We don\u2019t want\u200c to defund the\u200c police.\u200c You can\u2019t defund the FBI.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Later in the interview, Mr. Grassley made\u2063 clear he thinks\u200c criticism \u2064of the FBI is warranted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to follow up and say that obviously, things aren\u2019t \u2063right with\u2064 the \u200dFBI, from \u200dmy point of \u200bview,\u201d Mr. Grassley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you don\u2019t defund the \u200cFBI to make that point, you reform the FBI.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">But Republican criticism of\u200c the FBI \u2062extends\u2062 far\u200d beyond Mr.\u200b Ramaswamy \u2063and goes \u2062back further than the launch of his\u200c presidential campaign.<\/div>\n<h2>FBI in GOP Crosshairs<\/h2>\n<p>The FBI has faced repeated allegations \u200dof having become\u200d politicized in a number of cases, including claims\u200d of targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/whistleblowers-allege-fbi-investigated-parents-opposed-to-school-covid-19-policies-4462127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parents protesting<\/a> at school board \u2062meetings, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/pro-life-activist-suspects-intimidation-tactic-after-fbi-agents-visit-her-parents-home-5275590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intimidation tactics<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americans-remember-the-48th-annual-march-for-life\/\" title=\"Americans remember the 48th annual March for Life\">pro-life activists<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/fbi-coordination-with-big-tech-censorship-ahead-of-2020-election-revealed-in-agent-deposition-missouri-ag-says-4903272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colluding with<\/a> social media companies to censor Americans&#8217; free speech ahead of the\u2062 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Allegations of FBI politicization got a boost\u2063 in May 2023 following\u200c the release of a 306-page report (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/storage\/durhamreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>) by special counsel\u200b John Durham on the \u2063origins of the FBI investigation of\u200b allegations that former \u2063President Donald Trump\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign colluded \u200cwith Russia.<\/div>\n<p>According to Mr. Durham, the FBI rushed to open the initial investigation\u200b based on unvetted intelligence, and FBI personnel showed \u200d&#8221;at best, a cavalier attitude towards accuracy and completeness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">In \u2063another\u2063 example that cast \u2063the FBI in a questionable light, one of\u2062 the Twitter Files installments \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/twitter-files-6-shows-deep-state-went-deeper-than-just-fbi-twitter-collusion-4930224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described Twitter<\/a> \u200cas\u200d having been turned into \u2062a &#8220;subsidiary&#8221; by the FBI, with email records detailing FBI pressure \u2062on the social \u2062media platform to censor posts.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe master-canine quality\u2062 of the FBI\u2019s relationship \u2062to Twitter comes through in this November 2022 \u2063email, in which &#8216;FBI San Francisco is notifying you&#8217; it wants action on four accounts,&#8221; investigative reporter Matt Taibbi wrote in a thread on X, in \u2063which he shared various internal Twitter records as part \u200dof Twitter Files 6.<\/p>\n<p>Among these, Mr. Taibbi shared a screenshot of \u200ban email\u200c from the FBI asking for &#8220;any \u200daction or inaction deemed appropriate within Twitter policy&#8221; with respect to accounts that &#8220;may potentially constitute\u2064 violations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Three of the four \u2063flagged accounts <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IngJoseAlvarez\/status\/1603865210883915777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were suspended,<\/a> with the one\u200c that was spared sometimes posting anti-Trump and blue-leaning content.<\/div>\n<p>Asked about the allegations that it was\u2062 putting the weight of its institutional heft \u2064on the\u200c political \u200dscales with such requests, the FBI told The Epoch Times \u2062via email that all it ever did \u200dwas notify private sector entities about &#8220;foreign \u2064malign influence&#8221; but\u2062 any \u2063action was taken independently by\u200d the companies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Other Twitter \u200bFiles\u200b disclosures shed light on Twitter&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/musk-confirms-political-candidates-were-shadow-banned-by-twitters-censors_4913736.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blacklisting of some<\/a> conservative accounts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/twitter-files-reveals-exact-moment-donald-trump-was-banned-last-year_4918969.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">internal deliberations<\/a> on banning former President Donald Trump&#8217;s account,\u200c and \u2063the FBI&#8217;s alleged \u2063role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/fbi-warned-twitter-of-hunter-biden-hack-and-leak-operation-before-2020-election_4904572.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suppression of<\/a> a New York Post story about Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">The release\u200b of Twitter Files 6, \u2062which showed that the FBI&#8217;s engagement \u2062with \u2063Twitter (now\u2063 X) \u2064appeared constant\u200d and pervasive, \u200bdrew\u2064 a flurry of critical takes from Republicans,\u2064 some of \u2063whom \u200dvowed to take action.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">&#8220;[The] \u200dFBI has a lot to answer for \u200bafter the latest drop of Twitter Files\u2064 6,&#8221; Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattgaetz\/status\/1603884157490315265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said\u200d in a tweet<\/a>. The GOP House\u2064 Judiciary Committee\u200b account on Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudiciaryGOP\/status\/1603878272676372480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked in a post<\/a>: &#8220;Does anyone still trust the FBI?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Texas state Rep. Troy Nehls,\u2064 a Republican and former sheriff, took to Twitter to say that the FBI\u200b would face a probe when the\u2062 GOP assumed control of \u200dthe House in several weeks.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">&#8220;Republicans \u200cwill investigate\u200b the FBI in \u2063January. I promise you\u200b that,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTroyNehls\/status\/1603864026789945344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he said<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">House Republicans would later go on to launch the \u2064Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal\u2063 Government under\u2062 the auspices\u2063 of the House \u2064Judiciary Committee and take the\u2062 FBI into their crosshairs.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Some of the\u2063 &#8220;weaponization&#8221; committee&#8217;s probes include <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/whistleblowers-the-fbi-has-labeled-dozens-of-investigations-into-parents-with\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whistleblower revelations<\/a> that\u2064 the FBI had labeled investigations\u2063 into parents with a threat\u2063 tag \u2063created by the agency&#8217;s Counterterrorism \u2062Division,\u200c or <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/judiciary-committee-uncovers-multiple-fbi-field-offices-coordinated-prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence that<\/a> multiple FBI offices coordinated \u2064to produce a memo targeting Catholics as potential domestic terrorists.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">In light of \u2064the various reports and revelations about\u2064 the FBI&#8217;s questionable actions, a growing number of Republicans\u2062 have leveled criticism against the law enforcement agency.<\/div>\n<p>Freedom Caucus\u200d chair Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) said at a recent press briefing:\u2062 \u201cWe do not want \u200cto fund them\u200c at their current level. We want to\u2063 send them a message \u2062that they obviously have too much money. \u200dThey\u2019re weaponized and\u200d using the taxpayers\u2019\u200b money against \u200dthe\u200b taxpayers. We are\u2064 done with\u200b that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">House\u2062 Judiciary\u200d Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/chairman-jordan-sends-funding-recommendations-protect-americans-fundamental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a letter<\/a> \u200bto House Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger (R-Texas) that\u200b he&#8217;s looking into using the appropriations process to pull\u2063 some funding from the\u2063 FBI.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">&#8220;We control the power \u2063of the purse, and we&#8217;re going to have to look at the\u200b appropriation process and limit \u2063funds going to some\u200b of \u200cthese \u2062agencies, particularly \u200bthe \u2063ones who are\u200d engaged in \u200dthe most egregious behavior,&#8221; Mr. Jordan elaborated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6323835580112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview<\/a> with Fox News&#8217; Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures in\u200b April after being asked what\u2062 his committee\u2064 can do in response to the alleged &#8220;weaponization of government.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>Calls to defund or disband\u2064 the FBI also got a boost\u2062 after agents raided former President Donald\u200d Trump&#8217;s Mar-a-Lago property and\u200b seized government records that the former president says\u200b he declassified.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">&#8220;The\u2063 FBI raid on Trump&#8217;s home tells us one \u200cthing. Failure is not an option,&#8221; Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepGosar\/status\/1556821907726630915?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post on X<\/a>. &#8220;We must destroy the\u200d FBI. We must save America.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Rep. Marjorie Taylor\u200c Greene \u200d(R-Ga.) was one of\u200b the\u200b first to express \u2064her disapproval \u2063of \u200dthe \u200cFBI\u2064 raid, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1556793230028587009?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posting\u200d on X<\/a>:\u200c &#8220;DEFUND THE FBI!&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> Nofollow&#8221;>intimidation tactics<\/a> against pro-life activists, and the mishandling of the investigation\u200d into \u2062former Secretary of State \u2062Hillary Clinton&#8217;s \u200cprivate email server.<\/p>\n<p>These controversies, among others, have \u200bfueled Republican criticism\u2063 of the agency and\u200b led to calls for reforms, funding cuts, and even\u2063 the dismantling of the FBI altogether.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">However, \u200cSen.
