Michelle Lujan Grisham claimed guns to be a \u201cpublic health emergency\u201d last month in issuing a blanket\u200b 30-day\u2062 prohibition against carrying firearms in and around Albuquerque. \u200cMs. Lujan Grisham argued that the ban was needed to offer a &#8220;cooling-off \u200cperiod&#8221; in which authorities could address <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/new-mexico-governor-defends-emergency-gun-control-order-as-pushback-grows-5490332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent gun deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time for standard measures has passed,\u201d the governor said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2023\/09\/08\/governor-announces-statewide-enforcement-plan-for-gun-violence-fentanyl-reduction-plan-includes-30-day-suspension-of-concealed-open-carry-in-albuquerque-and-bernalillo-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sept. 8 \u2064statement<\/a>. \u201cAnd\u200c when New Mexicans are afraid to \u200cbe in crowds, to\u200c take their \u2063kids to school, to leave a baseball game\u2014when their very \u2062right to exist is threatened by the prospect of violence at\u200c every turn\u2014something is very wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The order came in response to the shootings of three children, including the July 28 shooting death \u200cof a 13-year-old girl in northern New\u200b Mexico. Police\u200d later arrested a \u200bman and his 14-year-old son for \u2064the\u2063 crime.<\/p>\n<p>Walt Bracken, who owns the gun shop BMC Tactical in Albuquerque, told \u2063The Epoch Times that he has \u2064also noticed an\u200d uptick in sales at \u2063his business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are upset,\u201d said Mr. Bracken. \u201cThere is an attitude that\u200c our governor\u200d isn\u2019t respecting our rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A clerk at the Albuquerque gun shop Right to Bear Arms, who asked\u200c to remain anonymous out of fear \u2064of retribution, said\u2064 that \u200bMs. Lujan Grisham and overreach by \u2063other Democratic leaders have inadvertently been an effective marketing tool for the firearms industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen a definite jump\u2063 in traffic because people \u2062are nervous, and rightfully so,\u200d when they think their right to purchase a\u200b gun won\u2019t be around in\u2063 the near future,\u201d the clerk told The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is definitely a joke in the gun community that the policies of the \u200cleft\u2062 are the\u2062 greatest salesman of all time,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The governor&#8217;s suspension of the open and concealed\u200b carrying of firearms by the public was \u200calmost immediately met\u200c by legal action. Within days, the National Association for \u2064Gun Rights filed a\u2064 lawsuit in conjunction with \u200done of its members who lives \u2063in the city, asking the court to block the ban,\u200b arguing that the governor&#8217;s action violated\u2063 the Second Amendment of \u200bthe U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Carry Prohibition infringes the\u2063 rights of the people, including Plaintiffs, to keep and bear arms as protected by the Second Amendment.
