They have \u2064introduced two \u200bnew policies that focus on preventing bias and discrimination \u200cin\u200b AI usage. In addition, \u200bthey have appointed their first chief AI officer, Eric Hysen, who is also the DHS Chief Information Officer and co-chair of the DHS Artificial\u2063 Intelligence Task Force.<\/p>\n<p>Hysen emphasized the importance \u2062of ensuring\u200b that AI \u200cusage within the department is free from discrimination and fully compliant with the law. He \u2062stated that \u200cthese policies will help retain the public&#8217;s trust in the\u2063 department&#8217;s \u200duse \u200cof AI.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2062two new policies, titled &#8220;Acquisition and Use of\u200b Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning by DHS Components&#8221; and &#8220;Use of \u2063Face Recognition and Face\u2063 Capture \u200bTechnologies,&#8221; highlight the need \u200dto avoid inappropriate consideration of various factors such as race, ethnicity,\u200c gender, religion, and more. \u2064The \u2064policies also address the issue \u200cof \u2064unintended bias or disparate impact.<\/p>\n<p>The first policy,\u2062 which was issued last month, focuses on AI use in general, including machine \u200clearning. DHS aims to minimize bias\u2064 and discriminatory effects in AI usage and\u200c has\u200b pledged not to \u2064use AI technology for improper\u200d monitoring \u200cor surveillance \u2063purposes.<\/p>\n<p>The second policy, issued on \u20639\/11, specifically \u200daddresses face recognition and face capture technologies.
