This inquiry \u2062was prompted by CNN&#8217;s coverage of the internal \u2063investigation in June, which brought the issue to light.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations \u200csent a letter to Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda \u2064Fagan on Sept. 12, requesting all records related to the agency&#8217;s investigation into the allegations. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Ranking Member \u2064Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) expressed concern that the investigation, known as Operation Fouled Anchor, concluded in January 2020\u200b without being disclosed to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This\u200b delay in disclosure raises serious questions about why \u200binformation\u2064 about the conduct of\u2064 U.S. Coast Guard personnel and the\u2064 safety of cadets was\u2062 withheld for so long,&#8221; the senators wrote in their letter.<\/p>\n<p>The senators emphasized the \u2063need to hold \u200baccountable the\u200c leaders who oversaw or contributed to the environment in which misconduct occurred without taking action.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It \u200dis unclear whether those responsible have continued their careers in the Coast Guard, received higher\u200d positions of authority, \u200dor\u200c left service without facing consequences,&#8221; the\u2062 letter stated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The public deserves to know \u200cwhy so \u200bmany reported\u200c cases of sexual assault and harassment were allowed to go uninvestigated for so many years,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u200c a \u200dmemorandum summarizing the investigation in January 2020, the academy was aware of allegations against 30 \u200bof the 43 individuals implicated at the\u2062 time of the assaults. \u2064However, only five cases were reported to USCG\u2064 investigative services and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/recently-arrested-jan-6-defendant-dies\/\" title=\"Jan. 6 Defendant Dies After Recent Arrest\">local \u200dlaw enforcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The senators have requested that the Coast Guard provide all service record entries associated with subjects investigated as part of Operation Fouled Anchor, including reports, \u2063updates, memoranda, and other materials,\u2064 by Oct. 30.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<p>Additionally, they \u200chave \u200crequested all records related to any sexual assault investigations at the Coast Guard Academy from 2006 to the present, regardless of their connection \u2062to Operation Fouled\u200d Anchor.<\/p>\n<h2>US Coast Guard Issues \u200dApology<\/h2>\n<p>In July, \u2062the Coast Guard issued an \u2064apology for its failure to take appropriate action in handling cases of sexual assault and \u200bharassment at the academy in Connecticut. The military branch also admitted \u200cthat \u2064it \u200cdid not widely\u200d disclose its six-year internal investigation into numerous cases from 1988 to 2006.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Coast Guard takes responsibility\u200c for this failure and extends its apologies \u200cto each \u200cof the \u200dvictims and their loved ones,&#8221; stated a Coast Guard spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast \u200dGuard stated that it has taken action to hold accountable \u200bknown perpetrators who were within the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS), but \u200bdid not provide\u2063 specific numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the\u2063 Coast Guard claimed that it has reached out to all known \u200dvictims, offering individual, in-person meetings to\u200b provide information on \u200btheir specific cases and access\u2064 to support\u200d services.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Committee on Commerce, \u200bScience and Transportation,\u200d which\u2063 oversees the Coast Guard, \u2062expressed surprise at not being informed of the \u200cinvestigation\u200d until a recent informal briefing with Senate staff.<\/p>\n<p>The committee has demanded\u2062 documents and records \u2064related to the investigation, which identified\u2062 62 substantiated incidents of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment involving the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and its \u200ccadets in\u200b New London, \u200bConnecticut.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Senate is seeking answers regarding \u2063the employment status and \u200dsecurity clearances of individuals with substantiated claims against them who may be currently working\u200b for the \u200dDepartment of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\n<em>The \u2063Associated Press \u2064contributed to this report.<\/em>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h2> What actions has the Coast Guard \u200ctaken to address the mishandling of sexual\u200b assault reports at the \u2062Academy?<\/h2>\n<p><span>  \u2064 Nally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-launches-inquiry-into-coast-guard-over-alleged-coverup-of-sexual-assaults\/\" title=\"Senate investigates Coast Guard for alleged sexual assault coverup.\">subcommittee requested\u2063 detailed \u2063information<\/a> on any actions taken by the\u2064 Coast Guard \u200cto\u200b address the mishandling of\u2062 sexual assault reports, \u200cas well \u2064as any disciplinary\u200c actions or administrative measures taken against \u2062individuals involved in the\u200b misconduct. This raises serious concerns about the failure to properly address and investigate these cases.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has requested that the Coast Guard provide all relevant records and materials related to Operation Fouled\u200d Anchor by \u200cOct. 30. \u200cThey \u2063are\u2064 also seeking information on\u200d the actions taken to address the mishandling of sexual assault\u200c reports and any disciplinary measures imposed on those\u200b responsible.<\/p>\n<p>This inquiry by the U.S. Senate is a crucial step towards holding the Coast Guard\u200d Academy accountable \u200dfor\u200d its mishandling of sexual assault\u200d reports. It is imperative that justice is served and that measures are put in place to prevent such negligence from\u2064 happening \u2063again in the future.
