UAW President Shawn Fain said, plants that were not called upon to strike\u200d will work without \u2063a contract. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe UAW Stand Up\u2062 Strike begins at all three of the Big Three,\u201d the union said in a post on \u200cX, \u200cformerly known\u200b as Twitter.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAs time goes on, \u200cmore\u200d locals may be called on to \u2018Stand Up\u2019 and join the strike,\u201d the \u2063union told members. \u201cThis gives us maximum leverage and maximum flexibility in our fight to win\u2063 a fair \u2064contract at each of the \u200bBig Three automakers.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In \u2063total, almost 13,000 of the UAW\u2019s 145,000 members walked off their job site.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThese were chosen carefully by the UAW and \u200creflect a strategy\u2063 that will \u2064ensure a large \u2062number of suppliers and\u200c dealers \u2062are affected, while reducing the number of UAW workers that, at least\u2064 initially, are on strike and receiving strike\u2062 pay,\u201d said Patrick Anderson, CEO of Anderson Economic Group.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u2063 historic strike\u200b came after automakers did not agree to the union\u2019s\u2064 demands of increased wages, benefits, and \u2064job \u2062protections for its \u200cmembers after automakers reported almost\u200b record\u200b profits. The union was asking for benefits they claimed they lost \u2062over\u2063 a decade ago when \u2062the automaker companies were low on \u200bcash and on the \u2062verge of bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>The UAW president said the\u200c union is seeking over a \u206340% pay increase for rank-and-file members over four years. <\/p>\n<p>However,\u200b the\u2063 automakers offered the union double-digit pay increases but it \u2063was not enough to meet their demands. <\/p>\n<p>Currently, full-time assembly plant workers\u200b at Ford and \u2063GM earn \u200b$32.32 an hour, while part-time employees make close to $17 an hour. At Stellantis, \u200bfull-time employees earn\u200b $31.77\u200b an hour, and part-time workers earn close \u2063to $16 an hour. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the UAW is asking\u200c for all temporary workers to be made permanent, cost-of-living\u200c adjustments, increases in pension benefits \u200cfor \u2064current retirees and restoring pensions for new hires. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Fain has said \u2062the demands are \u200dthe \u201cmost audacious and ambitious list\u2064 of proposals they\u2019ve seen in decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to experts, the \u200dstrike could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Anderson Economic Group, they are estimating that a 10-day work stoppage could\u2062 cost almost $5.6 \u200cbillion. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cEven a short strike would impact economies throughout \u200dMichigan\u200c and across the nation,\u201d said\u2064 Patrick Anderson, CEO of the Anderson Economic Group.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay informed!
