Tommy Tuberville&#8217;s (R-Ala.) response was a\u2062 straightforward shake of the head &#8220;no&#8221; when reporters \u200dasked whether he was willing to negotiate over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amid-growing-pressure-tuberville-sticks-to-abortion-policy-protests\/\" title=\"Tuberville remains firm on abortion policy protests despite mounting pressure.\">military promotions standoff amid \u200bgrowing pushback<\/a> from his Republican colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u200d we\u2019ve going \u2064down for seven months,\u201d he said Tuesday. \u201cThey\u2019re not into it either. Jackson decision that overturned Roe\u200b v.\u200b Wade, states where 450,000 service members live have enacted abortion laws, according to a\u2064 DOD press release.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of Defense\u2064 Lloyd \u2064Austin signed a\u2063 memo \u2064allowing for funding of paid \u200dleave and \u200ctravel \u200dreimbursement for abortions for service members and\u2063 their families in October 2022,<\/p>\n<div class=\"shortcode post-related-videos\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"lazyload-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">The Biden administration Justice Department followed with a \u200dlegal opinion (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/d9\/2022-11\/2022-10-03-dod-abortion-transportation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>) advising the DOD that it was within its rights to do\u200b so, because the funding covered travel, and \u2064not the abortion procedure itself.<\/div>\n<p>Mr. Tuberville maintains \u200bthat Mr. Austin had no authority\u2062 to allow for such funding via a memo. He is demanding the DOD reverse its \u2064policy, \u2064and then follow procedure \u2063and send up legislation for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Move it back to\u200c what it was &#8230;\u200d and then send \u200bover what you want to vote on and let\u2019s vote it up or down, whichever way it\u200c goes. If\u200c they move it back and we get a vote, that \u2064constitutes no \u200dholds,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then\u200d let the vote go as it may.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">The hold affects \u200dsome 300 military \u200bservice members. Promotions can still occur \u200dvia the non-batched, normal but slower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/navy-chief-retires-leaves-third-military-branch-without-confirmed-leader-amid-tuberville-abortion-hold-5465117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">process<\/a>, but the branch leader appointments require Senate confirmation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"my-5\">The Senate Armed\u2062 Services Committee has\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/4201007-tuberville-military-promotions-despite-growing-gop-pressure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> \u2062273 promotions, with about 40 to go, according to \u2063The Hill. \u200dSome senators have said that individually voting on the promotions doesn&#8217;t make sense.<\/div>\n<h2>Pushback<\/h2>\n<p>Mr. Tuberville&#8217;s hold has drawn the ire \u200cof military members and\u2062 politicians on\u2062 both the left \u200cand right.<\/p>\n<p>Senate \u2064Republican Leader Mitch\u200d McConnell (R-Ky.) told \u200dreporters\u2064 on Tuesday\u200c that his colleague was making a &#8220;mistake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think holding these\u2064 non-policymaking career military [officials] who can\u2019t be \u200dinvolved in politics at all \u200bis a mistake, and we continue to work on \u2063that and\u2063 I hope at some \u200bpoint we can get it \u200cclear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Michael\u200d McCaul (R-Texas) \u200dtook \u200cto CNN over the weekend to blast Mr. Tuberville&#8217;s hold.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">\u201cThis\u200c is paralyzing the Department of Defense\u2014the idea that one man in the Senate can hold this \u2062up for months,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/rep-mccaul-sen-tuberville-paralyzing-military-with-abortion-policy-standoff-5489624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Mr. McCaul, chair of\u2064 the House\u2063 Foreign Affairs Committee, calling it a\u2062 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/guest-op-ed-by-representative-gus-bilirakis-r-fl-12\/\" title=\"Guest Op-Ed by Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12)\">national security problem<\/a>.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>Mr. McCaul added that he supported efforts to pass legislation that would repeal the DOD&#8217;s \u200dabortion policy. Though it\u2064 would garner support in the Republican-controlled\u200d House, it would likely fail in the Democrat-controlled\u200c Senate.<\/p>\n<p>On CNN, a \u2062staffer for Mr. Tuberville pointed to Senate Majority Leader Chuck \u200bSchumer (D-N.Y.) as a responsible party as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one \u200ccan stop Chuck Schumer from holding votes \u200bon \u2062these nominations. He just doesn\u2019t \u200bwant to,\u201d\u200c said spokesperson Steve Stafford.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Schumer dismissed that\u2064 line of reasoning on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, the bottom line is this is a Republican problem. Don\u2019t \u2064pawn it off on us.\u2062 It was created by\u200b Tuberville solely himself, \u200cand\u2062 it\u2019s up to the Republicans to put\u200b pressure on\u200d him to back off,\u2064 plain \u2063and simple. We\u2019re\u2063 already seeing that pressure mount,\u201d Mr. Schumer\u2064 said. \u201cThe pressure is mounting. Tuberville should back off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He further told The Hill that calls for the DOD\u2062 to\u2063 make some concessions were &#8220;absurd.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several members of Congress have called on the DOD and Mr. Tuberville to compromise, including Sen. \u200dKyrsten Sinema ( I-Ariz.).<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-5\">Currently, the U<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
