It involves finding some sad, stressed mother whose \u200bchild \u2063escaped the abortionist\u2019s pincers,\u2063 and getting her to tell\u200c the \u2062internet \u200bshe wishes that inconvenient, needy, PlayDoh-chucking\u200b toddler didn\u2019t exist \u2014 or at\u200d least \u200bthat her \u200blife would be a whole lot easier\u200d without it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a clear ploy on \u200dthe media\u2019s part to convince readers: <em>See, \u200bthis\u2064 \u2014 these things, these messy children \u2014 is what happens when you don\u2019t let women\u200b get abortions!<\/em> None of \u2064the\u200b parties\u2063 involved seem to care that those sticky-fingered toddlers will someday be teenagers with internet access, able to see every \u2062word their parents griped about them.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Guardian&#8217;s Controversial Column<\/h3>\n<p>On Monday, The Guardian\u2063 ran a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2023\/sep\/11\/motherhood-parenting-body-autonomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">column<\/a> by a woman named Amanda Montei, who compared the sacrifices of motherhood to\u2026 a\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cali-school-official-calls-racist-vandalism-prank-that-went-sideways-after-black-student-confesses\/\" title=\"Cali School Official Calls Racist Vandalism \u2018Prank That Went Sideways\u2019 After Black Student Confesses\">high school incident<\/a>\u2062 when a boy on whom she had \u200ca crush took advantage of an opportunity to sleep with her in a\u200c plot \u2063\u201cconcocted by \u2063his \u200bfriends\u201d and then \u201cnever spoke to [her] again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Complaining about her toddler daughter\u2019s dependence and using grossly sexual language\u200c to describe the child\u2019s very natural physical needs and \u2062curiosities toward her mother, Montei issued her conclusion: \u201cI came \u2063to see that the \u2063basic tenets of rape\u2064 culture run through our cultural expectations \u200bof American mothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montei doesn\u2019t explicitly use the word \u201cabortion\u201d\u2062 in the\u2063 passage, but she \u2062preaches the foundational message on which abortion activism depends: that it\u2019s not fair\u2062 to mothers for\u200c their children to make demands on them,\u2063 especially inconvenient ones. In her last sentence, she mourns \u201cwhat I hadn\u2019t known before consenting\u201d to \u200cbecoming a mother. \u200dWhat she would have done if \u200bshe \u2064had \u201cknown,\u201d the reader is left to \u200bwonder.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>The Washington Post&#8217;s Heartbreaking Feature<\/h3>\n<p>A month earlier, The Washington Post dropped a nearly 6,000-word <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/interactive\/2023\/texas-abortion-law-teen-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feature<\/a> about \u2064Brooke\u2063 and Billy High and their\u200b twin toddlers, coldly titled \u201cAn abortion ban made them teen parents. This is life two years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her carefree\u200c life before it was interrupted by the girls\u2019 existence, Brooke was \u201cgearing up for\u200c real estate\u200b school, enjoying long days at the beach with \u2064her \u2062new boyfriend,\u201d the \u2064Post explained. \u2063When she got pregnant, Billy \u201cwanted her to get an abortion\u201d at first, he admitted to the Post. But since \u201cshe could\u200c no longer get an abortion \u200cin \u200bTexas,\u201d\u200b Brooke had no\u200b choice but to keep her daughters, who\u2064 were born \u201csix months later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062girls \u2063deserve better than \u200bto have the whole world read that their mother wondered to a reporter, \u201cIf I would have had the abortion\u2026\u201d\u200d They deserve\u2063 better\u2063 than to feel guilt about \u2063their own existence, told by some\u2062 reporter in \u200dWashington\u2062 that if they weren\u2019t alive, their\u200c father could be \u201cSkating every day. Partying at night. No worries.\u201d\u200b They don\u2019t deserve to have their parents\u2019 discussions of divorce publicly displayed \u200bin\u2064 a\u200c national newspaper. But the editors at the Post don\u2019t \u200bcare, because the moments when the twins\u2019 parents find them \u2064inconvenient are \u2064helpful to the outlet\u2019s favored narrative. (To Brooke and Billy\u2019s\u200c credit, they\u2019re trying to make things \u200cwork, with \u2063no help from \u200cThe Washington Post.)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are plenty of other\u2064 examples, and many of the headlines follow a similar pattern.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>Stories of Regret and \u200cGuilt<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cShe Wasn\u2019t Ready \u2064for Children. A Judge Wouldn\u2019t\u200b Let Her\u200c Have an Abortion,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/29\/magazine\/teen-pregnancy-abortion-judge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reads<\/a> \u200cone from The New York Times Magazine. The author writes about a woman named Giselle, a mom \u2064of\u200b twins, who tried to \u2064obtain an abortion as a minor without parental consent in \u2064Texas. \u200bThe story records her pro-con\u2063 list for the decision:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cCons: Killing something growing inside of\u2064 me. Guilt. Constant guilt from\u200b others. Pros: Continue life without being pushed\u200b back. Freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once the court denied Giselle\u2019s attempt\u200b and she had the \u200dbabies, her frustrations with raising \u2063them are described in words that are\u2064 haunting to read as\u200c a stranger, let alone as the unwanted children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes, she was haunted by \u200cimages of smothering them \u200bwith a\u200d pillow \u200dor\u200d chucking them\u200c across the room,\u201d the article states. It ends with Giselle \u200dundecided about whether \u2062to keep custody of her children or let a friend\u2019s parents raise them.<\/p>\n<p>Media outlets \u2063exploit these families\u2019 stories to\u200d advance an agenda that suggests\u200b a child\u2019s \u2063value is linked to how much his\u2063 parents want him, or\u2062 whether his existence provides enough happiness to outweigh the sacrifices his life requires. They\u200b are hoping, even\u2063 goading the struggling parents to communicate,\u2062 as troubled actress Lena Dunham <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4608364\/lena-dunham-wish-abortion-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">put bluntly<\/a>:\u2062 \u201cI \u200cstill haven\u2019t had an abortion, but I wish I had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some women cut out the middleman and write the articles themselves. In 2021, Merritt\u200b Tierce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/02\/magazine\/abortion-parent-mother-child.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrestled<\/a> in The New York Times Magazine about \u201cThe Abortion \u2064I Didn\u2019t Have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t abort the pregnancy I \u2064didn\u2019t\u200d plan, \u2062but I did have to abort the\u200b life I imagined\u200d for myself,\u201d wrote Tierce, who \u200dhas since \u2063become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/five-unorthodox-pro-life-bills-advancing-in-state-legislatures\/\" title=\"Five Unorthodox Pro-Life Bills Advancing In State Legislatures\">pro-abortion activist<\/a>. She admits that she\u2019s afraid of the effect on her\u2062 son of \u201cthis idea that working for access to abortion is so important to me because it\u2019s exactly what I didn\u2019t \u2063have when I got pregnant\u200b with him.\u201d But \u2062that fear doesn\u2019t stop \u2062her from publicly\u200b recounting in great detail just how \u200dmuch his\u200d existence threw off her \u200clife.<\/p>\n<p>She also \u2063admits \u200cto\u200b later having two abortions after the births of her son and \u200chis younger \u2063sister, and \u2062says she \u2064doesn\u2019t \u2064regret them. \u201cI have\u2063 strong \u2063and loving relationships with both of my children now in\u200b large part \u200cbecause I didn\u2019t have those \u2063other children,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine hearing from your mother: <em>My relationship with\u200d you\u2063 is better because I killed your\u200d siblings<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>It \u2063causes nothing \u2063but pain to children\u200b for parents to air their dirty diapers \u2014 er, laundry \u2014 to a national media audience. Sometimes it\u2019s women running \u2063to news outlets, \u200dbegging to air their familial grievances for clout or sympathy. \u2064Equally as often, agenda-driven publications \u200dfind a struggling family and\u200d bake their challenges into a pre-ordained \u200bnarrative with no regard for the family\u2019s privacy\u200c or dignity. Still, shouldn\u2019t\u200c some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/enough-with-our-horrible-media-boosting-women-who-publicly-regret-their-childrens-existence\/\" title=\"Stop glorifying women who openly regret having children.\">core \u2062maternal warning light<\/a> go off\u200c when a New York Times\u200b reporter\u2062 knocks on your door \u2063and asks to \u200cshop your motherhood woes out to their readers?<\/p>\n<p>I hope the children griped about in these stories never feel unwanted, never \u200bread these cold stories in \u2064which\u2063 they \u200dare unwilling pawns.\u200d I hope as they\u2064 grow\u200b up, their kitchen tables and bedsides host loving conversations \u200bwith parents who use the stories of hardship to teach\u200d lessons about the value\u200b of sacrifice and\u200c unconditional love.<\/p>\n<p>Lots \u2064of parents who found\u200b themselves with an unwanted pregnancy have stories of gratitude for the \u201cinconvenience\u201d that became their greatest blessing. Those <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/13\/a-pregnancy-care-center-helped-me-become-a-mom-and-a-follower-of-jesus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stories<\/a>, lovingly\u200d told, convey to\u200b a\u2064 child \u2064his preciousness and worth.
