Even 2000 years ago, when the apostle John was huddled\u200b in a \u2064cave in the prison colony of Patmos scribbling down the book of Revelation, the metaphor for political corruption wasn\u2019t exactly subtle: \u201cBabylon the Great, the\u2062 mother of\u2064 harlots.\u201d With the recent \u2064revelation that\u2064 a Virginia Democrat running for a statehouse seat has filmed sex acts online for money, \u2062you might be forgiven for seeing the total fusion of the world\u2019s two oldest professions as \u2064a sign\u200b of the end times. I myself am not one for <em>Left Behind<\/em>-style mumbo \u200cjumbo, but \u200blet me tell you, the fact that Democrats are <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenLouiseLucas\/status\/1701339502977909062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fundraising off of this<\/a> and the \u2063media are\u200d out there defending this woman is not a harbinger of anything good.<\/p>\n<h2>Virginia Democrat \u2062Running for Statehouse Seat\u200d Engages in Online Sex \u2063Acts for Money<\/h2>\n<p>To recap, control of the Virginia legislature is hotly contested \u2013 and one of the Democratic candidates\u2063 in one of the most competitive races, Susanna \u2062Gibson,\u2063 is a\u2064 nurse\u2063 practitioner and mother of two. Oh, and it turns out she\u2019s also someone who performs sex acts with her husband online, in front of an audience, for money. A Republican operative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2023\/09\/11\/susanna-gibson-sex-website-virginia-candidate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tipped off the \u2064Washington Post about this<\/a>, \u2064who confirmed\u2062 that Gibson \u201cstreamed sex acts\u200b on Chaturbate, a platform that says it takes its name from \u201cthe \u200bact of masturbating while chatting online.\u201d Well, there\u2019s a portmanteau for the ages, but Gibson\u2019s unseemly oeuvre can be seen on various places all over the internet because it turns out \u200d\u201cChaturbate videos are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/reports-president-trump-is-traveling-to-gettysburg-to-meet-with-gop-lawmakers\/\" title=\"Reports: President Trump Is Traveling to Gettysburg to Meet with GOP Lawmakers\">streamed live<\/a> on that site and \u2064are often archived on\u2062 other publicly available \u200dsites.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-583054515\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-82753e987ebbd7368a90e2734debc3fd fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-82753e987ebbd7368a90e2734debc3fd\"><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, I\u2019m already pretty cynical about the double standards involving Democratic politicians. Recall that Virginia\u2019s \u200bprevious governor, licensed pediatrician Ralph Northam, did a horrifying radio interview where he endorsed killing live babies in the name of abortion rights or something. He was subsequently exposed as either wearing blackface or \u200cKKK regalia (we\u2019re not sure which\u2062 one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/22\/us\/ralph-northam-blackface-photo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he was in the photo<\/a> because no one wanted to know the answer). The Washington Post eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/how-ralph-northam-came-back-from-the-political-dead\/2019\/12\/27\/941e4a46-282b-11ea-b2ca-2e72667c1741_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote an editorial praising him<\/a> for \u2063his growth in office because he mouthed some platitudes about \u201cequity\u201d\u200d in response to the scandal.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean \u2063that the defenses of Gibson that have sprung up aren\u2019t still enraging to read. \u2064The New York Times headline beggars belief: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/11\/us\/politics\/susanna-gibson-virginia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State House Candidate in\u2062 Virginia Condemns\u200d Leak\u200b of Sex Tapes<\/a>: Susanna Gibson, a Democrat running in one of seven tossup House seats in the \u200cclosely divided legislature, denounced the \u2018illegal invasion of my \u2062privacy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To start, the headline is either factually inaccurate \u200dor deliberately designed to confuse. The videos of her were\u2063 easily available on the \u200dinternet, so \u200cthere \u2063was\u200b no \u201cleak\u201d \u2062of anything to the press, as is implied\u2064 by \u2063the headline. In that respect, it\u2019s the Times doing a more nuanced version of\u200b the dishonest \u201cRepublicans pounce\u201d motif.<\/p>\n<p>To the extent that the videos of her livestream were recorded without her approval\u200d and uploaded elsewhere, who\u2019s fault is that? She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pornhub-founders-16-million-mansion-razed-in-massive-fire-arson-suspected\/\" title=\"Pornhub Founder\u2019s  Million Mansion Razed In Massive Fire, Arson Suspected\">performing sex acts<\/a>\u200c on the internet and didn\u2019t think it \u200cmight be an \u200dissue when she ran for office? \u201cIt\u2019s illegal and it\u2019s disgusting to disseminate this kind of material, and\u2064 we\u2019re working\u2064 closely \u200dwith the F.B.I. and \u2064local prosecutors\u2063 to bring\u2064 the wrongdoers to justice,\u201d Gibson\u2019s lawyer \u2062told the \u200cTimes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4d1fe0d8ede0af1c05c819e2606d4e08 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4d1fe0d8ede0af1c05c819e2606d4e08\"><\/div>\n<p>Did \u200cI mention Gibson had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/09\/12\/candidate-livestreamed-sex-acts-00115395\">5,700 \u201cfollowers\u201d<\/a> on this Chaturbate site? Look, \u200bif you \u200care streaming sex acts for money on the internet for thousands\u200c of people and you are shocked \u2013 <em>shocked! \u00ad<\/em>\u2013 that those videos were recorded and disseminated, you\u2019re\u200d either lying or too \u2063stupid to hold political office. But forget her lawyer, Ms. Gibson\u2019s faux outrage is far more offensive. \u201cMy political opponents and their Republican allies have proven\u200d they\u2019re willing to commit a sex crime to attack me and my family,\u201d she said in a statement quoted\u200b by the Times. That the Times\u200b lets a woman who\u2019s\u2063 solely responsible for her own \u2063public humiliation accuse others of \u201csex crimes\u201d for pointing out that she\u2019s all over the\u200d internet having sex for money without any pushback \u2013 well, it says volumes about the Times\u2019 own\u2062 meretricious behavior.<\/p>\n<p>But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kurt-schlichter-be-caring-for-the-libs-feelings-when-the-red-wave-hits\/\" title=\"Kurt Schlichter: Be Caring for the Libs\u2019 Feelings When the Red Wave Hits\">real coup de gr\u00e2ce<\/a> here is Gibson\u2019s characterization of this thing that she did to herself as an attack on \u201cmy family.\u201d\u2062 If it\u2019s so horrifying for her kids to see mom having sex on the internet, why would \u2064you\u200d risk it in the first\u200d place? Even if Gibson didn\u2019t run for office, \u200bthe odds of her kids finding\u2064 out about this are far from nonexistent. I won\u2019t begin to suggest that \u200dshe\u2019s not otherwise\u2062 a good mother \u2013 I sincerely\u2062 hope she is \u2013 but \u2064don\u2019t dare \u200ddodge \u200baccountability by hiding behind your kids. \u200bGood luck selling voters on the notion that if \u200dthis \u200brevenge porn tiger mom is\u2064 elected, it won\u2019t be the Virginia \u200dWhorehouse of Delegates, \u2064it will be the Virginia Whore<em>home\u2062 <\/em>of Delegates.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, I\u2019m not surprised, but the expectation of abhorrent behavior doesn\u2019t make it any less depressing. The \u2063idea that\u200c we\u2019re in a \u201cculture war\u201d inherently implies that there\u2019s a\u2062 disagreement in values, and, at this point, the disagreement can be boiled down to the fact that one side doesn\u2019t think we should \u2064have any.<\/p>\n<p>If you think I\u2019m \u2062exaggerating, Politico\u2019s media\u2063 columnist \u200cJack Shafer\u2063 is\u2062 asking, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/09\/12\/candidate-livestreamed-sex-acts-00115395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">So What if a Candidate Livestreamed Sex Acts with Her \u200bHusband?<\/a>\u201d Much of the column is devoted \u200bto the precedent\u2063 set by past politicians\u2019 behavior \u2013 I confess I had forgotten Rep. Barney Frank\u2019s boyfriend literally ran a prostitution service out of his D.C. apartment, and being reminded Frank suffered no real consequences for this does not make me more sympathetic to Gibson \u200b\u2013 followed by a lot of \u201cto be sure\u201d throat clearing. But then we get to the crux of it:<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3686b7d438e5ade7a1f2dea43d6913f2 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3686b7d438e5ade7a1f2dea43d6913f2\"><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>On one\u200c level \u2014 and \u2063spare me the reflexive scolding \u2014 what\u2019s so appalling about what Gibson streamed? For one thing, as\u2063 the Post notes, there\u2019s nothing illegal about\u200d Gibson\u2019s online adventure. It\u2019s not even extramarital!\u200d Granted, her performances proved that she and her husband are exhibitionists of the highest order, but we accommodate exhibitionists all the time without clucking our tongues. According to the Daily Mail, not an always reliable source, one\u200c clip \u200dhas Gibson\u2064 offering her paying audience\u200b the chance to see her have a \u2063non-missionary sex \u200cposition \u200cwith her husband or witness a \u201cgolden shower.\u201d Billions of \u2062such consensual videos like this reside on the internet, and plenty of \u200dcouples engage in such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/thank-god-for-andrew-cuomo-a-timeline-of-cnns-adoring-coverage-of-andrew-cuomo\/\" title=\"\u2018Thank God for Andrew Cuomo\u2019: A Timeline Of CNN\u2019s Adoring Coverage Of Andrew Cuomo\">acts daily<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What\u2019s so appalling about getting naked and peeing on your spouse for cash in front of \u200ban audience of a few thousand\u2063 people? \u2063Is that a real\u2063 question we\u2019re asking here? Wasn\u2019t a video of a politician getting micturated on by prostitutes considered \u201ckompromat\u201d for foreign adversaries just a few years ago? And does anyone really think that broad toleration of this kind of perversity doesn\u2019t mean encouraging \u200cvery illusory ideas about \u201cconsensual\u201d sex acts that result in women being exploited and abused?<\/p>\n<p>Some of us very much want to stop accommodating corrupt exhibitionists,\u2062 and a big reason why we can\u2019t is that \u200cevery time we \u2063try and enforce some basic decency, some bourgeois\u2062 commentator pops\u2062 out of the \u200cwoodwork to insist very real concerns shared by tens of millions of Americans are \u201creflexive scolding.\u201d Well, if this is scolding, \u2064sit\u200c down and pin your ears back, Jack, because there\u2019s a lot more where that came from.<\/p>\n<p>Of \u200dcourse, mounting\u200d this defense\u2064 would \u200cbe easier if\u2064 the consensus surrounding basic notions of morality wasn\u2019t crumbling from all\u200d sides. So just go ahead and insert all the \u201cwhat about Trump?\u201d ritual maledictions here. But did it occur to Democrats that one reason why none \u200bof the \u200bmorality arguments they lobbed against Trump seemed to have any effect? To start, by the time Trump ran for president, almost two decades had passed since\u200b the\u2064 entire\u2062 Washington establishment decided they were nonplussed \u2063by Bill Clinton\u2019s behavior. Time magazine\u2019s White House\u2063 reporter even waived off Bill Clinton\u2019s sex \u200cscandals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/politics\/special\/clinton\/stories\/medianotes070698.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and declared<\/a>, \u2062\u201cI\u2019d be happy to give him [oral sex] just \u2062to \u2064thank him for keeping abortion \u200dlegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you resent\u200c \u2013 and I hardly\u200b think I\u2019m alone here \u2064\u2013 the fact that your choices at the ballot box are between one corrupt\u2063 amoral\u200c exhibitionist and another corrupt\u2062 amoral exhibitionist with slightly more enticing policy preferences, maybe\u2064 it\u2019s worth attempting to \u2063reclaim some semblance of agreement surrounding traditional morality.
