He also had some other problems, and he had to take some medication that suppressed his immune system. Oliver said if those symptoms occur, a patient needs help fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeed is essential. These are the fastest-growing bacteria known to man,\u201d Oliver said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese infections, once they take hold, can spread extremely rapidly, like a fire,\u201d Keiser said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/shellfish-death-raw-oyster-galveston-county-vibrio-vulnificus\/13767828\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KTRK-TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keiser said Galveston County has five to 10 cases per year and a fatality \u201cevery few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12482833\/hurricane-idalia-vibrio-vulnificus-bacteria-warning-florida.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a> noted that the bacteria thrive in warm coastal waters and can contaminate shellfish.
