\/p>\n<p>King\u2019s message is implicit but clear: \u200cThose who \u2062questioned mask \u2062mandates or the hastily developed \u2062vaccines \u200bdeserve to die.<\/p>\n<p>In\u200d the novel, which is set mainly in 2021, King not only takes on COVID but racism, \u2062homophobia, the Jan. 6 Capitol incursion and Trump\u2019s \u201ceffect on the country\u2019s zeitgeist and political discourse,\u201d according \u2064to\u2063 NPR.\u00a0 \u201cKing has \u200cnever\u200c been shy about his \u2064politics, but \u200d\u2018Holly\u2019 is one \u2062of his most \u200dpolitical novels to date, and\u200d it\u2019ll surely \u2062anger all\u200b the right people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cright people\u201d are the people on \u2063the right. Yeah, we get it. King\u2019s theme is clear as a \u200dfreshly polished\u2063 mirror: Trump supporters who\u2062 had any \u2063reservations about school closures, mandatory\u2063 vaccines and other government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/odessa-texas-set-tell-covid-fascists-sit-shut-new-law-take-effect-immediately\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID<\/a> measures be \u200bdamned.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of people!<\/p>\n<h3>King&#8217;s Political\u2063 Bias<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/01\/books\/review\/stephen-king-holly.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>\u2018 reviewer Flynn Berry sums it\u200d up nicely:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom vaccinations to the Capitol riot,\u2062 \u2018Holly\u2019 charges\u2063 into\u200c the thorniest contemporary\u200d debates with gleeful \u200crecklessness.\u201d \u2063The \u2062writer might have added that King should no longer be considered as a novelist. He\u2019s now a full-blown\u2063 political activist for the progressive left.<\/p>\n<p>I guess King\u2019s already \u200bmade his fortune and doesn\u2019t care as much about how many books he \u200dsells\u2063 as he does which side of the political spectrum he appeals \u200bto. So\u200d much \u200cfor \u201cart for \u200bart\u2019s sake,\u201d where\u2064 art is independent\u2063 of any and all\u2063 political functions.<\/p>\n<p>One could\u2063 argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/stephen-king-gets-destroyed-dan-bongino-trying-leaving-fox-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King<\/a> \u200cis not an artist anyway, and\u2063 never has been. He\u2019s more of an entertainer, \u2063and\u200b he used to be \u2063good at it. Who\u200b can \u2063forget \u201cThe Shining,\u201d \u200d\u201cCarrie\u201d or \u201cCujo\u201d\u2013\u2063 all of which translated quite well \u2064into film? But that may be the problem with calling King an \u201cartist.\u201d The really great\u2063 novelists \u2014 like Dostoevsky, Faulkner or Flaubert\u200b \u2014 produce works that are almost always better \u200dthan the inevitable film renditions.<\/p>\n<p>Judging by reports, \u201cHolly\u201d is so \u200dladen with political bias from the\u200c outset that it\u2019s difficult to see how\u200c anyone could mistake it for\u2062 anything approaching good literature.<\/p>\n<h3>King&#8217;s Overt Political Activism<\/h3>\n<p>When the reader first encounters Holly, according \u2062to Rolling Stone, she\u2019s attending her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disgusting-hospital-system-announces-denying-potential-life-saving-care-unvaccinated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-denying<\/a> mother\u2019s funeral \u2063via Zoom. King\u2019s bias shines forth in the details.\u200d It\u2064 would have been one thing\u2063 for Holly to attend the funeral of her mother who died from \u200bCOVID,\u2063 but King chose to throw in \u2062the\u2063 COVID-denying context, which\u200b gives \u2062away his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chatgpt-displays-significant-systematic-liberal-bias-danger-influencing-election-results-say-researchers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">political bias<\/a> early on.<\/p>\n<p>Those suffering from\u200b TDS will swallow the bait like a large-mouth bass\u200c sucking down\u200c a worm \u2062and keep on reading. King takes a real\u2062 chance, however, with mentally healthy readers, or even those with milder cases \u200cof TDS. Let\u2019s face it, \u200da lot of Americans on both \u200bsides of the political divide \u2064don\u2019t feel like\u200c wasting \u2064their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stephen-king-taunts-conservatives-after-unhealthy-obsession-with-trump-spills-over-in-newest-book\/\" title=\"Stephen King mocks conservatives over Trump fixation in latest book.\">leisure time reading fictional accounts<\/a> of COVID that are politically\u2064 skewed.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t help that King\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-hating-stephen-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-Trump bias<\/a> is already well-known.\u200d Many will see \u201cHolly\u201d as King\u200b beating a dead pony. In one example among many,\u2062 King went \u200bon record in 2022 as saying, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/former-trump-aide-reacts-minutes-hunter-biden-sued-laptop-keep-underestimating-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump<\/a> was a horrible\u2064 president and is \u200ca horrible person,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/stephen-king-donald-trump-is-a-sociopath-202806679.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo Entertainment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think \u2064 [Trump] actually engaged in criminal \u2063behavior and,\u2062 certainly,\u200b I felt that he \u2063was a sociopath who tried to overturn the American democracy not \u200cout of any \u200dpolitical wish\u2064 of \u2063his own but because he could \u2064not \u200cadmit\u200d that he \u200bhad lost,\u201d King, then 74, told the U.K.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/stephen-king-interviewed-by-richard-osman-good-evil-and-donald-trump-rnppmpq95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>King is\u2063 entitled\u2063 to his opinion, of course, and he\u2019s welcome to do interviews to voice\u2063 them. When his\u2062 political obsessions about \u2062Trump start leaking into his \u2063novels, however, \u200bhe \u200dmay be \u2062embarking on the \u200broad to oblivion. His\u2063 body of work doesn\u2019t have \u200dthe staying power of Edgar Allan Poe or H.P.\u200c Lovecraft and the shift into overt political\u2062 activism will\u200d only weaken his reputation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolly\u201d\u200c sounds\u2062 more like a\u200b progressive rant than a novel, \u2063and that does not bode well for\u200b King or \u200dhis loyal followers.<\/p>\n<p>King\u2019s \u2063getting pretty old and it\u2019s \u2062showing. It\u2019d be nice\u2064 if he went out in style, but it isn\u2019t looking\u200c good. \u200bAt the rate he\u2019s going, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/stephen-king-pulls-fake-news-tweet-shame-initially-blames-source-owning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen King<\/a> is \u200cjust going to be another casualty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/longtime-dem-strategist-amazed-trump-movement-never-seen-anything-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump Derangement\u2062 Syndrome<\/a>.
