Kathy Hochul is \u200dlooking into \u2063an &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; option to provide the new arrivals with documents that would\u2063 allow them to legally work in the state.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>On Tuesday\u200b afternoon, shortly\u200b before a\u2064 discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/calif-proposes-536m-wildfire-prevention-plan\/\" title=\"Calif. proposes 6M wildfire prevention plan\">state legislative leaders<\/a> on the illegal\u2064 immigrant crisis, Ms. \u2063Hochul told reporters in her Manhattan office that \u200cshe intended to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2023\/luis-r-sepulveda\/historic-introduction-new-york-emergency-expedited\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new bill<\/a> that\u2064 would \u200ddramatically shorten the waiting period between filing \u2064an asylum claim \u2063and getting a work permit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposal, introduced on Tuesday by Assemblymember Catalina \u2064Cruz and\u200b state Sen. An already backlogged work authorization system further\u200c prolongs the wait.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Hochul also \u2063said that her office is working on drafting language for a similar work permit pathway that lawmakers\u2064 could\u200d either debate in a special session \u200bor when they return to Albany in \u2063January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My attorneys\u2063 are working \u200con [the language] \u2063 as we \u200cspeak,&#8221; Ms. Hochul said at the\u2063 press briefing. &#8220;I spoke \u2062about this \u200cat the White\u200d House. \u200bI said, &#8216;I may do something at the \u2062state level. I may\u200d be having to do this.&#8217; So, we&#8217;re working on language right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No state \u2063has ever tried to work\u2064 around the federal government to issue its \u2063own work permits for foreign nationals,\u2064 and\u200c it is not\u200d clear whether New York&#8217;s attempt would survive the \u200clegal challenge that&#8217;s almost certain to come. Ms. Hochul said she acknowledged that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This would be unprecedented,&#8221; she \u200ctold the reporters. &#8220;And I believe the federal government would believe we have to have their authority to\u2062 move forward with state work permits. \u200dBut\u2063 as I said, \u2063we have to let them work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Biden \u2063administration appeared not to be so\u200b supportive of such an effort.<\/p>\n<p>In a conference call with New York-based media\u200d outlets on Tuesday, two\u2064 unnamed Biden officials \u200cdidn&#8217;t say if they\u200b would ask the Empire State to call off\u200b its \u200dattempt \u2062to take matters into its own \u2064hands, but made it clear that work permission is\u2064 a &#8220;federal authority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The \u2063provision of\u200b employment authorization is very clearly \u200ca federal authority,&#8221; they said.\u2063 &#8220;And so,\u2064 it is not something that we would encourage states to pursue.\u2064 If someone was seriously on that, we&#8217;ll \u200dtake it as\u2062 it \u2064comes. But our position has\u2063 been \u200dthat \u2064it is\u2062 a clear federal authority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times has reached out to the U.S.\u2062 Department of Homeland Security for further comment.<\/p>\n<p>The governor&#8217;s comments \u200bcame \u2064after New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rep-cawthorn-blasts-big-tech-for-censorship-and-political-bias\/\" title=\"Rep. Cawthorn blasts Big Tech for censorship and political bias\">illegal immigrant crisis<\/a> \u2063would\u2064 &#8220;destroy&#8221; the \u2063city after his demand for \u200dthe\u200d federal\u200b government expedite work authorizations for\u2062 those currently\u2062 in the city&#8217;s \u2063care.<\/p>\n<p>Since April 2022, more \u2063than\u2064 110,000 migrants have come to\u2064 New York City\u200c after illegally \u200dcrossing \u2064the \u2063U.S.-Mexico\u2063 border. About\u200d 60,000 of them are housed in traditional city-run\u200d shelters and newly opened emergency sites. About\u200d 20,000 children entered the \u200bcity&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sf-school-board-president-accuses-mayor-of-division-for-criticizing-renaming-re-opening-plans\/\" title=\"SF School Board President Accuses Mayor Of \u2018Division\u2019 For Criticizing Renaming, Re-Opening Plans\">public school system<\/a> this fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have to \u200bbe honest with New Yorkers with what we&#8217;re about to experience\u2014a financial tsunami that I \u2063don&#8217;t think this city has ever experienced,&#8221;\u2064 Mr. Adams\u200b said in an interview with PIX11\u200d over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not utopia,&#8221; he added.\u2064 &#8220;New York City cannot manage 10,000 people a month with no end in\u200d sight.
